  • The units about electricity in 5th and 6th science curriculum for elementary school was analyzed and the elementary students' understanding of related concepts was investigated. This study was to make connection between the research about alternative concepts and writing textbooks. It was found that students' response had following characteristics. They had strong belief that the + and - ends of battery should be connected. However this belief was not complete because students did not understand that the other circuit elements had to be connected properly. When the circuit involve more than one bulbs or batteries, they counted the number of batteries or bulbs only and paid little attention to the connection of them. In explaining circuits and the brightness of the bulbs in the circuits. students tried to explains the circuit using scientific terms but failed to used them properly. Although the concept of resistance was not dealt explicitly. student had reasonable qualitative understanding about resistance. According to response of students, several suggestions might be made for the curriculum. The structure and the circuit elements and the proper connection needs to be taught. Also more emphasis is necessary to pay attention to the connection in addition to the numbers of bulbs or batteries. Finally, it needs to be investigated carefully if it is better to introduce some qualitative model to explain the amount of current through bulb depending on the connection and the number of bulbs. It might also be better to introduce some terms, such as current and resistance with the model.

  • The concept and spatial composition of office have endlessly changed according to social trend. And according to social change, members of office, namely, concept of organization has been changed. Presently, our society finds and needs appearance of office suitable for our society. According to a concept of ecological environment and a concept laying stress on human, various trials have been performed but still, stress of salaried men is treated as social issue. By having connection between psychological healing theory of Max $L{\ddot{\bar{u}}}scher$ and spatial expression elements (content : refuge, self-esteem : prospect, confidence : flow, liberty : void) as a theory, we discussed possibility of aesthetic office landscape could be developed to a type of office which could control emotion that can be a cause of stress and we intended to examine limitation and possibility through case analysis.

  • Objective: This study aimed to reveal pre-service early childhood teachers' perception of children's environmental education using concept mapping and demonstrating its importance. Methods: Based on Kane and Trochim's(2007) procedure, 33 pre-service early childhood teachers conducted brainstorming and statement writing, and then the importance of selected statements were rated by 202 pre-service early childhood teachers. Selected statements were analyzed through multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis. Results: Pre-service early childhood teachers perceived children's environmental education as concept mapping with 2-dimensions and eight clusters. The following eight clusters were established (1) daily practice through hands on experience, (2) nature environment, (3) recognizing and coping with environmental issues, (4) environmental preservation practices, (5) environmental sensitivity and consideration, (6) purpose of children's environmental education, (7) necessity for children's environmental education (8) Practice through connection with child's home and community. And then among the eight clusters, the most important was recognized as 'daily practice through hands on experience', and among the statements 'young children learn through the method of playing in nature and experience nature' was considered the most important. Conclusion/Implications: Based on these results, we discuss the importance of children's environmental education of pre-service early childhood teachers and how to support to develop teacher's training program.

  • In the elementary science classroom, inquiry-based learning activities are often limited to students' hands-on experiences. As a result, students often overlook core concepts they are supposed to acquire from the inquiry activities and show difficulties in applying those concepts in a real life context. To make a connection between the hands-on activities and the concept leaning, a small-group discussion can be considered. In this study, we designed a team-based learning (TBL) model for the elementary science classroom. We developed teaching and learning materials for the "Comfortable Environments" unit in the 6th grade curriculum based on the TBL model. After appling the model with 32 6th grade students, we compared the TBL participants' level of concept understanding and attitudes toward science before and after the intervention, and also compared them with their counterpart control group who participated in a traditional classroom. The results showed that the level of concept understanding of the TBL participants were higher than that of the control group. However, there was no statistically significant difference found in attitudes toward science between the TBL participants and the control group. In addition, the interviews with the TBL participants showed that they positively perceived the TBL experiences.

  • Recently many efforts have been made to improve the efficiency of design and production of the structures using the automation system. But, this work has been progressed as independent or partial system. And, the study on the integrated system is not sufficient in application for practical problems yet. This paper deals with the fundamental concept of modeling system and application method on structural modeling. At first, the core of the integrated system is a shape modeling system that can represent the geometric and topological information. This system must be designed as an open system to be combined with each independent automation system. The appropriate concept to realize this system on structural modeling is object oriented modeling and this enables to integrate each automation system successfully, This concept was applied to automatic mesh generation. For shape modeling system, half-edge data structure that is being used in solid modeling was modified to handle the plate structure in the plane. And, to generate the triangular meshes, direct node connection method was used. And, as a result, the integrated system that generate the meshes of two dimensional structure automatically was realized. And, programmed by C++, these systems can be combined with other systems easily and have good reusability.

  • Effective mastering and learning of basic organic chemical concepts is pivotal to ensure students continue to excel to the higher levels of organic chemistry learning. Concept learning is crucial for first-year organic chemistry students so that they can comprehend and understand a concept better and able to make connection to problems. In the present paper, the authors have implemented the Interactive Anonymous Quiz (IAQ) with "must-have" features in the organic chemistry course as a teaching tool to instill students' interest and enhance conceptual understanding in organic chemistry. The effectiveness of this activity was examined and evaluated through students' reflective writing. Students showed positive learning outcome on the implemented activity as reflected by the reflective writings. In addition, this activity could be employed as an activity to check on students' concept understanding, to instill students' interest in organic chemistry course and to improve on students' weakest topic in organic chemistry in the future classes.

  • A new algorithm for planning a collision-free path based on algebraic curve is developed and the concept of collision-free Path Space (PS) is introduced. This paper presents a Geometry Mapping (GM) based on two straight curves in which the intermediate connection point is organized in elliptic locus ($\delta$, $\theta$). The GM produces two-dimensional PS that is used to create the shortest collision-free path. The elliptic locus of intermediate connection point has a special property in that the total distance between the focus points through a point on ellipse is the same regardless of the location of the intermediate connection point on the ellipse. Since the radial distance, a, represents the total length of the path, the collision-free path can be found as the GM proceeds from $\delta$=0 (the direct path) to $\delta$=$\delta$$\_$max/(the longest path) resulting in the minimum time search. The GM of elliptic workspace (EWS) requires calculation of interference in circumferential direction only. The procedure for GM includes categorization of obstacles to .educe necessary calculation. A GM based on rectangular workspace (RWS) using Cartesian coordinate is also considered to show yet another possible GM. The transformations of PS among Circular Workspace Geometry Mapping (CWS GM) , Elliptic Workspace Geometry Mapping (EWS GM) , and Rectangular Workspace Geometry Mapping (RWS GM), are also considered. The simulations for the EWS GM on various computer systems are carried out to measure performance of algorithm and the results are presented.

  • Matsumoto Makoto is regarded as founding father of the Japanese school of Finsler geometry because he established the Japanese Society of Finsler Geometry in 1968 and organized the Symposium every year since then. In this paper, we investigate how Matsumoto initiated the study of this topic leaping over geographical limit and how Yano Kentaro and Kawaguchi Akitsugu had affected Matsumoto in the formation of the Japanese school of Finsler geometry. We also take a view of the role of É. Cartan who invented the concept of the connection in early 20th century in this regard.
