In the evaluation method of KS on the activity factor of fly ash, same amount of cement should be replaced with fly ash. Therefore, contradictory effects on concrete strength exist, i. e. strength decease due to low content of cement and strength increase of strength due to filling-pore-function of fly ash. European Committee for Standardization (CEN) specifies the method 1 to 4. adding fly ash without reducing the content of cement, for the evaluation method on activity factor of fly ash. This study investigates the applicability of the method 2 of CEN to mix design of concrete. The followings are derived ; There is a key ratio of f)y ash mixing which enhances the incremental ratio of mixing water to improve fluidity of mortar. The incremental ratio of mixing water is maximized about 11% ratio of fly ash mixing. Compressive strength most slightly increases at that ratio of fly ash mixing. Activity factor of fly ash increases as water-cement ratio becomes low and contents of fly ash becomes high. Moreover, quality of fly ash and condition of mix design affect the applicable amount of fly ash and available range of water-cement ratio. However, this method has some problems for practical purpose because activity factors of fly ash for some cases are over 1.0. Further research should be conducted to develop more useful method of evaluating activity factor of fly ash.
Although the self-compacting concrete (SCC) offers several practical and economic benefits and quality improvement in concrete constructions, in comparison with conventionally vibrated concretes confronts with autogenously chemical and drying shrinkage which causes the formation of different cracks and creates different problems in concrete structures. Using different fibers in the mix design and implementation of fibrous concrete, the problem can be solved by connecting cracks and micro cracks together and postponing the propagation of them. In this study an experimental investigation using response surface methodology (RSM) based on full factorial design has been undertaken in order to model and evaluate the polypropylene fiber effect on the fibrous self-compacting concrete and curing time, fiber percentage and fiber amount have been considered as input variables. Compressive strength has been measured and calculated as the output response to achieve a mathematical relationship between input variables. To evaluate the proposed model analysis of variance at a confidence level of 95% has been applied and finally optimum compressive strength predicted. After analyzing the data, it was found that the presented mathematical model is in very good agreement with experimental results. The overall results of the experiments confirm the validity of the proposed model and this model can be used to predict the compressive strength of fibrous self-compacting concrete.
Concrete mix design is used as essential data for the quality of concrete, analysis of structures, and stable use of sustainable structures. However, since most of the formulation design is established based on the experience of experts, there is a lack of data to base it on. are suffering Accordingly, in this study, the purpose of this study is to build a predictive model to use the concrete mixing factor as basic data for calculation using the DNN technique. As for the data set for DNN model learning, OPC and ternary concrete data were collected according to the presence or absence of admixture, respectively, and the model was separated for OPC and ternary concrete, and training was carried out. In addition, by varying the number of hidden layers of the DNN model, the prediction performance was evaluated according to the model structure. The higher the number of hidden layers in the model, the higher the predictive performance for the prediction of the mixing elements except for the compressive strength factor set as the output value, and the ternary concrete model showed higher performance than the OPC. This is expected because the data set used when training the model also affected the training.
People started to replace natural aggregate with recycled aggregate for a number of years due to disposal problem and certain other potential benefits. Though there are number of drawbacks with use of recycled aggregates like lesser modulus of elasticity, low compressive strength, increase in shrinkage, there are results of earlier studies that use of chemical and mineral admixtures improves the strength and durability of recycled concrete. The use of recycled aggregate from construction and demolition wastes is showing prospective application in construction as alternative to natural aggregates. It conserves lot of natural resources and reduces the space required for the landfill disposal. In the present research work, the effect of recycled aggregate on strength and durability aspects of concrete is studied. Grade of concrete chosen for the present work is M50 (with a characteristic compressive strength of 50 MPa). The recycled aggregates were collected from demolished structure with 20 years of age. Natural Aggregate (NA) was replaced with Recycled Aggregate (RA) in different percentages such as 25, 50 and 100 to understand its effect. The experiments were conducted for different ages of concrete such as 7, 14, 28, 56 days to assess the compressive and tensile strength. Durability characteristics of recycled aggregate concrete were studied with Rapid chloride penetration test (as per ASTMC1202), sorptivity test and acid test to assess resistance against chloride ion penetration, capillary suction and chemical attack respectively. Mix design for 50 MPa gives around 35 MPa after replacing natural aggregate with recycled aggregate in concrete mix and the chloride penetration range also lies in moderate limit. Hence it is understood from the results that replacement of NA with RA is very much possible and will be ecofriendly.
