  • MPEG4 High Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding (HE-AAC) and MPEG Surround are one of the most efficient combinations for low bit rate multi-channel audio coding. Based on the fact that these two codecs have identical quadrature mirror filter (QMF) analysis and synthesis structures, we propose a dual-domain connection scheme for the codecs. Specifically two time-domain connection methods are analyzed and compared to the QMF subband-domain connection method. Experimental results show that both the time-domain connection methods cause no subjective sound quality degradation compared to the QMF subband-domain connection method, which verifies that one can select either of them depending on application scenarios.

  • This paper aims to probabilistically evaluate performance of two types of I beam to box column (IBBC) connection. With the objective of considering the variability of seismic loading demand, statistical features of the inter-story drift ratio corresponding to the second, fifth and eleventh story of a 12-story steel special moment resisting frames are extracted through incremental dynamic analysis at global collapse state. Variability of geometrical variables and material strength are also taken into account. All of these random variables are exported as inputs to a probabilistic finite element model which simulates the connection. At the end, cumulative distribution functions of local seismic demand for each component of each connection are provided using histogram sampling. Through a parametric study on probabilistic local seismic demand, the influence of some geometrical random variables on the performance of IBBC connections is demonstrated. Furthermore, the probabilistic study revealed that IBBC connection with widened flange has a better performance than the un-widened flange. Also, a design procedure is proposed for WF connections to achieve a same connection performance in different stories.

  • We present a semi-rigid connection estimation method by using cross modal strain energy method. While rigid or pinned assumptions are adopted for steel frames in traditional modeling via finite element method, the actual behavior of the connections is usually neither. Semi-rigid joints enable connections to be modeled as partially restrained, which improves the quality of the model. To identify the connection stiffness and update the FE model, a newly-developed cross modal strain energy (CMSE) method is extended to incorporate the connection stiffness estimation. Meanwhile, the relations between the correction coefficients for the CMSE method are derived, which enables less modal information to be used in the estimation procedure. To illustrate the capability of the proposed parameter estimation algorithm, a four-story frame structure is demonstrated in the numerical studies. Several cases, including Semi-rigid joint(s) on single connection and on multi-connections, without and with measurement noise, are investigated. Numerical results indicate that an excellent updating is achievable and the connection stiffness can be estimated by CMSE method.

  • Dams are inevitably planned to be built on thick overburden with high permeability and deformability. The connection part between concrete cut-off wall in overburden and earth core in dam body is not only a key part of the anti-seepage system, but also a weak position. Large uneven settlement will be aroused at the concoction part. However, the interaction behavior and the scope of the connection part cannot be determined effectively. In this paper, numerical analysis of a high earth core dam built on thick overburden was carried out with large deformation FE method. The mechanical behavior of the connection part was detail studied. It can be drawn that there is little differences in dam integral deformation for different analysis method, but big differences were found at the connection part. The large deformation analysis method can reasonably describe the process that concrete wall penetrates into soil. The high plasticity clay has stronger ability to adapt to large uneven deformation which can reduce stress level, and stress state of concrete wall is also improved. The scope of high plasticity clay zone in the connection part can be determined according to stress level of soils and penetration depth of concrete wall.

  • In spite of 6.8 magnitude and the neighborhood of the epicenter, the steel moment frame survived after Northridge earthquake without collapse or casualties. However, following investigation revealed that there were severe damages at the column-weld interface of welded flange-bolted web (WFBW) steel moment connection, which was believed to be economic and safe from earthquakes based on experience and past tests. In this paper, this unexpected brittle fracture of the steel moment connection is explored using linear elastic fracture mechanics and post-Northridge tests. A method to predict the brittle fracture strength of the steel moment connection is proposed. Using this method, the failure mode of the WFBW connection and reduced beam section (RBS) connection are presented.

  • In order to propose ways to implement mathematical connection between algebra and geometry, this study reinterpreted and visualized the Khayyam's geometric method solving the cubic equations using two conic sections and the Al-Kāshi's method of constructing of angle trisection using a cubic equation. Khayyam's method is an example of a geometric solution to an algebraic problem, while Al-Kāshi's method is an example of an algebraic a solution to a geometric problem. The construction and property of conics were presented deductively by the theorem of "Stoicheia" and the Apollonius' symptoms contained in "Conics". In addition, I consider connections that emerged in the alternating process of algebra and geometry and present meaningful Implications for instruction method on mathematical connection.

  • The Inclined Earth Retaining Structure (IER) is the structure using an integrated system of both front supports and inclined back supports to increase the stability for excavation. The IER is a structurally stable temporary excavation method using the back supports restraining the lateral displacement of the front supports as stabilizing piles. The back supports connected to the front supports significantly reduce the earth pressure acting on both the front wall and the front supports by distributing it to the back supports in order to increase the structural stability. In this study, mechanical behaviors of IER according to the head connection type using fixed- or hinge-connection were found by performing numerical analysis and laboratory model tests in the sandy ground. The maximum lateral displacement of fixed-connection was 88% of that of hinge-connection in the numerical analysis. The lateral displacement of fixed-connection was 7% of that of hinge-connection in the laboratory model test results. Furthermore, the earth pressure of the fixed-connection was 67% of that of the hinge-connection in the shear-strain analysis results of the model ground.

  • As reviewing of current trend on PC connection details, owing to effective stress transfer in the connection, it grow to increase that use of mechanical splices, reinforcements or welded splices, and prestressing. However such devices as reinforcement, mechanical splices entail not only more cost resulted from materials but also extra construction process so as to cause PC used method to lower competition against conventional method. Therefore more enhanced connection details which help working process simplified and construction cost reduced. In this research, as replace 9.3mm 7strand for reinforcement, it is attempt to devise connection detail which makes workability improve and confirm effective stress transfer in the region of connection. The experimental research is proceeded by partial tension test of specimen. The splice lengths of 7strand is decided to be variations. The flexural capability is verified to depend on spice length. An an appropriate splice length could be also determined as a precedent research on improving PC connection detail.

  • Glass fiber reinforced composite decks have high-strength, light-weight and high durability. The composite decks having vertical snap-fit connections are designed for pedestrian bridges and their structural behaviour are studied. The existing connection method of the composite decks in horizontal direction is replaced by the developed snap-fit connection method in vertical direction. The section shape of the composite decks having the vertical snap-fit connection is designed. The safety of the vertical snap-fit connection is verified by finite element analysis.

  • The connection strength between wall facing and geosynthetics should be evaluated by experimental method in the design of reinforced earth wall. However, the evaluation result of connection strength using the typical design method, FHWA(1996) and NCMA(1997), is excessively because of a safety factors. Therefore, this study is conducted in connection strength test between wall facing and geosynthetics, then the test result is applied to the design case by NCMA, FHWA and Soong & Koener(1997). The results confirmed that the evaluation method by Soong & Koener, which is used ultimate connection strength by connection strength test in allowable connection strength, is satisfied with stable in design.
