True Sedimentation and Particle Packing Rearrangement during Liquid Phase Sintering

  • When an alloy such as Ni-W is liquid phase sintered, heavy solid W particles sedimentate to the bottom of the container, provided that their volume fraction is less than a critical value. The sintering process evolves typically in two stages, diffusiondriven macrosegregation sedimentation followed by true sedimentation. During macrosegregation sedimentation, the overall solid volume fraction decreases concurrently with elimination of liquid concentration gradient. However, in the second stage of true sedimentation, the average solid volume fraction in the mushy zone increases with time. It is proposed that the true sedimentation results from particle rearrangement for higher packing efficiency.

Electric double layers interactions under condition of variable dielectric permittivity

  • In this paper, a theoretical method has been developed for the electric double layer interaction under condition of the variable dielectric permittivity of water. Using Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE), for one plate and two plates having similar or dissimilar constant charge or constant potential, we have investigated the electric double layer potential, its gradient and the disjoining pressure as well as the effect of variation of dielectric permittivity on these parameters. It has been assumed that plates are separated by a specific distance and contain a liquid solution in between. It is shown that reduction of the dielectric permittivity near the interfaces results in compression of electric double layers and affects the potential and its gradient which leads to a decreased electrostatic repulsion. In addition, it is shown that variation of dielectric permittivity in the case of higher electrolyte concentration, leads to a greater change in potential distribution between two plates.

  • Experimental investigation have been made to study the double-diffusive nature of convection of an initially stratified salt-water solution heated from below in a cylindrical cavity. The objective is to examine the process of mixed-layer formation, the flow phenomena, the heat transfer characteristics, and temperature and concentration distribution according to the changes in the effective Rayleigh number based on the reference height which represents the relation of temperature and concentration gradient. The types of initially formed flow pattern are categorized in three regimes depending on the effective Rayleigh number ; stagnant flow regime, single mixed-layer flow regime and successively formed multiple mixed-layer flow regime. The temperature and concentration profiles are both uniform in each layer due to convective mixing in the layered flow regime, but both linear in stagnant flow regime and single mixed-layer flow regime. At the interface between adjacent layers, the temperature changes smoothly but the concentration changes rapidly. The layers expand by diffusion of concentration through the interface along with its random fluctuation.

백금 확산 실리콘의 깊은 에너지 준위의 농도분포에 대한 열처리효과 (Annealing Effects on Concentration Profiles of Deep Energy Levels in Platinum-diffused Silicon)

  • The concentration profiles of deep energy levels($E_c$ -0.23e V, $E_v$+0.36e V and $E_c$ -0.23e V) in platinum-diffused silicon have generally a sharp gradient in the vicinity of the surface of the silicon wafer. In this work two efficient methods are proposed to obtain the uniform concentration profiles throughout the silicon wafer. One is that the platinum diffusion is carried out at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 1h in oxygen atmosphere. In this case the values of obtained uniform concentration, $1{\times}10^{15}cm^{-3}$ for the $E_c$ -0.23e V level, and 1{\times}10^{14}cm^{-3}$ for the $E_c$ -0.52e V level, are very restricted, respectively. The other is two-step annealing process. The platinum diffusion is carried out at $850{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen ambient for 1h and then the annealing is performed at $1000^{\circ}C$ in oxygen ambient after removing platinum-source from the platinum diffused samples. The advantage of this method is that the uniform concentration of these levels required power devices can be controlled by setting the desired temperatures when the platinum diffusion is carried out in nitrogen ambient.

수직경사응고(VGF)법에 의한 Si 도핑 GaAs 단결정 성장시 $B_{2}O_{3}$ 첨가에 따른 캐리어 농도 변화 (Control of carrier concentrations by addition of $B_{2}O_{3}$ in Si-doped vertical gradient freeze (VGF) GaAs single crystal growth)

  • PBN 도가니를 이용하여 Si이 도핑된 GaAs 단결정을 수직경사 응고법으로 성장시켰다. PBN 도가니에 산화막인 $B_{2}O_{3}$의 양을 $0{\sim}0.2wt%$ 범위에서 변화시키면서, 성장 후 캐리어 농도를 측정하였다. $B_{2}O_{3}$ 첨가량이 증가함에 따라, 초기 0.1 정도의 Si 도판트의 편석계수는 0.01 부근까지 급격히 감소하고, 동시에 캐리어 농도도 감소하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이는 성장도중 도판트인 Si이 $B_{2}O_{3}$과 반응하며 도너인 Si 양을 감소시키며, 동시에 억셉터인 B 양을 증가시키기 때문으로 보인다. 한편 PBN 도가니 내면에 얇은 유리질의 $B_{2}O_{3}$층 형성이 용이한 고온 산화막 처리가 결함감소에 효과적임을 확인하였다.

