Students' Views of Science

  • This study was to investigate high students' conceptions of acids and bases, and their views on learning science. Multiple sources of data were collected over six months with a participation of sit tenth graders and their science teacher. The transcripts of interviews and other data were examined with an eye toward students' conceptions of acids and bases, and their views of learning science. Students' views of science are displayed the representative pattern. Each pattern is represented with an episode. Students' views of learning have been found to reflect the transmissive models of science educational practice. Students accept passive and difficult-to-modify views of the learner roles that they should play in the science classroom. Students identified science classes as conservative places, despite the introduction of science literacy as a goal of Korean science education since 1980. Behaviorism remains the major influence in their expectation, design, and practice in school science. Moreover, 'transmission' remains the persistent and dominant classroom cultural dynamic for both teaching and learning of science.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the text relating to the environmental conservation and ecology among the text of the constitution of Korea and collect the domestic laws(40 statutes, 1 guide, 1 leading case) and the foreign laws(1 constitution, 34 statutes, 2 ordinances, 3 leading cases). To make the text of the collected domestic and foreign laws a comparative analysis of the conceptual principle, plan establishment and project operation, types, policy and allied projects, rights and duties, allowed and restricted acts, environmental impact assessment and administration procedure and system of the environmental conservation and ecology by items, it was considered to the mutual relation with lots of laws which are scattered with the various laws and studied to how to set the many foreign countries on their laws connected with the environmental conservation and ecology from the other department and carry out the advanced environmental works.

Analysis of Ecological Niche in 9th Graders' Genetic Concepts after Instruction (수업에 의해 변화되는 9학년 유전 개념의 생태 지위 분석)

  • In conceptual ecology, a concept does not exist independently but occupies an ecological niche in ecological environment. Among many biological concepts, genetic concepts are connected to several units including the genetics unit, and within the genetics unit the concepts of sub-areas are highly dependent on one another. For this reason, we analyzed conceptual diversity and conceptual proximity of genetic concepts through the ecological niche approach. For this purpose, we surveyed 995 9th graders. The areas covered in the survey were four genetic concepts: gene, chromosome, mitosis, and meiosis. The questionnaire presented biological concepts or terms related to each area, and the respondent marked the relevance between the presented biological concepts or terms and each area on a scale of 1~30 points. With 9th grade students, we analyzed the change of genetic concepts through class by the ecological niche approach. Through class, the total number of concepts increased in all of the areas, and the increase was smallest in the area of meiosis followed by mitosis, chromosome and gene. Relative density decreased with increases in the number of concepts. The conceptual diversity index also increased through class in all of the areas, and the increase was smallest in the area of meiosis followed by mitosis, chromosome and gene. In addition, difference in the relative density of concepts was reduced after class, and difference in the score of relevance was also reduced and consequently similarity among concepts increased. From these results were drawn conclusions as follows: First, through class, the conceptual diversity of genetic concepts increased. Second, through class, the conceptual proximity of genetic concepts increased.

Research on Family Life Education Programs in Korea: A Content Analysis of Themes and Theories

  • A conceptual framework, based on a curriculum model of family life education content, and on a schema for analyzing explicit use of theory, was developed to discern the substantive themes of programs and the role of theories in publications on programs for families in the Korean family studies literature. Seventy two journal articles published between 1990 and 2002 were analyzed. The results revealed that the Korean family life education programs dealt with the breadth of topics, but most particularly internal family dynamics and interpersonal relationships, and utilized theoretical concepts as input and output in a different level: explicit, implicit, or no use of theories. Implications for future research and practice in Korean family life education are discussed, including gaps in the substantive foci of programs, and aligning programs more closely with theory.

The Effects of Adult Women's Innate Innovativeness on Involvement and Fashion Innovativeness (성인여성의 내재적 혁신성이 관여와 유행혁신성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aimed to investigate the effects of innate innovativeness of young female adults on involvement and fashion innovativeness. To explain conceptual structure of adult women's fashion innovativeness, 4 dimensions of innate innovativeness were adopted as explanatory variables, and fashion involvement and clothing involvement were included as mediating variables. Date collecting using written survey instrument yielded 801 complete responses from female consumers aged between 20 and 39. Factor analysis on innate innovativeness resulted in 4 dimensional structures of innate innovativeness for the sample: uniqueness seeking, risk taking, newness seeking and dramatic stimulus seeking. All of these significantly and directly affected fashion innovativeness, however, uniqueness seeking, newness seeking and dramatic stimulus seeking except risk taking significantly and indirectly affected fashion innovativeness through fashion involvement and clothing involvement.

