  • In this paper, a mechanism connecting all input edges with minimum length through Steiner tree is proposed. Edges are convertible into communication lines, roads, railroads or trace of moving object. Proposed mechanism could be applied to connect these edges with minimum cost. In our experiments where input edge number and maximum connections per edge are used as input parameters, our mechanism made connection length decrease average 6.8%, while building time for a connecting solution increase average 192.0% comparing with the method using minimum spanning tree. The result shows our mechanism might be well applied to the applications where connecting cost is more important than building time for a connecting solution.

  • The existing edge detection methods can not represent the real edge of object at fitting point or detect the edge which has unsufficient connecting trait. Especially, the two-fold thick edge detected by these methods cannot coincide real boundary of subject and it's location. To overcome these problems, we introduce the Genetic Algorithm(GA) in edge detection. The energy function is the value of fixel's satisfaction degree to edge condition. And it consists of the fitness value to image formation type, fitness value to connecting trait to it's neighboring edge and evalulation function which can represents the edge at fitting point as one fixel. This method is superior to remove the noise in edge detection than the existing methods. And it also detects the clear and exact edge because it can find the one fixel which is located at fitting point and has strong connecting trait.

  • In this paper, a mechanism that produces an approximation edges minimum spanning tree swiftly using virtual nodes called portals dividing given edges into same distance sub-edges. The approximation edges minimum spanning tree can be used in many useful areas as connecting communication lines, road networks and railroad systems. For 3000 random input edges, when portal distance is 0.3, tree building time decreased 29.74% while the length of the produced tree increased 1.8% comparing with optimal edge minimum spanning tree in our experiment. When portal distance is 0.75, tree building time decreased 39.96% while the tree length increased 2.96%. The result shows this mechanism might be well applied to the applications that may allow a little length overhead, but should produce an edge connecting tree in short time. And the proposed mechanism can produce an approximation edge minimum spanning tree focusing on tree length or on building time to meet user requests by adjusting portal distance or portal discard ratio as parameter.

  • This paper shows the tonal patterns of English conjunctive utterances produced by Korean speakers of English, presenting that Korean speakers realize either the H - phrase tone or the H% boundary tone at the phrase-final part of the conjunctive utterances. Based on Pierrehumbert & Hirschberg's (1990) claim that either H- or H% tone indicates that a phrase is related to the following one, Korean speakers seem to produce the satisfactory patterns of edge tones in conjunctive sentences. In the experiment, we made up conjunctive sentences including both coordinate conjunctions such as and, but, or, and so and subordinate conjunctions like if, when and though. We varied the stimuli according to the existence of a comma and the lengths of connecting words and phrases. We also divided the subjects into two levels of English proficiency based on their English written test scores to see if Korean speakers' performance ability of edge tones is related with their general competence of English. Results show that Korean speakers produced 84% of the H- phrase tone in intermediate phrases and H-L% and L-H% boundary tones in intonational phrases. Also, coordinate and subordinate conjunctions show little difference in their tonal contours, and the existence of a comma or the lengths of connecting words and phrases do not affect Korean speakers' production of the H- phrasal tone and the H% boundary tone. This may suggest that pitch accents, rather than edge tones, should be put more focus on in teaching English intonation in Korea as much work has already shown that Korean speakers have serious problem with producing pitch accents in speaking English.

  • In this paper, a mechanism connecting all weighted migration routes with minimum cost with EGOSST is proposed. Weighted migration routes may be converted to weighted input edges considered as not only traces but also traffics or trip frequencies of moving object on communication lines, roads or railroads. Proposed mechanism can be used in more wide and practical area than mechanisms considering only moving object traces. In our experiments, edge number, maximum weight for input edges, and detail level for grid are used as input parameters. The mechanism made connection cost decrease average 1.07% and 0.43% comparing with the method using weight minimum spanning tree and weight steiner minimum tree respectively. When grid detail level is 0.1 and 0.001, while each execution time for a connecting solution increases average 97.02% and 2843.87% comparing with the method using weight minimum spanning tree, connecting cost decreases 0.86% and 1.13% respectively. This shows that by adjusting grid detail level, proposed mechanism might be well applied to the applications where designer must grant priority to reducing connecting cost or shortening execution time as well as that it can provide good solutions of connecting migration routes with weights.

  • In order to prevent the sharp edge during the side impact, a cause analysis and CAE based risk prediction were carried out in this study. It was found that sharp edge occurs mainly because of stiffness difference between the major parts and structural stress concentration. It could be improved by directly reinforcing the crack initiation region or by weakening the joints connecting the parts. The fracture criterion based on major in-plain strain was suggested and the risk prediction process for sharp edge prevention was established.

  • Detecting the ego-lane of a vehicle (the lane on which the vehicle is currently running) is one of the basic techniques for a smart car. Vision sensing is a widely-used method for the ego-lane detection. Existing studies usually find road lane lines by detecting edge pixels in the image from a vehicle camera, and then connecting the edge pixels using Hough Transform. However, this approach takes rather long processing time, and too many straight lines are often detected resulting in false detections in various road conditions. In this paper, we find the lane lines by scanning only a limited number of horizontal lines within a small image region of interest. The horizontal image line scan replaces the edge detection process of existing methods. Automatic thresholding and spatiotemporal filtering procedures are also proposed in order to make our method reliable. In the experiments using real road images of different conditions, the proposed method resulted in high success rate.

  • This paper proposes a new approach to extract contour of moving object from compressed video stream. We segment the area of moving object by using motion vector and extract the motion object block from it. And then we describe the connectivity direction of outline moving block, detect the edge related to connectivity direction in the block and finally obtain the contour by connecting the edges. This can divide the moving object only with motion vector and detect the exact contour on the basis of the edge automatically. Also, we can reduce spending time using motion block and remove the noise with directional edge. The experimental results demonstrate the accurate and effective qualify of the proposed method.

  • All landscapes are mosaics of habitat patches of different types. Therefore, there are always edged between habitat patches in a landscape. Forest animal has an important role in vegetation development and maintenance by seed dispersal around forest. Movement of animals depends on the spatially heterogeneous structure and pattern of vegetation landscapes because each animal has special habitats in a landscape. Especially, forast edge with high permeability and prey density is one of the important habitats to the animals. Therefore, understanding the ecological characteristics of the forest edges as a corridor connecting mosaic vegetation patches is necessa교 새 establish the strategies for the nature conservation and sustainable vegetation management. Under this idea, we examined the animal influenced on pine seeds as one of the method of monitoring the animal activity in mosaic vegetation. Man-made mosaic vegetations including open, edge and inner forests were carefully selected in the rural landscape. We carried out predation test on pine seeds during one year. A result was that damages on seed was more significant at forest edge than inner and open forest. Pine seed on seedbeds was mainly attacked by squirrels and mice than birds. Pine seed was damaged by squirrels in different types of vegetation by seasons. Rate of seed predation at forest edge was, in special, higher than that of other sites. According to this results, it is suggested that the relationship between animal behavior and spatial vegetation structure relating to human impact such as the distance from settlement to vegetation appeares to be in the rural vegetation landscape.

  • A wavelet method is applied to the analysis of gravity potential. One scaling function is proposed to generate wavelet. The scaling function is shown to be replaced to the Green’s function in gravity potential. The upward continuation can be expressed as a wavelet transform i.e. convolution with the scaling function. The scaling factor indicates the height variation. The multiscale edge detection is carried by connecting the local maxima of the wavelet transform at scales. The multiscale edge represents discontinuity of the geological structure. The multiscale edge method is applied to gravity data from Masan and Changwon.
