  • $\beta$-Glucosidase enzyme reaction under high hydrostatic pressure was investigated in terms of physical chemistry. A model substrate (p-nitrophenyl-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside(pNPG)) was used, and the pressure effects on the enzymatic hydrolysis (pNPG${\rightarrow}$pNP) at 25 MPa, 50 MPa, 75 MPa, and 100 MPa were analyzed. Two parts of the reaction such as kinetic and equilibrium stages were considered for mathematical modelling, and their physicochemical parameters such as forward and inverse reaction constants, equilibrium constant, volume change by pressure, etc. were mathematically modeled. The product concentration increased with pressure, and the two stages of reaction were observed. Prediction models were derived to numerically compute the product concentrations according to reaction time over kinetic to equilibrium stages under high pressure condition. Conclusively, the $\beta$-Glucosidase enzyme reaction could be activated by pressurization within 100 MPa, and the developed models were very successful in their prediction.

  • In this paper, a theoretical analysis is carried out to study the effect of viscosity variation with pressure in multiply grooved moving hydraulic spool valves. Analytical expressions for pressure distribution in the clearance and leakage flowrate are obtained solving one-dimensional Reynolds. For constant viscosity, an analytical expression for lateral force is also presented. The results showed that variation of viscosity with pressure affect highly on pressure distribution, leakage flowrate and lateral forces in hydraulic spool valves. Therefore additional intensive studies, including numerical analysis for two-dimensional Reynolds, should be required to investigate detailed lubrication characteristics of spool valves for high pressure.

  • Environmental protection on the ocean has been interested and nowadays the International maritime organization(IMO) has advanced on the prevention of air pollution from ships. This study presents the emission characteristics of 4 stroke propulsion diesel engine in E2 cycle (constant speed) and E3 cycle (propeller curved speed). Also the effects of important operating parameters in terms of intake air pressure and temperature, and maximum combustion pressure are described on the specific emissions. Emissions measurement and calculation are processed according to IMO technical code. The results show that NOx emission level in E3 cycle is higher than E2 cycle due to lower engine speed and lower maximum combustion pressure by retarding fuel injection timing. Intake air temperature has strong influence on NOx emission production. And CO, HC emissions are not affected by maximum combustion pressure and intake air pressure and temperature.

  • The purpose of this numerical study was to investigate performance characteristics for cooling tower axial fans with sweep. Performance data for the fans with various sweep angles were obtained in terms of the setting angle at a constant flow rate. Viscous flow calculations were carried out to obtain Performance data of the total pressure rise and hydraulic efficiency. A solution of the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equations was used to calculate the sound pressure level at three times fan diameter away from the fan. The calculated performance data well represented performance characteristics of the cooling tower axial fan. The total pressure rise and hydraulic efficiency at the same setting angle decreased with sweep angle. Sound pressure level slightly decreased for the fan with a sweep angle of 10 degree. No significant effect of the sweep geometry was found on the sound pressure level.

  • This paper presents a high performance pressure control scheme for SR(Switched Reluctance) type hydraulic oil pump using DITC(Direct Instantaneous Torque Control). SR drive has a good feature for pump applications due to a high efficiency, high speed and high torque characteristics. But, SR drive has high torque ripple in commutation region. So, the pump pressure variation is high in the region. In order to reduce the pressure variation, DITC combined with pressure control scheme is presented in this paper. A simple PI controller with flow and pressure limit, generates a reference torque to keep the constant actual pump pressure. The direct torque controller of SR drive generates inverter switching signals according to a control rule and a torque estimator. Computer simulation and experiemtal results show the validation of the proposed control scheme.

  • The effects of change in injection pressure on spray structure in high temperature and pressure field have been investigated. The analysis of liquid and vapor phases of injected fuel is important for emissions control of diesel engines. Therefore, this work examines the evaporating spray structure using a constant volume vessel. The injection pressure is selected as the experimental parameter, is changed from 22 MPa to 112 MPa using a high pressure injection system (ECD-U2). Also, we conducted simulation study by modified KIVA-II code. The results of simulation study are compared with experimental results. The images of liquid and vapor phase for free spray were simultaneously taken by exciplex fluorescence method. As experimental results, the vapor concentration of injected fuel is leaner due to the increase of atomization in the case of the high injection pressure than in that of the low injection pressure. The calculated results obtained by modified KIVA-II code show good agreements with experimental results.

  • In this paper, an influence of inlet pressure on the running characteristics of tilting pad thrust bearing is studied by a numerical analysis. The inlet pressure is obtained from the extended Bernoulli equation including the loss coefficient which is varied with the operating conditions. The running characteristic parameters such as the minimum film thickness, the film pressure and the film thickness ratios are calculated for various runner speeds with constant load in particular two pivot positions. The results are shown that the inlet pressure has a large influence on the minimum film thickness and other running characteristic parameters.

  • The effects of journal speed and bearing load on pressure distribution and the temperature distribution of bearing surface are investigated experimentally. The journal bearing which has 219.94mm diameter, length-to-diameter ratio of L/D=0.8 and clearance ratio of 0.004 is used. Journal has a built-in pressure transducer for the measurement of pressure distribution in the mid plane of bearing. Bearing surface temperatures are measured at 60 points. The bearing load is varied from 300 N to 5900 N and journal speed from 300 rpm to 2500 rpm. As the load is increased under constant speed, the location of maximum pressure moves to the site of minimum film thickness, and maximum pressure and absolute value of minimum pressure are increased. The temperature distribution in vicinity of oil inlet shows that heated lubricant's carry-over exists around the oil inlet.

  • The numerical analysis of the negative pressure porous gas bearings is presented. The pressure distribution is calculated using the finite difference method. The Reynolds equation and Darcy's equation are solved simultaneously. The air bearing stiffness and damping are evaluated using the perturbation method. Rectangular uniform grid is employed to model the bearing. The vacuum preloading is considered. The pressure in the vacuum pocket is assumed to be a constant negative pressure. The total load, stiffness, damping and flow rate are calculated fur several geometrical configurations and several values of negative pressure. It is found that too large vacuum pocket can result in negative total force.

  • Steam generator (SG) tubes in a nuclear power plant can undergo rapid changes in pressure and temperature during an accident; thus, an accurate model to predict short-term creep damage is essential. The theta (𝜃) projection method has been widely used for modeling creep-strain behavior under constant stress. However, many creep test data are obtained under constant load, so creep rupture behavior under a constant load cannot be accurately simulated due to the different stress conditions. This paper proposes a novel methodology to obtain the creep curve under constant stress using a modified 𝜃 projection method that considers the increase in true stress during creep deformation in a constant-load creep test. The methodology is validated using finite element analysis, and the limitations of the methodology are also discussed. The paper also proposes a creep-strain model for alloy 690 as an SG material and a novel creep hardening rule we call the damage-fraction hardening rule. The creep hardening rule is applied to evaluate the creep rupture behavior of SG tubes. The results of this study show its great potential to evaluate the rupture behavior of an SG tube governed by creep deformation.
