$^{210}Pb$ dating was conducted to examine the influence of land use changes in the forest catchment on lake sedimentation. The Kushiro River, into which Lake Takkobu drains under regular flow conditions, contributed to an increased sedimentation rate in sampling point at the lake outflow because turbid water from the Kushiro River flows back into Lake Takkobu during floods. The elevated sediment flux from the catchment dilutes the $^{210}Pb$ concentration in sampling points at the inflow of the Takkobu River and the lake outflow, which causes fluctuations in the $^{210}Pb$ concentrations in sediment cores. The $^{210}Pb$ dating was estimated using the CRS (Constant rate of Supply) model. The dates by the CRS model in Lake Takkobu profiles were in good agreement with the dates by $^{137}Cs$. Sedimentation rates reconstructed for the past 100-150 years suggested that sedimentation rates increased drastically following land use changes. While a natural sedimentation rate of $0.01-0.03g/cm^2/year$ is observed until the 1880s, whereas lake sedimentation accelerated to $0.03-0.09g/cm^2/year$ following land use changes such as deforestation and channelization, between the 1880s and 1940s. In particular, the sedimentation rates have been associated with deforestation, channelization, agricultural development and road construction, since the 1980s, and these rates were about 9-28 times higher than those under natural conditions, leading to accelerated lake shallowing.
Cimetidine is a histamine $H_2-receptor$ antagonist, used for the treatment of endoscopically or radiographically comfirmed duodenal ulcer, pathologic GI hypersecretory conditions, and active, benign and gastric ulcer. Simple method for determining cimetidine in human plasma has been developed and validated. The analytical procedure for cimetidine showed a linear relationship in the concentration ranges from $0.05\;to\;5\;{\mu}g/ml$. Coefficient of variance (CV, %) for intraday and interday validation and relative error (RE, %) were less than ${\pm}15%$. Based on this analytical method, the bioequivalence of two cimetidine 400 mg tablets, reference (Tagamet 400 mg) and test drug (Sinil CIMETIDINE 400 mg) was evaluated according to the guidelines set by the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). Release of cimetidine from the tablets in vitro was tested using KP VIII Apparatus II with various dissolution media (pH 1.2, 4.0, 6.8 buffer solutions and water). Twenty-four healthy volunteers, $21.38{\pm}1.86$ years in age and $68.71{\pm}8.68\;kg$ in body weight, were divided into two groups and a randomized $2{\times}2$ cross-over study was performed. After oral administration of a tablet containing 400 mg of cimetidine, blood samples were taken at predetermined time intervals and concentrations of cimetidine in plasma were determined using HPLC equipped with UV detector. The dissolution profiles of the two tablet formulations were very similar at all dissolution media. In addition, pharmacokinetic parameters such as $AUC_t$ and $C_{max}$ were calculated and ANOVA was employed for the statistical analysis of parameters. The results were revealed that the differences in $AUC_t$ and $C_{max}$ between the two tablets were 4.17 % and 0.97% respectively. At 90% confidence intervals, the differences in these parameters were also within ${\pm}20%$. All of the above mentioned parameters have met the criteria of KFDA guidelines for bioequivalence, indicating that the test drug tablet (Sinil CIMETIDINE tablet) is bioequivalent to Tagamet 400 mg tablet.
Ion exchange equilibria in bulk and rhizosphere soil collected from peach seedlings were studied to find exchange equations that could be used in chromatographic models dealing with movement and distribution of fertilizer ammonium and exchangeable cations in soil profiles. Soil samples were equilibrated with mixtures of $NH_4Cl$, KCI, and $CaCl_2$ solutions and then extracted with $Sr(NO_3)_2$ solution to determine exchangeable cation compositions at equilibrium. Exchange data were fitted to Vanselow's, Gapon's, and Kerr's equations, but those formulations did not adequately describe the equilibria. An empirical equation of the form : ${\frac{\alpha_i^m}{a_j^n}}=K{\frac{(iX)^{mPi}}{(jX)^{nPj}}}$ which has an exponent on each of the exchangeable cation concentrations could describe the equilibria very well over the range of treatments. In this equation ${\alpha}^i$ and ${\alpha}^j$ are activities of cation i and j with valences m and n respectively. (iX) and (jX) are concentrations of exchangeable cations. Mole or equivalent fractions can be considered as the exchangeable ion concentration unit. Arbitrary constants $P_i$ and $P_j$, and distribution coefficient K can be found with multiple regression for the logarithmic form of the equation.

