Egg development and early life history of the Korean natural monument fish Hemibarbus mylodon (Pisces: Cyprinidae) were investigated to provide basic data on biological characteristics and ecological recovery. Adult fish were collected from nature and transferred to the laboratory. For the first time, artificial maturation of females and males succeeded after 15 months of indoor culture. Mature eggs and sperm were obtained using Ovaprim injections (0.5 mL/kg) and then the eggs were fertilized using the dry method in the laboratory. The mature eggs were adhesive, turbid, and greyish; they averaged $2.21{\pm}0.06mm$ (n=30) in diameter. The embryos began to hatch about 78 h after fertilization at a water temperature $20{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, and the newly-hatched larvae were $6.6{\pm}0.75mm$ in total length (TL). At 14 days after hatching, the post-larval individuals were $13.5{\pm}0.23mm$ (TL), and their yolk sacs were completely absorbed. Twenty one days after hatching, they entered the juvenile stage and reached $13.5{\pm}0.23mm$ (TL). At 100 days after hatching, their band patterns, external form, and a pair of barbels were similar to those of adults, and they averaged $33.0{\pm}4.25mm$ (TL). The breeding technology and characteristics of early life history obtained in this study will be very helpful for conservation of H. mylodon in nature.

From a complex systems perspective, ecohydrological systems in forests may be characterized with (1) large networks of components which give rise to complex collective behaviors, (2) sophisticated information processing, and (3) adaptation through self-organization and learning processes. In order to demonstrate such characteristics, we applied the recently proposed 'process networks' approach to a temperate deciduous forest in Gwangneung National Arboretum in Korea. The process network analysis clearly delineated the forest ecohydrological systems as the hierarchical networks of information flows and feedback loops with various time scales among different variables. Several subsystems were identified such as synoptic subsystem (SS), atmospheric boundary layer subsystem (ABLS), biophysical subsystem (BPS), and biophysicochemical subsystem (BPCS). These subsystems were assembled/disassembled through the couplings/decouplings of feedback loops to form/deform newly aggregated subsystems (e.g., regional subsystem) - an evidence for self-organizing processes of a complex system. Our results imply that, despite natural and human disturbances, ecosystems grow and develop through self-organization while maintaining dynamic equilibrium, thereby continuously adapting to environmental changes. Ecosystem integrity is preserved when the system's self-organizing processes are preserved, something that happens naturally if we maintain the context for self-organization. From this perspective, the process networks approach makes sense.
The integrated solid waste management for Seoul Metropolitan city can be established on the basis of the following hierarchy of priorities: 1. Efforts for source reduction should be propelled by both government and citizens to achieve the effects of resource conservation. The adequate production and consumption which are environmentally amenable and sustainable can be induced by the reasonable imposition of deposit money for waste treatment to one-time use products. To accomplish source reduction effectively, the induction of legal and institutional regulation of producer and consumer participation is requisite. 2. For resource recovery, wastes generated should be recycled as far as practicable. Community residents are responsible to separate discharge, the authorities concerned have responsibility of separate collection, and recycling industry should be assissted through tax reduction and financing. Resource separation facilities can be constructed at Kimpo Metropolitan landfill site for wastes not separately collected due to some unavoidable circumstances. 3. Garbage should be composted. Garbage is uneconomical for incineration, because it has high moisture content and low calorie, thus there is no reason for the incineration of garbage even though garbage is classified into combustibles. Composting facilities can be located at sites which are not densely populated and easily accessible to transportation, for example, Kimpo Metropolitan landfill site. Compost produced can be managed by the authorities for the use of fertilizer to a green tract of suburban land and farms. 4. Nonhazardous combustible wastes not recyclable can be utilized for thermal recovery at the incinerators which are completely equipped with pollution control devices. According to the trend of local autonomy and the equity principle of local autonomous entities, incineration facilities of minimal capacity required can be constructed at each districts of Seoul Metropolitan city which have organized local assembly. In case of Yangcheon district, the economically combustible waste quantity is about 260 tons/day which exceeds 150 tons/day, the incineration capacity of existing facility. But, from now on, waste quantity can be reduced substantially by the intensive efforts of citizens for source reduction and recycling and the institutional support of administrative organizations. Especially, it is indispensable for the government to constitute institutional and technological bases that can recycle paper and plastics form 43% of waste generated. A good time for constructing of incineration facilities for municipal solid waste can be postponed to the time that pollution control technologies of domestic enterprises are fully developed to satisfy the standards of air pollution prevention, because the life expectancy of Kimpo Metropolitan landfill site is about 25 years. Within this period, institutional improvements and technological advancements can be attained, while the air qual. ity of Seoul Metropolitan city can be ameliorated to the level to afford incineration facilities. 5. For final disposal, incombustibles and ash are landfilled sanitarily at Kimpo Metropolitan landfill site.
