  • The top-seeded solution growth (TSSG) method is an effective approach for the growth of high-quality SiC single crystals. In this method, the temperature gradient in the melt is the key factor determining the crystal growth rate and crystal quality. In this study, the effects of the aperture at the top of the hot-zone on the growth of the SiC single crystal obtained using the TSSG method were evaluated using multiphysics simulations. The temperature distribution and C concentration profile in the Si melt were taken into consideration. The simulation results showed that the adjustment of the aperture at the top of the hot-zone and the temperature gradient in the melt could be finely controlled. The surface morphology, crystal quality, and polytype stability of the grown SiC crystals were investigated using optical microscopy, high-resolution X-ray diffraction, and micro-Raman spectroscopy, respectively. The simulation and experimental results suggested that a small temperature gradient at the crystal-melt interface is suitable for growing high-quality SiC single crystals via the TSSG method.

  • Supercritical $CO_2$ chromatography was applied for purification of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from fish oil. Various supercritical $CO_2$ pressures were tested to find out the pressure effects on solubility and selectivity of low fatty acids in the silver nitrate column. The solubility of low fatty acids was increased as the supercntical $CO_2$ Pressure increased. However, the selectiviy between low fatty acids and EPA waw decreased. Stepwise density gradient method was applied to increase the purification efficiency of EPA. Low fatty acids were easily separated at the early elution steps with low $CO_2$ densities. Successive fractions containing 92.1~97.8% of EPA were collected. The average concentration of three purified fractions was 95.6% with the recovery rate of 30%.

  • The morphology, dynamic mechanical behavior and fracture behavior of polyetherimide (PEI)/dicyanate semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) with a morphology spectrum were analyzed. To obtain the morphology spectrum, we disported PEI particles in the procured dicyanate resin containing 300 ppm of zinc stearate catalyst. The semi-IPNs exhibited a morphology spectrum, which consisted of nodular spinodal structure, dual-phase morphology, and sea-island type morphology, in the radial direction of each dispersed PEI particle due to the concentration gradient developed by restricted dissolution and diffusion of the PEI particles during the curing process of the dicyanate resin. Analysis of the dynamic mechanical data obtained by the semi-IPNs demonstrated that the transition of the PEI-rich phase was shifted toward higher temperature as well as becoming broader because of the gradient structure. The semi-IPNs with the morphology spectrum showed improved fracture energy of 0.3 kJ/$m^2$, which was 1.4 times that of the IPNS having sea-island type morphology. It was found that the partially introduced nodular structure played a crucial role in the enhancement of the fracture resistance of the semi-IPNs.

  • Temperature gradient focusing (TGF) of analytes via Joule heating is achieved when electric field is applied along a microchannel of varying width. The effect of varying width of the microchannel for the focusing performance of the device was numerically studied. The governing equations were implemented into a quasi-1D numerical model along a microchannel. The validity of the numerical model was verified by a comparison between numerical and experimental results. The distributions of temperature, velocity, and concentration along a microchannel were predicted by the numerical results. The narrower middle width and wider outside width of the channel having the fixed length contribute to improve the focusing performance of the device. However, too narrow middle width of the channel generates a higher temperature which can cause the problems including sample denaturation and buffer solution boiling. Therefore, the channel geometry should be optimized to prevent these problems. The optimal widths of the microchannel for the improvement on TGF were proposed and this model can be easily applied to lab-on-a-chip (LOC) applications where focusing is required based on its simple design.

  • The mathematical aspects of Dufour and Soret phenomena on the peristalsis of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Jeffrey liquid in a symmetric channel are presented. Fluid viscosity is taken variably. Lubrication approach has been followed. Results for the velocity, temperature, and concentration are constructed and explored for the emerging parameters entering into the present problem. The plotted quantities lead to comparative study between the constant and variable viscosities fluids. Graphical results indicate that for non-Newtonian materials, pressure gradient is maximum, whereas pressure gradient is slowed down for variable viscosity. Also both velocity and temperature in the case of variable viscosity are at maximum when compared with results for constant viscosity.

  • The effects of argon gas flow on the axial temperature gradient near the interface, the oxygen concentration, and the radial oxygen uniformity was investigated for 8-inch CZ silicon growth. As argon flow rate was increased, the temperature gradient was increased in the crystal near the crystavmelt interface and the oxygen content in the crystal was decreased. But the radial oxygen uniformity was deteriorated. It was found that argon flow is one of the important growing parameters to affect the quality of crystals such as oxygen content and uniformity.

  • It is well known that poly(glutamate)s with long n-alkyl side chains form thermotropic liquid crystalline state by melting of the side-chain crystallites and also poly(glutamate)s such as poly(${\gamma}-benzyl\;L-glutamate$ )(PBLG), poly(${\gamma}-n-alkyl\;L-glutamate$), etc. in solvent form the isotropic, biphasic and liquid crystalline phases which contains cholesteric and columnar liquid crystalline forms depending on the polypeptide concentration. Although there is no diffusion study for PBLG in liquid crystalline state, because it is difficult to observed $^{1}H$ spectrum of PBLG in liquid crystalline state for its very short $^{1}H\;T_{2}$. In this study, the diffusional behavior of rodlike PBLG in concentrated solution is successfully elucidated as studied by the field-gradient $^{1}H$ NMR methods.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop the model of turbulence modulation due to the presence of particles in various types of particle-laden flows Available experimental data are surveyed and the dependence of turbulence modulation of carrier-phase on particle size, concentration and. particle Reynolds number are examined. This study takes into account the effect of wake produced by particle, the drag between phases and the velocity gradient in the wake to estimate the production of turbulence. The model of turbulence modulation using the mixing length theory under the assumption of equilibrium flow is proposed. Numerical results show that the model is successful in predicting the characteristics of the particle-laden in various flow conditions both qualitatively and quantitatively.

  • A sequencing batch reactor was operated under different pH conditions to see the influence of free ammonia (FA) and free nitrous acid (FNA) to microbial community on ammonium partial nitrification. Long-term influences of FA and FNA were evaluated by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Nitrite accumulation was successfully achieved at pH 8.2 and 6.3. The shifts in the microbial community were observed when influent ammonia concentration increased to 1 g $NH_4$-N/L at pH 8.2, and then when pH was dropped to 6.3. Both Nitrosomonas and Nitrosospira were selected during the startup of the reactor, and eventually became dominant members as ammonia-oxidizing bacteria. The results of molecular microbiological analysis strongly suggested that the composition of microbial community was changed according to the method used to control nitrite-oxidizing bacteria.

  • The relaxation phenomena of ionic currents through the charged membrane under the constant applied potentials has been studied. The formulation was obtained for the non stationary current by assuming that the ion mobility is independent of concentration and the potential gradient is a constant within membrane, and it was applied to the experimental results with the sulfonated polystyrene collodion base membrane. It has been shown that the initial ion distributions in the membrane play a predominant role in the relaxation phenomena.