As part of study on the microbial food web in the southern Jeju Island of Korea, Planktonic tintinnids and aloricate oligotrichs were investigated from July 1998 to June 2000 to understand seasonal variation and water mass indication with environmental factors. 39 species of tintinnids were identified representing 1 order, 11 families, 20 genera. Tintinnid abundance ranged from 100 to 5,400 cells.1$^{-1}$ (mean 314 cells.1$^{-1}$ ), and oceanic species were mainly dominant in fall and winter season, while neritic species were a little pre- dominant in spring and summer season. 15 species of aloricate oligotrichs were identified representing 1 order, 5 families, 7 genera, and many belonged to genus Strombidium which was most abundant and most frequently occurred in many months. Abundance of aloricate oligotrichs ranged from 140 to 21,000 cells.1$^{-1}$ (mean 2,356 cells.1$^{-1}$ ). Species diversity and standing crops of tintinnids were quite different according to seasons, but few seasonal variations were detected in aloricate oligotrichs. In terms of water mass indication tintinnids represented obvious characteristics which were affected by marine environmental factors, but alor- icate oligotrichs had no such apparent indication as tintinnids. Ciliates were more abundant and more diverse in inshore than in offshore station. Total carbon biomass of ciliates ranged from 0.01 to 136.06 $\mu\textrm{g}$C.1$^{-1}$ (mean 5.01 $\mu\textrm{g}$C.1$^{-1}$ ). The carbon biomass, however, did not coincided with seasonal variations of abun- dance Vertical profiles of mean abundance of both tintinnids and aloricate oligotrichs were similar, and had same trend as those of mean chlorophyll o concentration. It suggests that phytoplankton and ciliates reflected the prey-predator relationship in the study area.
The optimum condition for phenolics contents extraction from purple sweet potato was 12 hrs. in 50% ethanol. The electron donating scavenging activities (DPPH), ABTS radical cation decolorization (ABTS) and antioxidant protection factor (PF) of Jami, Yeonjami and Shinjami were higher than general sweet potato, and thiobarbituric acid reaction substance (TBARs) was below 30%. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli on skin were each 5,000 and 2,500 ppm in all purple sweet potatoes, and MIC of Jami was the lowest as 2,500 ppm against Staphlococcus epidermidis. The whitening (tyrosinase inhibitory) activity of purple sweet potatoes was the highest as 62.5% and 48.7% in Jami water and ethanol extracts. The anti-inflammation (hyaluronidase inhibitory) activity of purple sweet potatoes was the highest as 25.3% and 94.4% in Jami water and ethanol extracts. The safety of cosmetic with Jam; extracts was assessed by various safety profiles. pH and viscosity change of essence for 90 days was not detected. Cosmetic was stable to temperature and light for 90 days. The result to measure changes of skin color and pore size of the skin was that an aged skin was more effective than young skin.

Objective: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the effect of dietary essential oils (EOs) on productive performance, nutrient digestibility, and serum metabolite profiles of broiler chickens and to compare their effectiveness as growth-promoting additives against antibiotics. Methods: Peer-reviewed articles were retrieved from Web of Science, Science Direct, PubMed, and Google scholar and selected based on pre-determined criteria. A total of 41 articles containing 55 experiments with 163 treatment units were eligible for analyses. Data were subjected to a meta-analysis based on mixed model methodology considering the doses of EOs as fixed effects and the different studies as random effects. Results: Results showed a linear increase (p<0.001) on body weight gain (BWG) where Antibiotics (FCR) and average daily feed intake decreased (p<0.001) linearly with an increasing dose of EOs. Positive effects were observed on the increased (p<0.01) digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, and cecal Lactobacillus while Escherichia coli (E. coli) population in the cecum decreased (p<0.001) linearly. There was a quadratic effect on the weight of gizzard (p<0.01), spleen (p<0.05), bursa of fabricius (p<0.001), and liver (p<0.10) while carcass, abdominal fat, and pancreas increased (p<0.01) linearly. The dose of EOs linearly increased high density lipoprotein, glucose, protein, and globulin concentrations (p<0.01). In comparison to control and antibiotics, all type of EOs significantly reduced (p<0.001) FCR and tended to increase (p<0.1) BWG and final body weight. Cinnamaldehyde-compound was the only EOs type showing a tendency to increase (p<0.1) carcass weight, albumin, and protein of serum metabolites while this EOs together with EOs-Blend 1 decreased (p<0.01) E. coli population. Low density lipoprotein concentration decreased (p<0.05) with antibiotics and carvacrol-based compound when compared to the control group. Conclusion: This evidence confirms that EOs are suitable to be used as growth promoters and their economical benefit appears to be promising.