Forest harvest as large scale artificial disturbance makes edge environment in both clear-cutted and forested habitat. To clarify the development and recovery process of forest edge after disturbances is essential to understand vegetation responses and landscape level consequences such as edge-distance. In Korea, after clear-cutting, edge-related changes of environment and vegetation was not clarified yet. In Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) forest, by applying space-for-time approach (sites with undisturbed and 1, 3, 10, 16 yr after cutting), the edge-related change of plant abundance and abiotic factors were determined for 20 line-transect (60 m) and 340 ($1m{\times}5m$) quadrats, and clarified depth and duration of the disturbance. Immediately after edge formation, within 15m form the edge, biotic and abiotic factors such as cover, richness, canopy openness, temperature and moisture content exhibited larger changes compared to forest interior. Plant abundance and abiotic variables were stabilized at the level of forest inside within 16 yr and 10 yr after edge creation, respectively. Woody (tree and shrub) species generally was showed larger increment with proximity to edge than did herb or graminoid species. In addition, negative interactions between woody and herbaceous species were detected during the period of forest edge closure. Our results suggested that depth of forest edge formed by clear-cutting of Korean red pine forest was at least from 15 m to 20 m and edge effect were likely sustained more than 16 years. As the first empirical study on edge-distance between two contrast habitats of clear-cutted and adjacent forest in South Korea, the analytical reality on landscape structure and habitat patches can be improved.

For investigation of adsoption properties of cadmium elimination by wood charcoal, $25m{\ell}$ aqueous cadmium solutions in various concentrations were treated with 0.2 g wood charcoal of Red Oak (Quercus mongolica) for 280 minutes. Almost 100% of cadmium elimination ratio was obtained in the solutions with initial concentration of 20 and 40 ppm in the treatment, whereas they were 75 and 50% in those of 80 and 160 ppm. In the effect of treatment time, the highest amount of cadmium ions was eliminated during the first ten minutes in each solution so that the elimination ratio of each case was over 70% of the maximum elimination value. From the analysis of adsorptive cadmium adsorption mechanism using the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, it was suggested that cadmium ion molecules were adsorbed at the active sites on the charcoal particle in form of one layer. The Gibbs free energy of the adsorption process was calculated in negative value for each solution. This means the adsorption processes are spontaneous which do not require the extra input energy.
Here we focused on tip-burn and blossom-end rot (BER) symptoms in the tomato plants expressing the constitutively active form of $Ca^{2+}/H^+$ antiporter (sCAX1) and/or a Ca-binding protein (calreticulin, CRT) genes during their whole growth period. Conclusively we demonstrated that CRT is able to suppress the tip-burn and BER symptoms that were induced by sCAX1. Under poor nutrition condition, tomato plants overexpressing sCAX1 showed severe necrotic collapses in both roots and shoot polar tissues, which are in accordance with $Ca^{2+}$ deficient symptoms frequently observed in an agricultural cultivation of tomato. Reciprocal grafting trials using sCAX1 and wild type plants revealed that the tip-burn symptom by sCAX1 overexpression is not caused by hindrance of $Ca^{2+}$ uptake from soil. We constructed CRT overexpressing transgenic tomatoes, and crossed them with sCAX1 transgenic plants to investigate the effects of CRT on the symptoms of sCAX1 transgenic plants. Co-expression of sCAX1 and CRT significantly suppressed the $Ca^{2+}$ deficient symptoms of sCAX1 transgenic plants. Those results suggest the model that $Ca^{2+}$ homeostasis disturbed by the overexpression of sCAX1 may be suppressed by the co-expression of CRT.
This study was carried out to compare the conditions of Korean and Japanese forestry. Two countries were appeared same trend in forestry condition, so our forestry in future can be estimated with compared Japanese forestry, but the results obtained are as follows ; 1) The average forest area per capita of the world, Japan and Korea are 0.9, 0.23 and 0.16 ha, respectively, this means that Korean forest area is not sufficient. The growing stock of forest per capita is $22.5m^3$ in Japan and $3.9m^3$ in Korea, but timber consumptions per capita are $1m^3$ in Japan and $0.2m^3$ in Korea. Those mean that both countries have not a plentiful resource of forestry. 2) The forestry production activity becomes gradually stagnation. Both in Korea and Japan, the reforestation and stumpage felling area show gradually decreasing tendency, the artificial forest ratio of total forest area is, at present, 28% in Korea and 40% in Japan. 3) In forestry demand aspect, the ratio of imported timber is 79% in Korea and 62.4% in Japan. Because the price index of timber is lower than the general price index, the dullness of forestry-related industries is expected in future. 4) The forestry labour supply has gradually difficulty because of the reduction in farming labour. 5) The managements of national forests show deficit operation, at present, both in Korea and Japan. The results above mentioned are derived form the poor forest resources, therefore, it is considered that rather more and continuous investment is necessary, but also forestry should be invested in the territorial conservation aspect.
