  • Sand Compaction Pile and Stone Column method have been used in widely during several decades as a technique to reinforce soft soils and increasing ultimate bearing capacity, accelerate consolidation settlement of the foundation ground. Stone column method, making a compaction pile using crushed stone, is a soft ground improvement method. However, stone column method is difficult to apply to the ground which is not mobilized enough lateral confine pressure because no bulging failure resistance. Hence, in present study, development the geogrid reinforced stone column system for settlement reduction and wide range of application of stone columns. To develop this system, triaxial compression tests were conducted for evaluation which is about behavior characteristics of stone column on replacement rate and confine pressure. Then, 3-dimensional numerical analysis were evaluated for application of the GRSC (geogrid reinforced stone column) system as evaluate behavior characteristics and settlement reduction effect of stone column reinforced by geogrid on types and reinforcing depth change of geogrid.

  • Cone and T-bar penetrometers have been frequently used to estimate the undrained shear strength of clay. For small-size model tests, miniature penetrometers should be used but their correlation factors have not been well published. In this study, a testing setup was developed to derive empirical factors of the miniature cone and T-bar penetrometers. A 350mm-diameter chamber and kaolin clay were utilized to prepare soil specimens consolidated under four different pre-consolidation pressures controlling undrained shear strength. Two miniature cones with two diameters of 10-mm and 16-mm and a T-bar penetrometer with 10-mm diameter were used to investigate boundary effect, penetration rate effect, and diameter and shape effect. Unconsolidated-undrained triaxial tests were carried out with samples taken from the specimens to measure undrained shear strength. Finally, empirical factors for the penetrometers were constructed to correlate tip resistance to undrained shear strength.

  • This paper dealt with FEM analysis of foundation improved with pack drain. The theory on pack drain was scrutinized and observed values in the field were compared with numerical results. Work site of Kwangyang container pier was selected as a ease study in which measurement of settlement and pore water pressure was accurately carried out. Biot's consolidation equation was selected as governing One, coupled with modified Camclay model as constitutive one. Christian and Boehmer's numerical technique was adopted. Behavior of foundation with pack drain is not simple but very complicated. Discontinuity resulted from rigidity difference between adjacent materials, smear effect and complicated boundary conditions should be considered in the behavior analysis of foundation behavior. The results of numerical analysis were influenced by smear zone. In relevant to this effect, finite element analysis was carried out using the reduced horizontal coefficient of permeability in the smear zone; The numerical results were compared with observed values in surface settlement. including pore water pressure. However only lateral di5plaoement by numerical ana1Ysis was shown since its measurement was not performed in the field. The predication of settlement to be developed later can be effectively employed for the obtimization of construction. The predication of residual settlement using the data measured in the field was made by Hoshino, Asaoka and hyperbolic method. Among them, the hyperbolic method proved best one. Settlements accorded well between numsrical and observed values while pore pressure showed a slight difference. Lateral displacement showed largest values at constant distance from ground surface. The validation of foundation analysis improved with pack drain by computer program employed in this study selecting modified Cam-clay model was satisfactorily secured.

  • For geotechnical design in practice, soils are, in general, assumed to behave as a linear elastic or perfect plastic material. More realistic geotechnical design, however, should take into account various factors that affect soil behavior in the field, such as non-linearity of stress-strain response, stress history, and water content. In this study, a series of laboratory tests including triaxial and resonant column tests were peformed with sands of various silt contents, relative densities, stress states, OCR and water contents. This aims at investigating effects of various factors that affect strength and stiffness of sands. From the results in this study, it is found that the effect of OCR is significant for the intermediate stress-strain range from the initial to failure, while it may be ignored for the initial stiffness and peak strength. For the effect of water content, it is observed that the initial elastic modulus decreases with increasing water content at lower confining stress and relative density At higher confining stresses, the effect of water content Is found to become small.