Recently, the miniaturization and digitalization for the inspection devices of point-of-care testing (POCT) are rapidly evolving. In the urine test, a lot of researches on index paper technology are being conducted because people can be self-diagnosed through visual color comparison using a urine test paper, Dipsick. The purpose of this study is to analyze the RGB values from the color changes on Dipstick Pad, which isused for urine test, using a smartphone camera. To this end, the primary, analytes in urine wasdiabetes-related parameters such as glucose, ketone body and pH, which is the most frequently tested elements, and we pursuited to quantify the changes in dipstick color caused from artificial urine containing different ranges of sugar, ketone body, and pH. In this experiment, changes in RGB values under bright and dark illuminances were compared, and changes in RGB value were monitored as a function of concentration of analytes under the ambient illumination of laboratory. As a result, color separation at the bright luminance region was good, but it did not appearat the low luminance region, and the changed profiles in RGB value under different illuminances was suggested to correct the problem of the color separation algorithm.
This study investigated the impact of cellulase treatment on the extraction yield of potato starch (PS), and compared the physicochemical properties of PS by conventional (CSE) and enzymatic (ESE) starch extraction. In ESE, the PS extraction yield was predominantly influenced by reaction temperature, time and their interaction, compared to the cellulase concentration. When potatoes were treated for 8 h at $40^{\circ}C$ with 1.5% cellulase, the PS extraction yield was about 3.4-fold higher than that by CSE. Compared to CSE-PS, ESE-PS showed lower total starch contents and higher amylose contents, resulting in lower swelling factors and distorted pasting viscosity profiles accompanied by absence of peak and breakdown viscosities. However, ESE did not affect the gelatinization characteristics of PS. Overall results suggested that ESE can provide the highest yield of PS, and ESE-PS can be a potential starch source for extending the utilization of PS in food industries.
This study aimed to optimize gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) production by employing five strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) that were capable of high cell growth and GABA production using a modified synthetic medium. GABA production in the strains was qualitatively confirmed via detection of colored spots using thin layer chromatography. Lactobacillus plantarum SGL058 and Lactococcus lactis SGL027 were selected as the suitable strains for GABA production. The conditions of the carbon and nitrogen sources were determined as 5 g/l glucose (L. plantarum SGL058), 5 g/l lactose (L. lactis SGL027), 10 g/l yeast extract (L. plantarum SGL058), and 20 g/l yeast extract (L. lactis SGL027) for GABA production. The cell growth, monitored by optical density at 600 nm, was 5.93 for L. plantarum SGL058. This value was higher than the 3.04 produced by L. lactis SGL027 at 36 h using a 5-L fermenter. The highest concentration of GABA produced was 546.7 ㎍/ml by L. plantarum SGL058 and 404.6 ㎍/ml by L. lactis SGL027, representing a GABA conversion efficiency of (%, w/w) of 4.0% and 3.4%, respectively. The fermentation profiles of L. plantarum SGL058 and L. lactis SGL027 provide a basis for the utilization of LAB in GABA production using a basal synthetic medium.
'Angelica' is one of the most traditionally consumed medicinal herbs around Northeast Asia including Korea for treatments of various diseases or health care purposes like hematopoiesis, blood circulation for women, sedative, analgesic, and a tonic medicine etc. Angelica gigas Nakai, a Korean native species of Angelica, is clearly different from the others in containing a high concentration of active ingredients like pyranocoumarines including decursin, decursinol, and decursinol angelate. These compounds have various kinds of positive effects such as anti-tumor activity including the precaution of neutropenia occurred during anticancer drug administration, improvements of metabolic disorders, menstrual irregularity, impairment of renal function, respiration improvement, cognition-enhancement, anti-inflammatory effect, anti-oxidative effect, enhancing fertility and so forth. Thus it implies incredible potentialities in future development for foods and drugs. However, certain purity-related qualities and/or overdose in food products can cause side effects like toxicities; therefore, their safety profiles should also be considered. This review focuses on the positive and negative effects of three pyranocoumarines in Angelica gigas Nakai and some possibilities and considerations for future food and drug products development.
