  • As construction cases on soft ground are increasing, the necessity of ground improvement is also increasing. Granular pile is one of the methods for soft clay and for loose sandy soil. In our country, SCP(Sand Compaction Pile) method using sand material has been mainly used to improve soft ground, but Granular pile with crushed-stone was not used much. However, alternative material such that crushed-stone is needed to substitute for sand due to the environmental and economical problems. In this study, staged load test and consolidation test were performed in the laboratory to observe the behavior of soft ground improved by Granular pile. In order to evaluate the characteristics such as bearing capacity, drainage, and settlement, sand and crushed-stone were applied as each pile material. The test results show that crushed-stone has higher bearing capacity and less settlement than those of sand under similar pore water pressure condition. Therefore, crushed-stone is determined to be appropriate as substitute for sand.

  • Sand compaction pile(SCP) is one of the ground improvement techniques which is being used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of loose sands or soft clay grounds. In this study, laboratory model test and large-scale direct shear test were performed to investigate the effects of area replacement ratio of composite ground in order to find out the optimum value of area replacement ratio for the ground improvement purpose. Area replacement ratios of 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% were chosen respectively in the model tests to study the effects of area replacement ratio on variations of stress concentration ratio, settlement and shear strength characteristics of composite ground. In large-scale direct she4ar tests, area replacement ratios of 20%, 30%, 46% were applied to study their effects on shear strength characteristics of composite ground.

  • This paper deals with the numerical analysis by the (mite element method introducing Biot's theory of consolidation and the modified Cambridge model proposed by Roscoe school of Cambridge University as constitutive equation and using Christian-Boehner's technique. Especially, time interval and division of elements are investigated in vies of stability and economics. In order to check the validity of author's program, the program was tested with one-dimensional consolidation case followed by Terzaghi's exact solution and with the results of the Magnan's analysis for existing banking carried out for study at Cubzac-les-ports in France. The main conclusions obtained are summarized as follows: 1. In the case of one-dimensional consolidation, the more divided the elements are near the surface of the foundation, the higher the accuracy of the numerical analysis is. 2. For the time interval, it is stable to divide 20 times per 1-lg cycle. 3. At the element which has long drain distance, the Mandel-fryer effect appears due to time lag. 4. Lateral displacement at an initial loading stage predicted by author's program, in which the load was assumed as not concentrative. but rather in grid form, is well consistent with the value of observation. 5. The pore water pressure predicted by author's program has a better accordance with the value of observation compared with Magnan's results. 6. Optimum construction control by Matsuo-Kawamura's method is possible with the predicted lateral displacement and settlement by the program.

  • The necessity of effective and economical improvement for soft ground is required more and more as mountains form 70% of country. The soft ground improvement methods for ocean development are sand compaction pile method, displacement method are applied to the soft ground improvement from ocean development pre-loading method, air pressure method, well point method, pack drain method, quicklime pile method etc. Among them, the sand compaction pile method, has many problems such as the economical problem on importing materials due to the lack of sand and destroying the nature while collecting sand. To replace the sand with other alternative materials, a study on the bottom ash compaction pile method because the bottom ash has the similar engineering properties with sand. Therefore, in this study, after compose the complex soil with a replacement rate of 10~80% and a large direct shear test, shear test, consolidation test with replacement rates of bottom ash are performed to estimate whether its shear and consolidation characteristics are suitable for the alternative material of compaction pile method. As a result of test, Shear Strength Parameters tend to be increased in accordance with the increase of replacement ratio of bottom compaction pile, and Settlement Reduction Factor and $t_{90}$ tend to be decreased.

  • This study are carried out to an lab model tests to develop a construction method that solidifies high-water content cohesive soil by using filter type drain and vacuum pressure, and that stabilizes the ground by accelerating horizontal drain at incline or in tunnel. The calibration chamber was designed within length of 1.5m and height of 50cm, and a drainage hole for preconsolidation, a switchgear and a piezometer were installed at the bottom part of the chamber. Also, a settlement gage was installed at the top part so that it can measure the settlement by time. The calibration ground basis was made in a form of thin layer from kaolinite and bentonite in 9:1 ratio stirred at 130% water content condition. A filter type drain was installed at chamber center and a vacuum pressure of 0.8MPa was applied through a hose linked to the cap at the top part, then, the settlement was measured in every 1 hour interval. After experiment, the moisture contents were measured by position, then, verified the increase of solidity of the ground through a triaxial compression test on undisturbed profile. After 11 days from the effective date, it was observed that the settlement decreased by maximum 35mm and the water content ratio was reduced by 38% at most while the solidity of the ground increased by 5~8 times greater than before preconsolidation.

