  • Candidate coating materials for re-usable metallic nuclear fuel crucibles, TaC, TiC, ZrC, $ZrO_2$, and $Y_2O_3$, were plasmasprayed onto a niobium substrate. The microstructure of the plasma-sprayed coatings and thermal cycling behavior were characterized, and U-Zr melt interaction studies were carried out. The TaC and $Y_2O_3$ coating layers had a uniform thickness, and high density with only a few small closed pores showing good consolidation, while the ZrC, TiC, and $ZrO_2$ coatings were not well consolidated with a considerable amount of porosity. Thermal cycling tests showed that the adhesion of the TiC, ZrC, and $ZrO_2$ coating layers with niobium was relatively weak compared to the TaC and $Y_2O_3$ coatings. The TaC and $Y_2O_3$ coatings had better cycling characteristics with no interconnected cracks. In the interaction studies, ZrC and $ZrO_2$ coated rods showed significant degradations after exposure to U-10 wt.% Zr melt at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 15 min., but TaC, TiC, and $Y_2O_3$ coatings showed good compatibility with U-Zr melt.

  • Groundwater drawdown was pointed out as one of the causes of induced settlement on high speed railways, especially concrete track. In this study, the effect of groundwater variation on settlement was evaluated through a comparison of field measurements with numerical analysis results. A trial and error method, i.e., repeated numerical analyses by changing material properties, was used to calibrate the model. The model was applied to investigate the effect of groundwater drawdown, thickness of soft layer, and embankment height on residual settlement after concrete track completion. A soft layer thicker than 4m would result in more than 30mm of settlement; a detailed analysis of groundwater behavior thus should be conducted from the design stage to construction.

  • Fine recycled-concrete aggregates(RCAs) instead of natural sand were tested for a foundation material under sewage conduit system, which was evaluated based on foundation settlement at various conditions. To obtain this applicability of RCAs, the settlement behavior was simulated with FLAC program based on the difference of material properties, and immediate settlement behaviors and the change of material properties under the simulated drainage conditions also tested at the various loading conditions in the laboratory. Finally, large-scale settlement test in the field was conducted to prove the above feasibilities. Subsequently, the amount of settlement from the FLAC simulation was calculated under $5.0{\times}10^{-6}\;m$ and the extent of settlement and property changes (porosity, permeability and waster absorption) was not noticeable from the laboratory experiments. Also, settlement monitoring from the field experiment showed the consistent results with laboratory experiments except for the consolidation settlement(=5 mm) of the round below the foundation. In summary, adopting fine RCAs as a foundation material for sewage conduit system was resonable based of geotechnical point of view.

  • This study presents a modeling approach for geogrid-encased stone column(GESC) method which is widely used in Europe as an alternative to conventional pile foundations. Several benefits of using the stone column method include sound performance, low cost, expediency of construction, and liquefaction resistance, among others. Recently, geosynthetic-encased stone column approach has been developed to improve load carrying capacity through increasing confinement effect. The aim of this research is to establish a systematic approach for modeling of GESC and to form a database for the fundamentals of GESC. This paper presents details of 3D modeling of GESC together with the general behavior of GESC.

  • This study shows what the political distrust of three nations was preserved among US, Japan, and South Korea in 2008. According to the World Value Survey research, the political distrust of three nations was reached over 70% when on the basis of national people's consciousness in 2008. Especially in the case of South Korea, the percentage of extreme distrust was the highest compared to the other countries. The reason why South Korea could not manage the nation people's political voice to the government and National Assembly. So consequently political complaining behavior channel should be erected more in the political mechanism. And Korean political parties could not manage the social development and national consolidation. Moreover, attacted the negative effects to society. Political distrust is the worst obstacle in democracy that it will be needed the national consensus to amend it.

  • The stress~strain characteristics of geosynthetics reinforced clayey soil were investigated by triaxial compression tests. All the tests were peformed either on unreinforced or reinforced soils under fully drained condition after having been consolidated isotropically or anisotropically to the required level of effective stresses by the small increment of 0.05kgf/$cm^2$. The anisotropically consolidated drained tests were performed to simulate the in-situ condition of reinforced soil structures such as reinforced soil wall, abutment and embankment which are generally in the anisotrpic state. From a series of tests it was ffund that the behavior of the anisotropically consolidated reinforced clayey soils was very different from stress~strain characteristics of consolidated reinferced clayey soils. It was found especially that the initial Young's moduli of anisotropically consolidated reinforced clayey soils were higher than those of isotropically consolidated reinforced clayey soils. It was found also that the reinforcement effect in anisotropically consolidated reinforced soils developed at a much lower level of axial strain(0.01%) compared with isotropically consolidated ones(about 1.0~5.0%).

