A new method to prevent reinforced concrete columns from brittle failure. The method is called transversely reinforcing method in which only the critical regions are confined in steel tube. The steel tubes can change the failure mode of the latter columns from the shear to the flexure. The steel tubes also increase the compressive strength, shear strength and deformation capacity of the infilled concrete. The following conclusions are reached on bases of the study on the seismic performance of the high-strength RC rectangualr short columns confined in steel tube with shear span tho depth ratio of 2.0 The brittle shear failure of high-strength reinforced concrete short columns with large amount of longitudinal bars, which cannot prevented by using the maximum amount of welded hoops, can be prevented by using the steel tube which confines all the maximum amount of welded hoops, can be prevented by using the steel tube which confines all the concrete inclusive of cover concrete. High-strength RC short columns confined in rectangular steel tube provided excellent enhancement of seismic performance but, found that plastic buckling of the steel tube in the hinge regions tended to occur when the columns were subjected to large cyclic lateral displacements. In order to prevent the plastic buckling when the columns lies on large on cyclic lateral displacements, the steel ribs were used for columns. Tests have established that the columns provide excellent enhancement of seismic performance of inadequately confined columns.
This paper is a fundamental study on the mechanical properties of the high performance concrete confined with metal lath, glass and carbon fiber laterally. According to the results, it shows that the compressive strength increases by 9%, 8% and 6% in metal lath carbon fiber and glass fiber in case of W/B 30% respectively. In case of W/B 30% and 40%, flecxural strength shows largely in order of carbon fiber, metal lath, glass fiber. In strain-stress curve with the kinds of material for lateral confinement, while brittleness failure occurs in plain concrete just after maximum load, it is improved in some degree in confined concrete due to increase of the strain by increase of toughness. But, elastic modulus shows the similar tendency between confined concrete and plain concrete. Length change ratio by drying shrinkage shows little a bit in order of carbon fiber, glass fiber and metal lath due to confinement.
This investigation presents an analysis procedure for simulating the compressive behavior of a rectangular concrete column confined by fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) under uniaxial load. That is, the entire stress-strain curve can be drawn through the present analysis procedure. The modified Mander's stress-strain model (Mander, et al. 1988) and finite element method are adopted in this analysis procedure. The numerical analysis results are compared with the experimental results to verify the accuracy of the analysis procedure. This study offers a useful analysis procedure of researching the compressive behavior of rectangular concrete columns confined by FRP. Two main parameters, the number of FRP layers and the radius of the round corners of a rectangular column, are investigated. The numerical results show that non-uniform stresses occur and reduce the sectional effective area owing to the geometry of the confined rectangular column. The stresses are concentrated at the corners of the rectangular column. Compressive strength of a rectangular column increases greatly because the number of FRP layers increase. The maximum predicted compressive stress of the rectangular column has approximately 10% error as compared to the experimental results. Comparing the numerical and experimental results demonstrates that the accuracy of this analysis procedure is credible. Besides, the stress-strain curves of the R30 models, which are rectangular concrete column with large radius of round corners, are almost bilinear. This calculated results conform to the expectation and show the present analysis procedure are more suitable than Mander's model (1988) to analyze the compressive behavior of the rectangular concrete column confined by FRP.
To investigate the effective seismic strengthening methods for masonry walls in developing countries, a total of four confined masonry (CM) walls were constructed and tested. In order to investigate the effect of the height of application point of lateral loads and reinforcing steel bars in walls and columns for the improvement of the seismic behavior of confined concrete block masonry walls, an experimental research program is conducted. The heights of inflection point considered were 0.67 and 1.11 times the height of the wall measured from the top of foundation beam. The constant vertical axial stress applied was 0 MPa. During the test, cracking patterns, load-deflection data, and strains in reinforcement and walls in critical locations was measured. From test data, it was showed that the seismic performance of confined concrete block masonry walls was significantly affected by test variables.
This paper describes a model on shear strength of RC columns strengthened with FRP sheets. In this study, we propose a confined concrete strength model of RC columns confined by transverse reinforcement as well as FRP sheet by introducing corresponding effective confinement coefficient for each confined concrete area. Then, a shear strength model of the confined RC columns is proposed by lower and upper bound limit analysis which are based on the truss-arch model theory and shear band failure theory, respectively. Along with shear test data obtained from strengthened column specimens, the developed analytical models are verified. The comparison shows that the proposed model can be used effectively for the prediction of both ultimate strength and required amount of strengthening in retrofit design for RC columns.