  • Soft ground stabilization is needed to construct large civil facilities on the soft clay ground. Pre-loading method, which is accelerating consolidation method, is generally used to stabilize the soft ground. However, pre-loading method is required long construction period and quantities of fill material. Therefore, electro-osmosis method is used to replace pre-loading method for stabilizing the soft ground. Electro-osmosis method is disadvantageous in constructive and economic aspects because it is needed a metallic electrode. So, in order to solve the those disadvantages, plastic electrode was developed to replace metallic electrode. Plastic electrode, which is made by using nano-technology on existing Plastic Drain Board (PDB), was used to supply the electric power. In this study, therefore, the model test was conducted to confirm the effect of improvement and electrical characteristics of soft ground by spacing of plastic electrode. The result shows that the effect of improvement of soft ground was decreased up to 45% by increasing electrode spacing and electrical characteristics on the soft ground were influenced by consolidation settlement with electrode spacing.

  • Recently, the demand for industrial and residential lands are being increased with economic growth, however, it is difficult to acquire the land for development with good ground condition. For efficient and balanced development of land, new development projects are being carried out not only the areas with inland but those with the soft ground as well. As soft grounds have complex engineering properties and high variations such as ground settlement especially when their strength is low and depth is deep, it needs to accurately analyze the engineering properties of soft grounds and find general measurement for stabilization and economic design and management. Prefabricated vertical drain technology is widely used to accelerate the consolidation of soft clay deposits and dredged soil under the preloading and various types of vertical drain are being used with the discharge capacity. Under field conditions, the discharge capacity is changed with various reason, such as soil condition, confinement pressure, long-term clogging and folding of vertical drains, and so on. Therefore, many researcher and engineer recommend the use of required discharge capacity. In this paper, the experimental study were carried out for two different types of vertical drains by utilizing the large-scale model tests and waste lime.

  • Suction Drain Method is a relatively new technique to improve soft ground using vacuum pressure which can be directly applied to the soft ground through drains that the pore water pressure around them are decreased without changing total stress. This can accelerate volume changes and increase strength of the ground. This paper shows the results of field test of the suction drain method applied at dredged and reclaimed clay. To evaluate the improvement effects of soft ground by the suction drain method, this paper analyzed real-time field measurements to the results of the laboratory tests and numerical analysis. The comparisons of the settlement and shear strength between suction drain method and surcharge preloading method show possibilities for replacement of the preloading methods. The settlements by suction drain method were 2.3 times larger and undrained shear strength were 300%~400% higher than surcharge method. Moreover, the water content is decreased about 30% and the preconsolidation pressure is increased about $0.52kgf/cm^2$.

  • This paper aims at investigating the characteristics of soil deformation by finite element method (FEM) coupling the cap model with the multi.purpose program developed by authors for the analysis of foundation displacement. The cap model as the constitutive equation has proved to be very useful to a partially saturated roils as well as rocks with high accuracy. As described in the Previous Paper (Park et al 1987) , there exist some difficulties in the determination of soil parameters in order to use the cap model at Present. However the authors have been studying to seek the method for the determination of the soil parameters from the laboratory results of conventional cylindrical triaxial test. Though the computer program advocated by foreign scholars has been kept secret, authors accomplished in performing the FEM analysis by the algorithm and program developed by authors for the cap model. Good results are obtained compared with those published already by Desai(1981) The main conclusions analyzed are as follows: 1. The cap model can be coupled with the multi.purpose computer program of authors bases on the Biot's consolidation theory without loss of generality. 2. Big difference appears in the settlement of center of the embankment between the cap modes and the modified Cam clay model in undrained conditions. The more study on which is more accurate should be performed in this respect.
