  • We present a retrieval method to obtain dust backscatter coefficient from the mixed Asian dust and pollutant layer. In the present study, vertically resolved quartz (silicon dioxide, silica) concentration was calculated using Raman scattering signals from quartz at 546 nm. Dust concentration was obtained based on typical mass percentage of quartz in Asian dust. The highest value of dust concentration at 3.7 km in March 21, 2010 was 22.3 and 10.9 ${\mu}gm^{-3}$ according to the quartz percentage in Asian dust as 65 and 30% based on literature survey, respectively. OPAC (Optical Properties of Aerosol and Clouds) simulations were conducted to calculate dust backscatter coefficient. The retrieved dust concentration was used as an input parameter for the OPAC calculations. Utilization of quartz Raman channel in Lidar measurements is considered useful for distinguishing optical properties of dust and nondust aerosol in the mixing state of Asian dust.

  • Tubular ultrafiltration membranes were used to investigated mass transfer characteristics of waste cheese whey. The effects of bulk concentration and flow velocity on permeat flux, mass transfer coefficient and apparent rejection coefficient were measured. Mass transfer coefficient was increased linearly with increasing flow velocity, and following relationship between mass transfer coefficient(k) and linear velocity(u) was obtained. $k=0.87{\times}10^{-5}u^{1-1}$ It is interjecting to note that plots for all linear velocity tend to converge to the same point for zero permeating flux, and the maximum bulk concentration that can be achieved with cheese whey extracts was 38(w/v %). In general, membrane rejection coefficient increased with increasing flow velocity and the rejection coefficients of cheese whey solution and that of lactose in cheese whey solution were obtained $0.40{\sim}0.65$, $0.15{\sim}0.30$, respectively.

  • The ejector type microbubble generator, which is the method to supply air to water by using cavitation in the nozzle, does not require any air supplier so it is an effective and economical. Also, the distribution of the size of bubbles is diverse. Especially, the size of bubbles is smaller than the bubbles from a conventional air diffuser and bigger than the bubbles from a pressurized dissolution type microbubble generator so it could be applied to the aeration tank for wastewater treatment. However, the performance of the ejector type microbubble generator was affected by hydraulic pressure and MLSS(Mixed Liquor Suspended Solid) concentration so many factors should be considered to apply the generator to aeration tank. Therefore, this study was performed to verify effects of hydraulic pressure and MLSS concentration on oxygen transfer of the ejector type microbubble generator. In the tests, the quantity of sucked air in the nozzle, dissolved oxygen(DO) concentration, oxygen uptake rate(OUR), oxygen transfer coefficient were measured and calculated by using experimental results. In case of the MLSS, the experiments were performed in the condition of MLSS concentration of 0, 2,000, 4,000, 8,000 mg/L. The hydraulic pressure was considered up to $2.0mH_2O$. In the results of experiments, oxygen transfer coefficient was decreased with the increase of MLSS concentration and hydraulic pressure due to the increased viscosity and density of wastewater and decreased air flow rate. Also, by using statistical analysis, when the ejector type microbubble generator was used to supply air to wasterwater, the model equation of DO concentration was suggested to predict DO concentration in wastewater.

  • A novel methodology on the calculations of osmotic pressure and gradient diffusion coefficient has been provided ill the present study, by applying a succinct numerical analysis on the experimental results. Although both the osmotic pressure and the gradient diffusion coefficient represent a fundamental characteristic in related membrane filtrations such as microfiltration and ultrafiltration, neither theoretical analysis nor experiments can readily determine them. The osmotic pressure of colloidal suspension has been successfully determined from a relationship between the data of the time-dependent permeate flux, their numerical accumulations, and their numerical derivatives. It is obvious that the osmotic pressure is gradually increased, as the particle concentration increases. The thermodynamic coefficient was calculated from the numerical differentiation of the correlation equation of osmotic pressure, and the hydrodynamic coefficient was evaluated from the previously developed relation for an ordered system. Finally, the estimated gradient diffusion coefficient, which entirely depends on the particle concentration, was compared to the previous results obtained from the statistical mechanical simulations.

  • The leakage conduction and critical voltage characteristic of ZnO ceramic were investigated as a function of $Sb_2O_3$ concentration. Leakage conduction in the ohmic region increased with increasing $Sb_2O_3$ concentration and was attributed to the potential barrier height. The nonlinear coefficient increased with an increasing amount of $Sb_2O_3$. It was found that increases in the apparent critical voltages were associated with the lowered donor concentration in the grain boundary of between two ZnO grains. And the decrease of donor concentration on doping with $Sb_2O_3$ additive was attributed to the lowered capacitance in the grain boundary layer.

  • The size and concentration of wear debris in lubricating oil often reveal the operating condition of the rotating machinery. To evaluate the possible application of light attenuation measurement for the estimation of wear debris concentration in the lubricating oil, the light transmittance through the lubricating oil cell contaminated with various concentrations of diatomire particles was measured, the attenuation coefficient was estimated from the transmittance measurement and the coefficients were compared with those obtained from the scattering theory. The comparision showed good agreements between them. It is also noted that the experimentally determined attenuation coefficient showed almost linear relation with particle weight coucentrations for the concentrations within the range of 2000 ppm. For the case of 0 ppm weight concentration of diatomire particles in the lubricating oil cell, the thickness of the cell required to give $100 \muW$ light attenuation is 7.75 mm. This result indicates that the light attenuation method will be one of the possible candidates of machine failure diagnostic sensors for the estimation of wear debris concentration in the lubricating oil.

  • A tank model in conjunction with Kalman filter is developed for prediction of sediment yield from an upland watershed in Northwestern Mississippi. The state vector of the system model represents the parameters of the tank model. The initial values of the state vector were estimated by trial and error. The sediment yield of each tank is computed by multiplying the total sediment yield by the sediment yield coefficient. The sediment concentration of the first tank is computed from its storage and the sediment concentration distribution(SCD); the sediment concentration of the next lower tank is obtained by its storage and the sediment infiltration of the upper tank; and so on. The sediment yield computed by the tank model using Kalman filter was in good agreement with the observed sediment yield and was more accurate than the sediment yield computed by the tank model.

  • Through shallow trench isolation (STI) chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) tests, we investigated the dependence of pad surface temperature on the abrasive and additive concentrations in ceria slurry under varying pressure using blanket film wafers. The pad surface temperature after CMP increased with the abrasive concentration and decreased with the additive concentration in slurries for the constant down pressure. A possible mechanism is that the additive adsorbed on the film surfaces during polishing decreases the friction coefficient, hence the pad surface temperature gets lower with increasing the additive concentration. This difference in temperature was more remarkable for the higher concentration of abrasives. In addition, in-situ measurement of spindle motor was carried out during oxide and nitride polishing. The averaged motor current for oxide film was higher than that for nitride film, meaning the higher friction coefficient.

  • The time of the onset of double-diffusive convection in time-dependent, nonlinear concentration fields is investigated theoretically. The initially quiescent horizontal fluid layer with a uniform temperature gradient experiences a sudden concentration change from below, but its stable thermal stratification affects concentration effects in such way to invoke convective motion. The related stability analysis, including Soret effect, is conducted on the basis of the propagation theory. Under the linear stability theory the concentration penetration depth is used as a length scaling factor, and the similarity transform for the linearized perturbation equations. The newlly obtained stability equations are solved numerically. The resulting critical time to mark the onset of regular cells are obtained as a function of the thermal Rayleigh number, the solute Rayleigh number, and the Soret effect coefficient. For a certain value of the Soret effect coefficient, the stable thermal gradient promote double-diffusive convective motion.
