  • The hydraulic design optimization and performance analysis of mixed-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion has been carried out using mean streamline analysis and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. In the present study, the conceptual design optimization has been formulated with a non-linear objective function to minimize the fluid dynamic losses, and then the commercial CFD code was incorporated to allow for detailed flow dynamic phenomena in the pump system. Newly designed mixed-flow model pump has been tested in the laboratory. Predicted performance curves by the CFD code agree very well with experimental data for a newly designed mixed-flow pump over the normal operating conditions. The design and prediction method presented herein can be used efficiently as a unified hydraulic design process of mired-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion.

  • Safety management has become even more important because of the safety and environmental issues that have arisen since the 2000s. However, the safety study requires many empirical data, so there are many limitations. In the case of pipe safety, simulation programs exist, but it is difficult to get data about the pipe internal erosion of the pipe. In this study, the erosion rate of the pipe elbow was simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Also, the failure period of the pipe was calculated by the limit state function using erosion rate. In the case of CFD pipe, a sample which is actually operated in Yeosu industrial complex was used, and the geometry and mesh formation were rationalized in terms of typical fluid dynamics simulations. Using the Discrete Phase Model (DPM) and the corrosion model, the erosion rate (3.09227mmyr1) was obtained from CFD simulations. As a result of applying the erosion rate to the limit state function, we obtained the pipe failure period value, 14.2 years to trigger a leak and 28.2 years to trigger a burst. Through these processes, we concluded that pipe erosion is one of the major failure modes. In addition to the results, this study has significance for suggesting the methodology of the pipe safety study.

  • Using the CFD method, the pressure drop in 6 cyclone dust collectors of different shape were calculated. And the results were compared with results of the conventional theories. Equations of Shepherd and Lapple (1939, 1940), First (1950), Alexander (1949), Stairmand (1949), Barth (1956) were used in the theoretical calculation. In CFD calculations, we used standard k-epsilon model for analysis of turbulent flow, fluid is 25C air, the velocity at inlet is 10 m/s and the temperature is 25C. In CFD analysis results, the pressure distributions along the flow showed similar patterns in different cyclone shapes. But the pressure drop distributions estimated on the conventional theories had big difference in different cyclone shapes. Only First's theory and CFD analysis showed similar results.

  • Objective : The objective of this study was to analyze patient-specific blood flow in ruptured aneurysms using obtained non-Newtonian viscosity and to observe associated hemodynamic features and morphological effects. Methods : Five patients with acute subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by ruptured posterior communicating artery aneurysms were included in the study. Patients' blood samples were measured immediately after enrollment. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was conducted to evaluate viscosity distributions and wall shear stress (WSS) distributions using a patient-specific geometric model and shear-thinning viscosity properties. Results : Substantial viscosity change was found at the dome of the aneurysms studied when applying non-Newtonian blood viscosity measured at peak-systole and end-diastole. The maximal WSS of the non-Newtonian model on an aneurysm at peak-systole was approximately 16% lower compared to Newtonian fluid, and most of the hemodynamic features of Newtonian flow at the aneurysms were higher, except for minimal WSS value. However, the differences between the Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow were not statistically significant. Rupture point of an aneurysm showed low WSS regardless of Newtonian or non-Newtonian CFD analyses. Conclusion : By using measured non-Newtonian viscosity and geometry on patient-specific CFD analysis, morphologic differences in hemodynamic features, such as changes in whole blood viscosity and WSS, were observed. Therefore, measured non-Newtonian viscosity might be possibly useful to obtain patient-specific hemodynamic and morphologic result.

  • This paper presents the transient performance analysis of a micro-hydro Pelton turbine for the osmotic power generation using the commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, ANSYS CFX. The detailed flow field in the micro Pelton turbine with a single-jet is investigated by the CFD code adopted in the present study. Predicted characteristic curves agree fairly well with measured data for a prototype Pelton turbine over the normal operating conditions. The computational analysis method presented herein can be effectively applied to the hydraulic design optimization process of general purpose Pelton turbine runners.

  • Liquid hydrogen, which operates in cryogenic environments has a density 800 times greater than gaseous hydrogen, making it advantageous for large-scale storage and transportation. However, continuous evaporation due to external heat intrusion and internal heat generation poses challenges. To mitigate heat conduction, various insulation materials are used. In pipe systems, viscous heating effects from turbulence and viscosity, especially in bends, cause heat generation. This study employs computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to analyze the impact of fluid velocity, pressure drop, inner diameter, and curvature radius of pipe bends on viscous heating. Using liquid nitrogen at 77 K as a working fluid, the CFD results showed that increased velocity and pressure drop along with smaller inner diameter and curvature radius enhanced viscous heating, raising fluid temperature.