  • As construction cases of structure are increasing in the soft ground, the necessity of ground improvement is also increasing. Granular pile is one of the improvement methods for soft ground and for loose sandy soil. In domestic, SCP(Sand Compaction Pile) method using sand material has been mainly used to improve soft ground, but Granular pile with crushed-stone was not used much. However, alternative material such as crushed-stone is needed to substitute for sand due to the environmental and economical problems. In this study, staged load test and consolidation test were performed in the laboratory to observe the behavior of soft ground improved by Granular pile. In order to evaluate the characteristics such as bearing capacity, drainage, md settlement, sand and crushed-stone were applied as each pile material. The test results show that crushed-stone has higher bearing capacity and less settlement than those of sand under similar fore water pressure condition. Therefore, crushed-stone is determined to be appropriate as the substitute for sand.

  • The void ratio and elastic moduli are design parameters used in geotechnical engineering to understand soil behavior. Elastic and electromagnetic waves have been used to evaluate the various soil characteristics due to high resolution. The objective of this study is to evaluate the void ratio and elastic moduli based on elastic wave velocities and electrical resistivity. The Field Velocity Resistivity Probe (FVRP) is developed to obtain the elastic and electromagnetic wave profiles of soil during penetration. The Piezoelectric Disk Elements (PDE) and Bender Elements (BE) are used as transducers for measuring the elastic wave velocities such as compressional and shear wave velocities. The Electrical Resistivity Probe (ERP) is also installed for capturing the electrical resistivity profile. The application test is carried out on the southern coast of the Korean peninsula. The field tests are performed at a depth of 6~20 m, at 10 cm intervals for measuring elastic wave velocities and at 0.5cm intervals for measuring electrical resistivity. The elastic moduli such as constraint and shear moduli are calculated by using measured elastic wave velocities. The void ratios are also evaluated based on the elastic wave velocities and the electrical resistivity. Furthermore, the converted void ratios by using FVRP are compared with the volumetric void ratio obtained by a standard consolidation test. The comparison shows that the void ratios based on the FVPR match the volume based void ratio well. This study suggests that the FVRP may be a useful device to effectively determine the elastic moduli and void ratio in the field.

  • The laboratory tests are performed on how the liquefaction potential of the sea dike structures on the saturated sand or silty sand seabed could be affected due to earthquake before and after construction results are given as follows ; 1. Earthquake damages to sea dike structures consist of lateral deformation, settlement, minor abnormality of the structures and differential settlement of embankments, etc. It is known that severe disasters due to this type of damages are not much documented. Because of its high relative cost of the preventive measures against this type of damages, the designing engineer has much freedom for the play of judgement and ingenuity in the selection of the construction methods, that is, by comparing the cost of the preventive design cost at a design stage to reconstruction cost after minor failure. 2. The factors controlling the liquefaction potential of the hydraulic fill structure are magnitude of earthquake(max. surface velocity), N-value(relative density), gradation, consistency(plastic limit), classification of soil(G & vs), ground water level, compaction method, volumetric shear stress and strain, effective confining stress, and primary consolidation. 3. The probability of liquefaction can be evaluated by the simple method based on SPT and CPT test results or the precise method based on laboratory test results. For sandy or silty sand seabed of the concerned area of this study, it is said that evaluation of liquefaction potential can be done by the one-dimensional analysis using some geotechnical parameters of soil such as Ip, Υt' gradation, N-value, OCR and classification of soils. 4. Based on above mentioned analysis, safety factor of liquefaction potential on the sea bed at the given site is Fs =0.84 when M = 5.23 or amax= 0.12g. With sea dike structures H = 42.5m and 35.5m on the same site Fs= 3.M~2.08 and Fs = 1.74~1.31 are obtained, respectively. local liquefaction can be expected at the toe of the sea dike constructed with hydraulic fill because of lack of constrained effective stress of the area.

  • Although the discharge capacity of the natural fiber drains are very low compared to that of plastic drain board (PDB), it is found that the conventional fiber drains and the new developed straw drain boards have great potential for use as a substitute for conventional plastic drain boards through several model tests. To verify their field application, a pilot test using environmentally friendly drains is also being carried out to prove their effective discharge capacity in the field. The pilot test site was divided into 5 different areas, with various combinations of vertical and horizontal drains installed for evaluation. Definite characteristics of various drains are still to be found due to the delay in construction of embankment. Consolidation behavior of three types of vertical drains and two types of horizontal drains will be analyzed after the completion of the embankment in the near future.