Recently, the continuous fiber materials has become more important materials to repair and to reinforce concrete structural members. Continuous fiber meshes are effective for shear and confining reinforcement and provide excellent durability when combined with high strength mortar The purpose of this study is to verify the relationship between concrete strength and the ductility of inner concrete confined laterally by continuous fiber meshes. For this study, Experimental studies were conducted by compressive members using the cast frame of high strength mortar and continuous fiber meshes. Therefore, the result shows that compressive strength and ductility has improved according to the amount of the fiber meshes, and that the lateral confined effect of members with 3- or 4-axis mesh arrangement is bigger than that of members with 2-axis mesh. These data have to be used to verify the characteristic of concrete structure members reinforced continuous fiber mesh.
The aim of this paper is to develop design-oriented models for the prediction of the ultimate strength and ultimate axial strain for concrete confined with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) wraps. Twenty of most used and recent design-oriented models developed to predict the strength and strain of GFRP-confined concrete in circular sections are selected and evaluated basing on a database of 163 test results of concrete cylinders confined with GFRP wraps subjected to uniaxial compression. The evaluation of these models is performed using three statistical indices namely the coefficient of the determination (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE), and the average absolute error (AAE). Based on this study, new strength and strain models for GFRP-wrapped concrete are developed using regression analysis. The obtained results show that the proposed models exhibit better performance and provide accurate predictions over the existing models.
This paper presents the results of a comprehensive experimental investigation on the compressive behaviour of steel tube-confined concrete (STCC) stub columns with active and passive confinement. To create active confinement in STCC columns, an innovative technique is used in which steel tube is laterally pre-tensioned while the concrete core is simultaneously pre-compressed by applying pressure on fresh concrete. A total of 135 STCC specimens with active and passive confinement are tested under axial compression load and their compressive strength, ultimate strain capacity, axial and lateral stress-strain curves and failure mode are evaluated. The test variables include concrete compressive strength, outer diameter to wall thickness ratio of steel tube and prestressing level. It is shown that applying active confinement on STCC specimens can considerably improve their mechanical properties. However, applying higher prestressing levels and keeping the applied pressure for a long time do not considerably affect the mechanical properties of actively confined specimens. Based on the results of this study, new empirical equations are proposed to estimate the axial strength and ultimate strain capacity of STCC stub columns with active and passive confinement.
The reliable pushover analysis of RC structures requires a realistic prediction of moment-curvature relations, which can be obtained by utilizing proper constitutive models for the stress-strain relationships of laterally confined concrete members. Theoretical approach of Mander is still a single stress-strain model, which employs a multiaxial failure surface for the determination of the ultimate strength of confined concrete. Alternatively, this paper introduces a simple and practical failure criterion for confined concrete with emphasis on introduction of significant modifications into the two-parameter Drucker-Prager model. The new criterion is only applicable to triaxial compression stress state which is exactly the case in the RC columns. Unlike many existing multi-parameter criteria proposed for the concrete fracture, the model needs only the compressive strength of concrete as an independent parameter and also implies for the influence of the Lode angle on the material strength. Adopting Saenz equation for stress-strain plots, satisfactory agreement between the measured and predicted results for the available experimental test data of confined normal and high strength concrete specimens is obtained. Moreover, it is found that further work involving the confinement pressure is still encouraging since the confinement model of Mander overestimates the ultimate strength of some RC columns.
This paper aims to analytically investigate the effect of shear stress at the concrete-steel interface on the mechanical behavior of the circular steel tube-confined concrete (STCC) stub columns with active and passive confinement subjected to axial compression. Nonlinear 3D finite element models divided into the four groups, i.e. circumferential-grooved, talc-coated, lubricated, and normal groups, with active and passive confinement were developed. An innovative method was used to simulate the actively-confined specimens, and then, the results of the finite element models were compared with those of the experiments previously conducted by the authors. It was revealed that both the predicted peak compressive strength and stress-strain curves have good agreement with the corresponding values measured for the confined columns. Then, the mechanical properties of the active and passive specimens such as the concrete-steel interaction, longitudinal and hoop stresses of the steel tube, confining pressure applied to the concrete core, and compressive stress-strain curves were analyzed. Furthermore, a parametric study was performed to explore the effects of the concrete compressive strength, steel tube diameter-to-wall thickness ratio, and prestressing level on the compressive behavior of the STCC columns. The results indicate that reducing or removing the interfacial shear stress in the active and passive specimens leads to an increase in the hoop stress and confining pressure, while the longitudinal stress along the steel tube height experiences a decrease. Moreover, prestressing via the presented method is capable of improving the compressive behavior of STCC columns.
