  • This paper presents the root cause failure analysis of the circulating water pump in the 560 MW thermal power plant. A fractured austenitic stainless-steel shaft operated for 24 years was examined. Fracture morphology was investigated by micro and macro-fractographic analysis. The metallurgical analyses including chemical analysis, metallography and hardness testing were performed. The analysis reveals that the pump shaft was fractured due to the reverse bending load with combination of rotating bending load. Corrective actions for plant operator was recommended based on the analysis.

  • Nowadays, the bleaching techniques of thermomechanical pulp(TMP) are fast developing on the strength of some benefits, mainly on low production cost and good fiber property. In this study, the optimum concentration of bleaching chemicals and the environmental load of bleaching wastes were considered to improve the bleaching efficiency of thermomechanical pulp using Korean redpine(Pinus densiflora) under the peroxide-based bleaching system. The optical property of TMP after bleaching was planned to use higher grade of paper, like printing & writting paper, not general newspaper. The concentration of bleaching chemicals, NaOH, $Na_2SiO_3$ and EDTA, in hydrogen peroxide bleaching system, on the basis of O.D. pulp was closely influenced on the improvement of TMP brightness. Final target of bleaching efficiency was set up to above 76%-ISO brightness. The optimal target brightness of Korean redpine TMP was reached to 76.45%-ISO under the conditions of $H_2O_2$ 7% with NaOH 2.20%, $Na_2SiO_3$ 0.63% and EDTA 0.02%. The concentration of NaOH, $Na_2SiO_3$ and EDTA was correlated functional to the residual peroxide content of wastewater, pH value and electric conductivity of TMP fibers after bleaching treatment. The optimal bleaching conditions by controlling the addition amount of chemicals were positively contributed to the brightness stabilization and environmental load of TMP.

  • One of the most important factors that cause eutrophication is nutrient materials containing nitrogen and phosphorus which stem from excreation of terrestial sources and release from sediment. Therefore, to improve water quality, the reduction of these nutrients loads should be indispensible. At this study, the three-dimensional numerical hydrodynamic and ecosystem model, which was developed by Institute for Resources and Environment of Japan, were applied to analyze the processes affecting the eutrophication. The residual currents, which were obtained by integrating the simulated tidal currents over 1 tidal cycle, showed the presence of a typical counterclockwise eddies between Gyewha and Garyuk island. Density driven currents were generated westward at surface and eastward at the bottom in Saemankeum area where the fresh waters are flowing into, The ecosystem model was calibrated with the data surveyed in the field of the study area in annual average. The simulated results were fairly good coincided with the observed values within relative error of $30\%$. The simulations of DIN and DIP concentrations were performed using ecosystem model under the conditions of $40\~100\%$ pollution load reductions from pollution sources. In study area, concentration of DIN and DIP were reduced to $59\%$ and $28\%$ in case of the $80\%$ reduction of the input loads from fresh water respectively. But pollution loads from sediment had hardly affected DIN and DIP concentration, The $95\%$ input load abatement is necessary to meet the DIN and DIP concentration of second grade of ocean water quality criteria.

  • In this paper, a dynamic model describing the 2 phase effect on the gas diffusion layer depending on load change of a fuel cell stack was developed to examine the effects of liquid water in fuel cell cathode gas diffusion layer on the fuel cell performance. For the developed model, 2 phase effect on the performance of a fuel cell stack depending on the load changes, concentration distribution of water vapor and oxygen inside a gas diffusion layer, the effect of the thickness and porosity of the gas diffusion layer on the fuel cell stack voltage were examined. As a result, a fuel cell stack voltage for the 2 phase model within the scope of the research become lower than that for the 1 phase model regardless of the load. Although oxygen molar concentration for the gas diffusion layer adjacent to the catalyst layer was the lowest, water vapor concentration is the highest. In addition, as thickness and porosity of the gas diffusion layer increased and decreased, respectively, the fuel cell stack voltage decreased.

  • With external air pollution forcing many people indoors, new methods of facilitating healthier indoor life are necessary. This study, therefore, investigates the effects of indoor oxygen concentration and respiration methods on biosignals and cognitive ability. The study included twenty healthy subjects who inhaled air through a mask from a gas delivery system. All subjects were asked to perform three types of breathing (nasal, oral, and oral breathing with high oxygenation) and respond to cognitive stimuli (rest close eye, rest open eye, 1-back and 2-back working memory tasks). The changes in cognitive load according to respiration were analyzed by measuring response time, accuracy, and biosignals to stimuli. The result showed that, in all three respirations, heart rate significantly increased with the increase in cognitive load. Also, in oral respiration, the airway respiration rate significantly increased according to the increase in cognitive load. The change appeared to compensate for insufficient oxygen supply in oral respiration during cognitive activity. Conversely, there was no significant change in airway respiration rate during oral respiration with a high concentration oxygen supply as in nasal respiration. This result suggests that a high concentration oxygen supply might play a role in compensating for insufficient oxygen concentration or inefficient oxygen inhalation, such as oral respiration. Based on the results of this study, a follow-up study is necessary to determine the impact of changes in the autonomic nervous system, such as stress and emotions, to find out more precise and comprehensive effects of oxygen concentration and breathing type.