High deformable concrete (HDC) elements have compressive strength rates equal to conventional concrete and have got a high compressive strain at about 20% to 50%. These types of concrete elements as prefabricated parts have an abundance of applications in the construction industry which is the most used in the construction of tunnels in squeezing grounds, tunnel passwords from fault zones or swelling soils as soft supports. HDC elements after reaching to compressive yield stress, in nonlinear behavior have hardening combined with increasing strain and compressive strength. The main aim of this laboratory and numerical research is to construct concrete elements with the above properties so the compressive stress-strain behavior of different concrete elements with four categories of mix designs have been discussed and finally one of them has been defined as HDC element mix design. Furthermore, two columns with and without implementing of HDC elements have been made and stress-strain curves of them have been investigated experimentally. An analysis model is presented for columns using finite element method adopted by ABAQUS. The results obtained from the ABAQUS finite element method are compared with experimental data. The main comparison is made for stress-strain curve. The stress-strain curves from the finite element method agree well with experimental results. The results show that the dimension of the HDC samples is significant in the stress-strain behavior. The use of the element greatly increases energy absorption and ductility.
Current research and development of high performance concrete, together with study of phenomena that are pertinent to impact resistance, have lead to a new generation of barriers with improved properties to resist impact loads. The paper reviews major properties and mechanisms that affect impact resistance of concrete barriers as per criteria that characterize the resistance. These criteria are the perforation limit, penetration depth and the amount of front and rear face damage. From the long-known, single strength parameter that used to represent the barriers' impact resistance, more of the concrete mix ingredients are now considered to be effective in determining it. It is shown that the size and hardness of the aggregates, use of steel fibers and micro-silica have different effects on performance under impact and on the resistance. Additional pertinent phenomena, such as the rate and size effects, confinement and local versus global response, are pointed out with their reference to possible future developments in the design of impact resisting concrete barriers.
As the weight of trucks increases, the need for concrete pavement also increases. Therefore, the addition of fly-ash may improve the properties of pavement concrete as well as recycle fly-ash. A full factorial experiment was performed using the primary variables, such as water-cement ratio, fly-ash substitution ratio, and maximum size of coarse aggregate, as a preliminary study for optimum mixture design for pavement concrete. The results of preliminary study indicates that the addition of fly-ash is the most important factor determining concrete strength, followed by the maximum size of coarse aggregate and water-cement ratio. It, also, shows the relative importance of fly-ash substitution ratio, compared to the water-cement ratio, and the interaction effects between the primary variables. Optimum mixture designs for pavement concrete incorporating fly-ash, that satisfied the target responses, were proposed in terms of fly-ash substitution ratio, water cement ratio and maximum size of coarse aggregate.
Large-scaling recycling of demolished concrete will contribute not only to the solution of a growing waste disposal problem. it will also help to conserve natural resoures of sand and gravel and to secure future supply of reasonly priced aggregates for builiding and other construction purposes within large urban areas. because recycled aggregate particles consist of substaintial amount of relatively soft cement paste component, it is less resistant to mechanical actions. With this view in mind, to obtain a reference data for the development of recycling system and to a basic data the guideline of recycled aggregate concrete construction and mix design, this study deals with the comparative analysis of the workability and engineering properties of recycled aggregate concrete according to the factors, such as blending ratio of recycled aggregate with the natural aggregate, addition of flyash, water cement ration.
This study is performed to evaluate the properties of ECO-permeable polymer concrete with blast furnace slag powder and stone dust. The unit weight is in the range of $1,821kg/m^3{\sim}1,955kg/m^3$, the unit weights of those concrete are decreased $15%{\sim}20.8%$ than that of the normal cement concrete. The highest strength is achieved by ECO-permeable polymer concrete filled blast furnace slag powder 50% and stone dust 50%, it is increased 36% by compressive strength, 119% by tensile strength and 217% by bending strength than that of the normal cement concrete, respectively. The coefficient of permeability is in the range of $5.6{\times}10^{-2}cm/s{\sim}8.1{\times}10^{-2}cm/s$, and it is largely dependent upon the mix design.
Because of occuring easily the crack, debond, lutting on asphalts pavement of bredge decks under traffic's heavy weigt load. We investigated the application of latex modified concrete to resurface and repaire bridge decks for preventing the above problems. Here, Using the ordinary portland cement and high early cement, We rested mix design, workability, compressive strength, adhesive power, drying shrinkage, carbonation, and economic estimation etc. We selected the condition of application to resurface and repaire bridge decks and detected high early cement is superior to ordinary portland cement in results of analyzing the application of the repairing bridge decks and economic estimations.