  • This study explicitly identifies the main values that rural welfare recipients reveal when they talk about their experiences with welfare and welfare reform. An inductive analysis of values is conducted using interview data from 49 current and former recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) residing in the states of Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, and New York. Seven main values that emerge from the data are self-esteem, autonomy, uniqueness, advancement, security, independence, and fairness.   • The purpose of this study was to explore the structure and content of chemistry teacher's explanations from the perspective of 'persuasion'. Especially, this study was to explore how the argument structure and the conceptual change constructs in chemistry teachers' explanations were established and interacted. Data were collected from chemistryI classes considering the gas unit which includes kinetic theory of gas, Graham's law, Boyle's law, and Charles' law. The classes were vediotaped and transcribed. The transcriptions were analyzed with Toulmin's argument frame and the two constructs of conceptual change model; the conceptual ecology and the status of a conception to interpret the persuasive structure and content of the teacher's explanations. As the results of this study, four explanatory discourses which show various persuasive explanations in chemistry classes. Based on this results, discussion and implications for effective teachers' explanations in chemistry classes were presented.

A Feasibility Analysis of a Low Noise and Dust Suction Type Pavement Cutter (저소음·분진회수형 도로절단기 개발의 타당성 분석)

  • A large amount of fine dust is generated during the process of pavement cutting. Consequently, reducing the amount of fine dust generated during pavement cutting is crucial for the overall management of fine dust. Based on this premise, in this study, a conceptual model is proposed for a device that can be employed for recovering scattered dust generated at the site of pavement cutting. The economic feasibility associated with the incorporation of the proposed model was analyzed. Results obtained from the economic feasibility analysis of the proposed conceptual model indicate that the benefit ratio is 2.96, which is significantly higher than 1. The rate of return is found to be 62.78%, which significantly exceeds the minimum expected rate of return (i.e., 10%), as established on the basis of interviews conducted with companies that implement pavement cutting. Furthermore, the break-even point is found to be at approximately 21.6 months. Hence, the proposed pavement cutter, which features dust suction and a low noise level, is economically feasible.

  • The purpose of this review is to establish a groundwork for building a more comprehensive conceptual framework within which various aspects of sibling relations and factor related to sibling behaviors con be explained and integrated. Descriptions of the trends and shifts in sibling studies are made in terms of their themes, variables, basic perceptions and general approaches, and analyzes of current state of sibling researches are made with relation to the conceptual aspects of the studies, namely, their standpoints on the issues of sibling variations, the sources of variations, and basic units of analysis, their reliance or emphasis on different methods, and their interests in the mediation processes. It is recognized that research variables have been successively differentiated and used in diversified manners and family ecology and systems theory viewpoints have been incorporated into the understanding of sibling relations. A triad in its full meaning, rather than a dyad or a partial trial, is proposed as a unit of analysis in order for the researchers to be able to examine and describe the true interactional aspects of family relations involving sibling relations. The concepts of coexistence and interaction are proposed as key concepts os that the inconsistencies in findings, differing viewpoints, contradicting conceptions , and contrasting approaches can be interpreted and integrated into a unified system of theories on siblings. The coexistence of similarities and differences in reality. the inevitability of interaction between individual variables and environmental variables and between within-family environmental factors and our-of-family environmental factors, and the need for the joint use of intrafamilial and extrafamilial approach are acknowledged. Attention is also drawn to the mechanism characteristics and the directionality of the mediating processes of mediating variables between a variable and its effects.

A hierarchical model of self-determined motivation for thrift shopping behavior

  • A consumer is an individual entity with various motivations. This study is intended to incorporate a hierarchical structure of motivation to understand self-determined motivation for purchasing secondhand merchandise at thrift stores. A conceptual model adopted from Cadwallader et al. (2010)'s comprehensive model of motivation used in a marketing context was developed to investigate motivational process in secondhand merchandise shopping. The conceptual model includes the three levels of motivational structure-the global, contextual (environmental concern and frugality), and situational motivation. A series of the causal relationships among the three levels of self-determined motivations and buying intention to shop at thrift stores were hypothesized. A total of 219 respondents from two different northeastern state universities in the U.S. completed a self-administered survey. The results indicated that secondhand merchandise shopping is well explained in the hierarchical structure of self-determined motivation where the global motivation had a positive impact on the contextual motivations regarding environmental concern and frugality. Of the two contextual motivations, only environmental concern had a positive impact on situational motivation for shopping at thrift stores. Finally, the situational motivation positively influenced the intention to shop at thrift stores. The results of this model suggest that the hierarchical structure of self-determined motivation would be a very useful framework to understand consumer behavior for apparel shopping. Also, further research can be done to identify other contextual motivational factors to understand consumer motivation for shopping at thrift stores.