  • This research empirically analyzed the effect of information sharing through the use of public libraries on the construction and consolidation of social capital of individuals. Through the survey targeting public library users, it was identified that the frequency of public library use and the participation of public library programs have positive effect on the recognition of information sharing and the reliability of information shared. In addition, information sharing among people became more active when public libraries mediate their information activities. This public library-mediated information sharing positively affects the construction of structural and relational social capital. In contrast, it does not have significant meaning on the construction of cognitive social capital, which means that information sharing and the use of public library relatively concentrate on satisfying personal information needs.

  • In this study, bottom-up powder processing and top-down severe plastic deformation processing approaches were combined in order to achieve both full density and grain refinement with least grain growth. The numerical modeling of the powder process requires the appropriate constitutive model for densification of the powder materials. The present research investigates the effect of representative powder yield function of the Shima-Oyane model and the critical relative density model. It was found that the critical relative density model is better than the Shima-Oyane model for powder densification behavior, especially for initial stage.

  • The influence of stress path on the deformation characteristics of clay has been studied through a series of stress-path controlled triaxial tests on artificially sedimented and normally con- solidated Kaolinite. It has been found that there exists a critical stress increment ratio, Kc, in which stress·strain characteristics possesses a linear relationships and beyond Kc, strain hardening. A modified hyperbolic constitutive model for the strain hardening behavior has been formulated based on the Drnevich's hyperbolic function. And, a method of settlement analyses has been Proposed wherein the effect of stress path during consolidation is taken into account.

  • This paper conducts a complicated coupled effective stress analysis of X-section-in-place concrete (XCC) pile installation and consolidation processes using the dual-stage Eulerian-Lagrangian (DSEL) technique incorporating the modified Cam-clay model. The numerical model is verified by centrifuge data and field test results. The main objective of this study is to investigate the shape effect of XCC pile cross-section on radial total stress, excess pore pressure and time-dependent strength. The discrepancies of the penetration mechanism and set-up effects on pile shaft resistance between the XCC pile and circular pile are discussed. Particular attention is placed on the time-dependent strength around the XCC pile shaft. The results show that soil strength improved more significantly close to the flat side compared with the concave side. Additionally, the computed ultimate shaft resistance of XCC pile incorporating set-up effects is 1.45 times that of the circular pile. The present findings are likely helpful in facilitating the incorporation of set-up effects into XCC pile design practices.

  • Individual vacuum pressure method is soft ground improvement technique, in which a vacuum pressure can be directly applied to the vertical drain board to promote consolidation and strengthening the soft ground. This method does not require a surcharge load, different to embankment or pre-loading method. In this study, given the inner displacement of the ground where the individual vacuum pressure is applied, this dissertation aimed to reproduce the state of stress in the ground that is subject to the constraints created by the depth of improvement area. Modified Cam Clay theory which made it possible to take into account the isotropic displacement of the ground was applied to the NAP-IVP used simulation; the conception of equivalent permeability proposed by Hird was also applied so that the 3-dimensional real construction effect of drain materials could be reflected in the analysis.

  • A sintering aid, $B_{2}O_{3}$ have been included into a $LiAlO_{2}$ electrolyte support by a tape casting method in order to reinforce mechanical strength of the support for molten carbonate fuel cells [MCFCs). Starting idea originates from the low melting point of $B_{2}O_{3}$ ($450^{\circ}C$), which can provide the low temperature consolidation of ceramic materials. The mechanical properties and the microstructure changes of the $B_{2}O_{3}$-included electrolyte support were examined by scanning electron microscope, mercury porosimetry, X-ray powder diffraction [XRD], high temperature differential scanning calorimeter and three-point bending strength measurement. The mechanical strength was clearly improved by addition of $B_{2}O_{3}$. The increase of mechanical strength results from the neck growth of a new $LiAlO_{2}$ phase between $LiAlO_{2}$ particles by the liquid phase sintering. Average pore size and porosity of the electrolyte support reinforced by addition of the sintering aid, $B_{2}O_{3}$, was $0.24{\mu}m$ and 59%, respectively which were suitable microstructure of a matrix for an application of MCFCs.
