This paper aims to explore the mechanical behavior and moment-rotation model of blind bolted joints between concrete-filled double skin steel tubular columns and steel-concrete composite beams. For this type of joint, the inner tube and sandwiched concrete were additionally identified as basic components compared with CFST blind bolted joint. A modified moment-rotation model for this type of connection was developed, of which the compatibility condition and mechanical equilibrium were employed to determine the internal forces of basic components and neutral axis. Following this, load transfer mechanism among the inner tube, sandwiched concrete and outer tube was discussed to assert the action area of the components. Subsequently, assembly processes of basic coefficients in terms of their stiffness and resistances based on the component method by simplifying them as assemblages of springs in series or in parallel. Finally, an experimental investigation on four substructure joints with CFDST columns for validation purposes was carried out to capture the connection details. The predicted results derived from the mechanical models coincided well with the experimental results. It is demonstrated that the proposed mechanical model is capable of evaluating the complete moment-rotation relationships of blind bolted CFDST column composite connections.
In this paper a novel mathematical model and its analytical solution of global buckling behaviour of slender elastic concrete-filled double-skin tubular (CFDST) columns with finite compliance between the steel tubes and a sandwiched concrete core is derived for the first time. The model is capable of investigating the influence of various basic parameters on critical buckling loads of CFDST columns. It is shown that the elastic buckling load of circular and slender CFDST columns is independent on longitudinal contact stiffness, but, on the other hand, it can be considerably dependent on circumferential contact stiffness. The increasing of the circumferential contact stiffness increases the critical buckling load. Furthermore, it is shown that analytical results can agree well with the experimental and numerical results if the calibrated values of circumferential contact stiffness are used in the calculations. Moreover, it is shown that the contact between the steel tubes and a sandwiched concrete core of tested large-scale CFDST columns used in the comparison is relatively weak. Finally, the proposed analytical results can be used as a benchmark solution.
The paper makes the experimental and finite-element-analysis investigation on the seismic behavior of the rebar-penetrated joint between gangue concrete filled steel tubular column and reinforced gangue concrete beam under low cyclic reversed loading. Two specimens are designed and conducted for the experiment to study the seismic behavior of the rebar-penetrated joint under cyclic loading. Then, finite element analysis models of the rebar-penetrated joint are developed using ABAQUS 6.10 to serve as the complement of the experiment and further analyze the seismic behavior of the rebar-penetrated joint. Finite element analysis models are also verified by the experimental results. Finally, the hysteretic performance, the bearing capacity, the strength degradation, the rigidity degradation, the ductility and the energy dissipation of the rebar-penetrated joint are evaluated in detail to investigate the seismic behavior of the rebar-penetrated joint through experimental results and finite element analysis results. The research demonstrates that the rebar-penetrated joint between gangue concrete filled steel tubular column and reinforced gangue concrete beam, with full and spindle-shaped load-displacement hysteretic curves, shows generally the high ductility and the outstanding energy-dissipation capacity. As a result, the rebar-penetrated joint exhibits the excellent seismic performance and meets the earthquake-resistant requirements of the codes in China. The research provides some references and suggestions for the application of the rebar-penetrated joint in the projects.
A new type of moment-resisting bolted connection was developed for use in composite steel- concrete construction to connect composite open section steel beams to concrete filled steel square tubular columns. The connection was made possible using anchored blind bolts along with two through bolts. It was designed to act compositely with the in-situ reinforced concrete slab to achieve an enhanced stiffness and strength. The developed connection was incorporated in the design of a medium rise (five storey) commercial building which was located in low to medium seismicity regions. The lateral load resisting system for the design building consisted of moment resisting frames in two directions. A major full scale test on a sub-assembly of a perimeter moment-resisting frame of the model building was conducted to study the system behaviour incorporating the proposed connection. The behaviour of the proposed connection and its interaction with the floor slab under cyclic loading representing the earthquake events with return periods of 500 years and 2500 years was investigated. The proposed connection was categorized as semi rigid for unbraced frames based on the classification method presented in Eurocode 3. Furthermore, the proposed connection, composite with the floor slab, successfully provided adequate lateral load resistance for the model building.
When steel tube as a column is filled with concrete, it is common that the load-bearing capacities of CFST(Concrete Filled Steel Tube) column are increased substantially, And the CFST column can obtain a capacity of fire resistance without any additional detail on the surface of the steel tube for fire protection. In order to clarify the behavior of CFST column during fire occurrence, a theoretical study is performed, that is, a thermal analysis is used to find temperature gradient dependent on the time on the steel tube and the infilled concrete. N-M (axial force-moment) interaction curves are summarized under the consideration for time dependent variation. The material properties of concrete and steel in accordance with a temperature variation are referred to the existing general data. Thermal transient analyses are performed by finite element method through ANSYS and then these results are verified by comparing with the existing test results. On the basis of analytical results, load-carrying capacities (N-M interaction curves) are calculated by numerical analysis method.
In current engineering practice, circular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns have been used as effective structural components due to their significant structural and economic benefits. To apply these structural components into steel-concrete composite moment resisting frames, increasing number of research into the column-base connections of circular CFST columns have been found. However, most of the previous research focused on the strength, rigidity and seismic resisting performance of the circular CFST column-base connections. The present paper attempts to investigate the demountability of bolted circular CFST column-base connections using the finite element method. The developed finite element models take into account the effects of material and geometric nonlinearities; the accuracy of proposed models is validated through comparison against independent experimental results. The mechanical performance of CFST column-base connections with both permanent and demountable design details are compared with the developed finite element models. Parametric studies are further carried out to examine the effects of design parameters on the behaviour of demountable circular CFST column-base connections. Moreover, the initial stiffness and moment capacity of such demountable connections are compared with the existing codes of practice. The comparison results indicate that an improved prediction method of the initial stiffness for these connections should be developed.

The goal of this paper is to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of concrete-filled tubular column to H-beam connection with external T stiffener through the elasto-plastic finite element method and to offer basic data for the design of T stiffener. For the accuracy, analysis results are compared with experimental results. It makes use of several stress and strain indices to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of connection. An alternative plan that decreases the stress concentration of beam flange to horizontal stiffener connection is proposed through the elasto-plastic finite element method.
This paper presents an experimental and analytical study on the behavior of concrete-filled tubular stub columns concentrically loaded in compression to fail. Total eleven specimens were tested and test parameters are the depth-to-thickness ratios of steel tube and the ratio of concrete cylinder strength-to-yield stress of steel tube. Depth-to-thickness ratios of steel tube between 20.22
Constructions of buildings downtown are increasing as much as ever with a strong demand. Top-Down Method is suitable for its advantage in minimizing its disturbance to the neighborhood. Pre-founded when applied to CFT Column on-site welded is required for splicing. To complement the welded built-up square composite Column was developed. Top-down process will be pouring concrete in accordance with a step-by-step process. Thus, Pre-founded Column and cover concrete to determine the stress condition. Therefore, Concrete filled steel square tubular columns encased with precast concrete were studied. Five Centrally loaded Columns were tested to investigate the axial load carrying capacity. we analyzed the strength and behavior of CET Column by Loading conditions and concrete strength, thickness of cover concrete through structure experiments.
It is well known that the ultimate compressive strength of concrete filled tubular stub-column is higher than that of the simplified evaluating value because of the confinement effect of infilled concrete. In this paper, It is compared the experimental results of other researchers with estimated ones by using the formulae. Finally, It is shown that the predicted equation is obtained by using the numerical analysis.