  • The objective of this study is to obtain adequate intercepting flow during wet weather conditions in combined sewer system. Two study sites are selected under considering different population density, one is developed area with heavy urbanization. Another is recently developing area. In the analysis of field investigation, SS was most significant in initial flushing effects compared with other factors and showed the result with the order of COD, TP, TN. As compared with event mean concentration(EMC) of runoff, BOD, TN and TP showed high concentrations in wide area with relatively large population density. It is by the reason that much pollution load was discharged to receiving water from urbanized area during wet period. According to results of storm-water modeling, 53% of total COD and 52% of total SS pollution load were discharged to receiving water by overflow than intercepting capacity in middle population density site. Also, in the urbanized area, pollution load was discharged to receiving water by 49% of total COD and 77% of total SS. These results can be applied to setup for pollution load flow(budget) generation, collection, treatment and discharging in order to obtain adequate intercepting flow.

  • Chloride corrosion has become the main factor of reducing the service life of reinforced concrete structures. The object of this paper is to propose a theoretical model that predicts the service life of chloride-corrosive concrete under fatigue load. In the process of modeling, the concrete is divided into two parts, microcrack and matrix. Taking the variation of mcirocrack area caused by fatigue load into account, an equation of chloride diffusion coefficient under fatigue load is established, and then the predictive model is developed based on Fick's second law. This model has an analytic solution and is reasonable in comparison to previous studies. Finally, some factors (chloride diffusion coefficient, surface chloride concentration and fatigue parameter) are analyzed to further investigate this model. The results indicate: the time to pit-to-crack transition and time to crack growth should not be neglected when predicting service life of concrete in strong corrosive condition; the type of fatigue loads also has a great impact on lifetime of concrete. In generally, this model is convenient to predict service life of chloride-corrosive concrete with different water to cement ratio, under different corrosive condition and under different types of fatigue load.

  • An ion selective microelectrode (ISME) was fabricated to measure concentrations of ammonium (${NH_4}^+$-N) and nitrate (${NO_3}^-$-N) according to the depth of nitrifying biofilm. The limits of detectability and validity of results were investigated to evaluate the ISME. The electromotive force (EMF) was directly proportional to the ion concentration, and average detection limits of ${NH_4}^+$ and ${NO_3}^-$ ISME were $10^{-5.14}$ and $10^{-5.18}$ M, respectively. The concentrations of ${NH_4}^+ $-N and ${NO_3}^-$-N in various depths on the nitrifying biofilm were measured by the ISME. When a modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) process was operated at an HRT of 6 h, concentration gradients of ${NH_4}^+$-N in the bulk solution and biofilm at depths of $100\;{\mu}m$ decreased by $70\;{\mu}M$, while ${NO_3}^-$-N increased by $101\;{\mu}M$ and remained constant thereafter. At an HRT of 4 h, concentration gradients of ${NH_4}^+$-N at depths of $500\;{\mu}m$ decreased by $160\;{\mu}M$ and ${NO_3}^-$-N increased by $162;{\mu}M$ and remained constant thereafter. As HRT decreased, the concentration gradients of ${NH_4}^+$-N and ${NO_3}^-$-N between bulk solution and biofilm was higher due to the increase of nitrogen load. Also, the concentration gradients of the ${NH_4}^+$-N and ${NO_3}^-$-N of biofilm in the second aerobic tank were lower than those of the first aerobic tank, suggesting differences of nitrogen load and concentrations of DO between the first and second aerobic tank.

  • Prediction of turbidity due to fine-grained bed material load under wave action is critical to any assessment of anthropogenic impart on the coastal or lacustrine environment Waves tend to loosen mud deposits and generate steep suspension concentration gradients, such that the sediment load near the bottom is typically orders of magnitude higher than that near the surface. In a physically realistic but simplified manner, a simple mass conservation principle has been used to simulate the evolution of fine sediment concentration profiles and corresponding erodible bed depths under progressive, nonbreaking wave action over mud deposits. Prior field observations support the simulated trends. which reveal the genesis of a near-bed. high concentration fluidized mud layer coupled with very low surficial sediment concentrations. It is concluded that estimation of the depth of bottom erosion requires an understanding of mud dynamics and competent in situ sediment concentration profiling. Measurement of sediment concentration at the surface alone, without regard to the near-bed zone, can lead to gross underestimation of the erodible bed depth.