$CO_2$ 농도 및 온도 상승에 의한 졸참나무의 생태적 지위 변화 (Variation of Ecological Niche of Quercus serrata under Elevated $CO_2$ Concentration and Temperature)

  • 한반도의 낙엽성 참나무인 졸참나무(Quercus serrata)의 생태적 지위폭이 $CO_2$ 농도와 온도가 상승하였을 때 광, 수분 그리고 영양소 구배에서 어떻게 변화하는지 알아보고자 유리온실에서 대조구와 온난화처리구로 구분하여 재배한 후, 유식물의 20가지 형질을 측정하고 생태적 지위폭을 계산하였다. 그 결과, 생태적 지위폭은 광구배에서 대조구보다 온난화처리구가 넓어졌고, 수분과 영양소 구배에서는 대조구보다 온난화처리구가 좁아졌다. 이것은 지구온난화 진행 시 졸참나무는 광 환경에 대한 내성이 증가되고, 수분과 영양소 환경에 대한 내성이 감소될 것으로 예측할 수 있다. 주성분분석(PCA) 결과, 각 환경 구배에서 요인 1과 요인 2에 의해 대조구와 온난화처리구가 구분되었다. 생태학적 반응은 다양한 형질이 종합적으로 관여하며, 그 중에서 식물의 생산량을 나타내는 형질이 많은 부분 관여하는 것으로 판단된다.

부지화 잎의 화학성분에 기반한 질소결핍 여부 구분 머신러닝 모델 개발 (Development of Machine Learning Models Classifying Nitrogen Deficiency Based on Leaf Chemical Properties in Shiranuhi (Citrus unshiu × C. sinensis))

  • 본 연구에서는 부지화 잎의 무기양분 농도 측정 결과를 바탕으로 질소를 제외한 다른 무기양분의 함량을 통해서 잎의 질소 결핍 여부를 구분하는 머신러닝 모델을 개발하였다. 그러기 위해서 부지화의 질소결핍구와 대조구의 잎 샘플을 분석한 36개의 데이터를 부트스트랩핑 방법을 통해서 학습용 데이터셋 1,000 여 개로 증량시켰다. 이를 이용해 학습한 각 모델을 테스트한 결과, gradient boosting 모델이 가장 우수한 분류성능을 보여주었다. 본 모델을 이용해 질소함량을 직접적으로 분석할 수 없는 경우, 잎의 무기성분 함량에 기반하여 질소결핍 가능성 여부를 판단해 질소가 부족한 부지화 나무를 분별하고, 정확한 질소함량을 측정하게 유도하여 그에 기초한 적정 질소비료 시비를 가능케 하고자 하였다.

Model-Based Simulation Analysis of Wicking Behavior in Hygroscopic Cotton Fabric

  • Hygroscopic knitted cotton fabric was found to spontaneously absorb water showing a significantly wide concentration gradient in the absorption direction. A semi-empirical diffusion model was introduced to describe how the wicking behavior compared to the classical capillary model (Washburn's equation), which has been widely used in the textiles industry. The capillary sorption curve and the permeability coefficient, which are key variables for the model equations, were measured using an electronic balance. The concentration profile as a function of the wicking distance and the elapsed time was derived, based on the diffusion model. From the concentration profile, the wicking distance detectable by the human eye or a digital camera with the aid of an image-analysis system, could be described realistically as a function of the time. The classical capillary model could be modified by introducing the tortuous correction factor to match the diffusion model. Wicking models and data-processing techniques in the work could provide useful tools for objectively evaluating the textile's wicking performances.

사각 건물 주위의 오염물 확산에 대한 수치해석적 연구 (Simulations of Pollutant Dispersion over Rectangular Building)

  • Wind flow perturbations, recirculations and turbulence generated by buildings often dominate air pollutant distributions around buildings. This paper describes dispersion of contaminants in the vicinity of a building by solving the concentration equation based on previously simulated wind flow field. Turbulence closure is achieved by using the standard k-ε two-equation model. The paper shows application of the CIP method for solving a species concentration equation of contaminant gas around a rectangular building for two different sources under conditions of neutral atmospheric stratification. Results have been compared to the experimental data and the previous numerical results by hybrid scheme. The computational results of concentration profiles by the CIP method agree well with experimental data.

  • In this study, the electrokinetic remediation test for the kaolin contaminated by lead was performed and voltage, zeta potential, pH distribution, current, contamination transport in soil sample were studied and finite differential numerical analysis program(HERP) for a contaminated soil were compared with those of test. From the result of HERP, in the anode it was represented that the rest concentration was decreased with the voltage. Hence, if treatment time was continued for a long in the constant voltage, comparing with sample having no change in the rest concentration, it is considered that the voltage gradient is the control factor of the rest concentration.
