In this paper, we propose a new free-view three-dimensional (3D) computational reconstruction of integral imaging to improve the visual quality of reconstructed 3D images when low-resolution elemental images are used. In a conventional free-view reconstruction, the visual quality of the reconstructed 3D images is insufficient to provide 3D information to applications because of the shift and sum process. In addition, its processing speed is slow. To solve these problems, our proposed method uses a pixel rearrangement technique (PERT) with locally selective elemental images. In general, PERT can reconstruct 3D images with a high visual quality at a fast processing speed. However, PERT cannot provide a free-view reconstruction. Therefore, using our proposed method, free-view reconstructed 3D images with high visual qualities can be generated when low-resolution elemental images are used. To show the feasibility of our proposed method, we applied it to optical experiments.

This research is comprised of virtually simulating behavior while experiencing low gravity effects in advance of real world testing in low gravity aboard Zero Gravity Corporation's (Zero-G) research aircraft (727-200F). The experiment simulated a drill rig penetrating a regolith simulant. Regolith is a layer of loose, heterogeneous superficial deposits covering solid rock on surfaces of the Earth' moon, asteroids and Mars. The behavior and propagation of space debris when drilled in low gravity was tested through simulations and visualization in a leading dynamic simulation software as well as discrete element modeling software and in preparation for comparing to real world results from flying the experiment aboard Zero-G. The study of outer space regolith could lead to deeper scientific knowledge of extra-terrestrial surfaces, which could lead us to breakthroughs with respect to space mining or in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). These studies aimed to test and evaluate the drilling process in low to zero gravity environments and to determine static stress analysis on the drill when tested in low gravity environments. These tests and simulations were conducted by a team from Texas A&M University's Department of Construction Science, the United States Air Force Academy's Department of Astronautical Engineering, and Crow Industries
How is the flow in a rotating impeller. About 35 years have passed since one experimentalist rotating with the impeller. of a huge centrifugal blower made the flow measurements using a hot-wire anemometer (Fowler 1968). Optical measurement methods have great advantages over the intrusive methods especially for the flow measurement in a rotating impeller. One is the optical flow visualization (FV) technique (Senoo, et al., 1968) and the other is the application of laser velocimetry (LV) (Hah and Krain, 1990). Particle image velocimetries (PIVs) combine major features of both FV and LV, and are very attractive due to the feasibility of simultaneous and multi-points measurements (Hayami and Aramaki, 1999). A high-pressure-ratio transonic centrifugal compressor with a low-solidity cascade diffuser was tested in a closed loop with HFC134a gas at 18,000rpm (Hayami, 2000). Two kinds of measurement techniques by image processing were applied to visualize a flow in the compressor. One is a velocity field measurement at the inducer of the impeller using a PIV and the other is a pressure field measurement on the side wall of the cascade diffuser using a pressure sensitive paint (PSP) measurement technique. The PIV was successfully applied for visualization of an unsteady behavior of a shock wave based on the instantaneous velocity field measurement (Hayami, et al., 2002b) as well as a phase-averaged velocity vector field with a shock wave over one blade pitch (Hayami, et al., 2002a. b). A violent change in pressure was successfully visualized using a PSP measurement during a surge condition even though there are still some problems to be overcome (Hayami, et al., 2002c). Both PIV and PSP results are discussed in comparison with those of laser-2-focus (L2F) velocimetry and those of semiconductor pressure sensors. Experimental fluid dynamics (EFDs) are still growing up more and more both in hardware and in software. On the other hand, computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) are very attractive to understand the details of flow. A secondary flow on the side wall of the cascade diffuser was visualized based either steady or unsteady CFD calculations (Bonaiuti, et al.,2002). EFD and CFD methods will be combined to a hybrid method being complementary to each other. Measurement techniques by image processing as well as CFD calculations give a huge amount of data. Then, data mining technique will become more important to understand the flow mechanism both for EFD and CFD.