Background: Necdin (NDN), a member of the melanoma antigen family showing imprinted pattern of expression, has been implicated as causing Prader-Willi symptoms, and known to participate in cellular growth, cellular migration and differentiation. The region where NDN is located has been associated to QTLs affecting reproduction and early growth in cattle, but location and functional analysis of the molecular mechanisms have not been established. Methods: Here we report the sequence variation of the entire coding sequence from 72 samples of cattle, yak, buffalo, goat and sheep, and discuss its variation in Bovidae. Median-joining network analysis was used to analyze the variation found in the species. Synonymous and non-synonymous substitution rates were determined for the analysis of all the polymorphic sites. Phylogenetic analysis were carried out among the species of Bovidae to reconstruct their relationships. Results: From the phylogenetic analysis with the consensus sequences of the studied Bovidae species, we found that only 11 of the 26 nucleotide changes that differentiate them produced amino acid changes. All the SNPs found in the cattle breeds were novel and showed similar percentages of nucleotides with non-synonymous substitutions at the N-terminal, MHD and C-terminal (12.3, 12.8 and 12.5%, respectively), and were much higher than the percentage of synonymous substitutions (2.5, 2.6 and 4.9%, respectively). Three mutations in cattle and one in sheep, detected in heterozygous individuals were predicted to be deleterious. Additionally, the analysis of the biochemical characteristics in the most common form of the proteins in each species show very little difference in molecular weight, pI, net charge, instability index, aliphatic index and GRAVY (Table 4) in the Bovidae species, except for sheep, which had a higher molecular weight, instability index and GRAVY. Conclusions: There is sufficient variation in this gene within and among the studied species, and because NDN carry key functions in the organism, it can have effects in economically important traits in the production of these species. NDN sequence is phylogenetically informative in this group, thus we propose this gene as a phylogenetic marker to study the evolution and conservation in Bovidae.
This research sought to examine the strategies of cultural heritage proving the negative history to be registered as world heritage, among the World Heritages registered in UNESCO. Therefore, to comprehend "negative history"and the heritages with "instructive value," the new term of "Remembrance Heritage"was suggested, and such cases of world heritage were analyzed. Especially by analyzing the criteria of being registered by focusing on the cases of similar World Heritages with similar historical background or form as Korean DMZ, the criteria of OUV that may be applied when Korean DMZ is promoted to be registered as World Heritage. The research results may be summarized as the following. First of all, Remembrance Heritage is a place in which events of universal significance have occurred, rather than the historical, artistic, landscape, and scholastic value of the heritage itself, and was evaluated as architecture, landscape, or place in which the events or historical steps could be verified through architectural, landscape, archaeological or technical means. Secondly, Remembrance Heritage was often applied to be registered with the criterion (vi), and criterion (iii) or criterion (iv). Thirdly, in case of the Korean DMZ, application of criterion (iv) as heritage proving the age of cold war and criterion (vi) as symbolic value of peace may be possible.
Currently, liver transplantation is the only available remedy for patients with end-stage liver disease. Conservation of transplanted liver graft is the most important issue as it directly related to patient survival. Carbonyl reductase 1 (CBR1) protects cells against oxidative stress and cell death by inactivating cellular membrane-derived lipid aldehydes. Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury during living-donor liver transplantation is known to form reactive oxygen species. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate whether CBR1 transcription might be increased during liver I/R injury and whether such increase might protect liver against I/R injury. Our results revealed that transcription factor Nrf2 could induce CBR1 transcription in liver of mice during I/R. Pre-treatment with sulforaphane, an activator of Nrf2, increased CBR1 expression, decreased liver enzymes such as aspartate aminotransferase and alanine transaminase, and reduced I/R-related pathological changes. Using oxygen-glucose deprivation and recovery model of human normal liver cell line, it was found that oxidative stress markers and lipid peroxidation products were significantly lowered in cells overexpressing CBR1. Conversely, CBR1 knockdown cells expressed elevated levels of oxidative stress proteins compared to the parental cell line. We also observed that Nrf2 and CBR1 were overexpressed during liver transplantation in clinical samples. These results suggest that CBR1 expression during liver I/R injury is regulated by transcription factor Nrf2. In addition, CBR1 can reduce free radicals and prevent lipid peroxidation. Taken together, CBR1 induction might be a therapeutic strategy for relieving liver I/R injury during liver transplantation.
