Conductive polymers are polymers that conduct electricity like metal conductors. Unlike typical organic polymers, they are polymers that have the electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of metals or semiconductors. For Example, these conductive polymers include Polypyrrole (PPy), Polyaniline (PANI), and Polythiophene (PT). On the other hand, Insulating polymers do not conduct electricity well while providing insulation, which is the opposite of conductivity. With the exception of conductive polymers, most polymers are non-conductors. Insulating polymers include polyimide (PI), polystyrene (PS), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH, PVA, or PVAl). Although many different polymers exist, we have simply illustrated the properties and recent developments of conductive and insulating polymers, which have opposite properties.
Biomimetic terpene sensors which have high sensitivity and stability have been fabricated using moleculary imprinted polymer (MIP) technology. Since it is impossible to make a resistive type sensor due to the high resistance of MIP, we improved the sensor by adding conductive polymers. We investigated the sensitivity of resistive type sensors with nano particles depending on the amount of conductive polymers. The MIP membrane contained the methacrylic acid as functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross linker, which formed specific cavities originated by the target terpene molecules. The mixture of MIP and the conductive polymer was coated on the patterns of interdigit electrodes on the alumina substrate. The fabricated sensors showed their highest specific sensitivities exposed to 500 ppm target gases : limonene 0.055 at 40% of amount of conductive polymers and geraniol $5.84{\times}10^{-4}$ at 20% of amount of conductive polymers. In conclusion, we found that the terpene sensors are affected by the target molecules, functional monomers and the conductive polymers.
This study demonstrates transparent electrodes with characteristics desirable for touch screen panels using carbon nanotubes (CNTs). This has been accomplished by depositing CNTs on glass substrates via spray coating and then depositing thin conductive polymer films on the CNTs via spin coating. For all of the samples, such as CNTs, conductive polymers, and polymer-coated CNTs, the surface morphologies, sheet resistances, visible transmittances, chromatic properties are characterized as functions of their preparation conditions, such as the spray times for CNTs and the spin speeds for conductive polymers. The experimental results confirm that only the polymer-coated CNTs can satisfy all of the requirements that are required for electrodes of touch screen panels, such as the sheet resistance lower than $100{\Omega}/sq$, the visible transmittance higher than 80 %, and the yellowness smaller than 1.
Thermoelectric (TE) heating and cooling devices, which are able to directly convert thermal energy into electrical energy and vice versa, are effective and have exhibited a potential for energy harvesting. With the increasing consumer demands for various wearable electronics, organic-based TE composite materials offer a promise for the TE devices applications. Conductive polymers are widely used as flexible TE materials replacing inorganic materials due to their flexibility, low thermal conductivity, mechanical flexibility, ease of processing, and low cost. In this review, we briefly introduce the latest research trends in the flexible TE technology and provide a comprehensive summary of specific conductive polymer-based TE material fabrication technologies. We also summarize the manufacture for high-efficiency TE composites through the complexation of a conductive polymer matrix/inorganic TE filler. We believe that this review will inspire further research to improve the TE performance of conductive polymers.
New monomers, possessing various alkyl substituents on propylene dioxypyrrole, were synthesized. The monomers could be easily polymerized to produce highly conductive and soluble polymers. The corresponding polymers showed excellent solubility, retaining electrochemical and optical properties of their parent polymer [poly(propylene dioxypyrrole)]. The conductivities of chemically prepared polymers were quite high in a range of 20 and $60\;Scm^{-1}$. Solubility of the polymer in a common organic solvent was as high as no polymer is deposited on an electrode. The redox potentials of the electrochemically prepared polymers revealed quite stable electro-activity during repeated redox switching up to 500 times. The optoelectrochemistry studies also showed distinct color changes of the polymers upon changing the doping state, indicating strong absorption peaks at 400~600 nm in reduced states and complete bleaching in fully oxidized states.
The paper describes the preparation and characterization of conductive polyaniline-modified polymers by growing of aniline onto functionalized poly(styrene-co-p-methylstyrene) [P(St-co-MSt)]. For this purpose, P(St-co-MSt) was synthesized via nitroxide mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) and then N-boromosuccinimide was used for introduction of bromine to the benzylic positions of copolymer. Afterwards, 1,4-phenylenediamine was linked to the brominated P(St-co-MSt) and functionalized copolymer $[P(St-co-MSt)-NH_2]$ was prepared. The graft copolymerization of aniline monomers onto functionalized P(St-co-MSt) was initiated by oxidized phenylamine groups after addition of ammonium peroxydisulfate (APS), and p-toluenesulfonic acid-doped PANI was chemically grafted onto P(St-co-MSt) via oxidation polymerization. The obtained terpolymer was studied by FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and its thermal behaviour were examined by DSC and TGA analyses. The conductivity of terpolymer was measured by four-point probe method and electroactivity was measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The solubility of P(St-co-MSt)-g-PANI was examined in common organic solvents.
The electrical conductive polymers (ECPs) reported at my research group are introduced in this review, which works are started from the late Professor Su-Moon Park's pioneering research for polyaniline at the University of New Mexico. The electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties and their applications to sensor and energy conversion systems are briefly described. At first, the growth and degradation mechanism of polyaniline describes and we extend to polypyrrole, polyazulene, polydiaminonaphthalenes, and polyterthiophene derivatives. In addition, the preparation of monomer precursors having functional groups is briefly described that can give us many exceptional applications for several chemical reactions. We describe the application of these ECPs for the fabrication of chemical sensors, biosensors, biofuel cells, and solar cells.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are collecting keen interests as an advanced substituent of electrolyte solution as well as novel solvents. In the present talk, I will introduce some strategies to fix IL structure on polymer chains to prepare polar polymers with low glass transition temperature. Namely, cationic, anionic, and zwitterionic monomers have been prepared, and they have been homopolymerized or copolymerized to prepare polymer electrolytes with different properties. The polymers themselves showed very poor ionic conductivity, but it was improved by suitable spacer between charged site and main chain. Other unique characteristics of functional ILs and new polymerized ionic liquids will also be mentioned.