Both flow visualizations and computational fluid dynamics were performed to determine hemodynamics in a total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) model for surgically correcting congenital heart defects. From magnetic resonance images, an anatomically correct glass model was fabricated to visualize steady flow. The total flow rates were 4, 6 and 8L/min and flow rates from SVC and IVC were 40:60. The flow split ratio between LPA and RPA was varied by 70:30, 60:40 and 50:50. A pressure-based finite-volume software was used to solve steady flow dynamics in TCPC models. Results showed that superior vena cava(SVC) and inferior vena cava(IVC) flow merged directly to the intra-atrial conduit, creating two large vortices. Significant swirl motions were observed in the intra-atrial conduit and pulmonary arteries. Flow collision or swirling flow resulted in energy loss in TCPC models. In addition, a large intra-atrial channel or a sharp bend in TCPC geometries could influence on energy losses. Energy conservation was efficient when flow rates in pulmonary branches were balanced. In order to increase energy efficiency in Fontan operations, it is necessary to remove a flow collision in the intra-atrial channel and a sharp bend in the pulmonary bifurcation.
Computational thinking with programming skills has been widely emphasized for future industrial engineering researchers and practitioners in Industry 4.0. However, industrial engineering students still have limited opportunities to improve their computational thinking abilities during university coursework. In this regard, this research study proposes to use Python programming language for teaching classical Industrial Engineering subjects. For a specific case study, we designed and instructed an Engineering Economy lecture which cultivates the concept and techniques of economic analysis for engineering students. During the class, we introduced the usage of several Python libraries that include numpy-financial for basic financial functions, numpy and scipy for simple numerical computation and analysis, and matplotlib for data visualization. Anonymous class evaluation survey showed the effectiveness of the proposed teaching method in terms of both educational satisfaction and contents delivery. Finally, we found additional needs for providing lectures that adopt the similar teaching style to the proposed method.

Ultrasound imaging is a widely used tool for visualizing human body's internal organs and quantifying clinical parameters. Due to its advantages such as safety, non-invasiveness, portability, low cost and real-time 2D/3D imaging, diagnostic ultrasound industry has steadily grown. Since the technology advancements such as digital beam-forming, Doppler ultrasound, real-time 3D imaging and automated diagnosis techniques, there are still a lot of demands for image quality improvement, faster and accurate imaging, 3D color Doppler imaging and advanced functional imaging modes. In order to satisfy those demands, mathematics should be used properly and effectively in ultrasound imaging. Mathematics has been used commonly as mathematical modelling, numerical solutions and visualization, combined with science and engineering. In this article, we describe a brief history of ultrasound imaging, its basic principle, its applications in obstetrics/gynecology, cardiology and radiology, domestic-industrial products, contributions of mathematics and challenging issues in ultrasound imaging.
Direct numerical simulations are peformed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow suddenly subjected to spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces in the near-wall region. The Reynolds number based on the inlet momentum thickness and free-stream velocity is $Re_\theta=300$. A fully-implicit fractional step method is employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses are obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin-friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electro-magnetic forces. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques are used to observe the response of streamwise vortices to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are clearly affected by spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces.

The squeal propensity of an automotive disc brake system is studied in the theoretical and computational manner. The rotating disc is in contact with two stationary pads and the nonlinear friction is engaged on the contact surface. The friction-coupled equations of motion are derived in the finite element(FE) of the actual brake disc and pad. From the general definition of friction force, the rotation and in-plane mode effects can be included properly in the brake squeal model. The eigenvalue sensitivity analysis and the mode shape visualization at squeal frequencies are also conducted for the detailed investigation. It is found that the squeal propensity is strongly influenced by rotation effect and the in-plane mode can be involved in squeal generation.
This paper presents the development and application of electrical resistance imaging techniques for the visualization of two-phase flow fields. Two algorithms, the so-called the mesh grouping and the boundary estimation, are described for potential applications of electrical resistance tomography (ERT) and results from extensive numerical simulations are also presented. In the electrical resistance imaging for two-phase flows, numerical meshes fairly belonging to each phase can be grouped to improve the reconstruction performance. In many cases, the detection of phase boundary is a key subject and a mathematical model to estimate phase boundary can be formulated in a different manner. Our results indicated that the mesh grouping algorithm is effective to enhance computational performance and image quality, and boundary estimation algorithm to determine the phase boundary directly.

This study was performed to analyze the fluid flow characteristics and the temperature distribution of the aquarium for fish breeding. In this study, the finite volume method and turbulence k-$\varepsilon$ model with the SIMPLE computational algorithm are used to study the water flow in the aquarium. The calculation parameters are the circulating flow rate and the basin depth, and the experiments were carried out for the water flow visualization This numerical analysis gives reasonable velocity distributions in good agreement with the experimental data. As the results of the three dimmentional simulations, the sectional mean velocity increased as the sectional mean temperature increases for constant basin depth, and the mean velocity increased more rapidly for small basin depth than that of large basin depth, The mean velocity and temperature can be expressed as the function of the circulating flow rates and the basin depth.
