A computational work of the impulse wave which is discharged from the open end of a pipe is compared to the Lighthill\`s aeroacoustics theory. The second-order total variation diminishing(TVD) scheme is employed to solve the axisymmetric, compressible, unsteady Euler equations. The relationship between the initial compressure wave form and the resulting impulse wave is characterized in terms of the peak pressure. The overpressure, pressure gradient and wavelength of the initial compression wave are changed to investigate the influence of the initial compressure wave form on the peak pressure of impulse wave. The results obtained show that for the initial compression wave of a large wavelength and small pressure gradient the peak pressure of the impulse wave depends upon the wavelength and pressure gradient of compression wave, but for the initial compression wave of a short wavelength and large pressure gradient the peak pressure of the impulse wave is almost constant regardless of the wavelength and pressure gradient of compression wave. The peak pressure of the impulse wave is increased with an increase in the overpressure of the initial compression wave. The results from the numerical ana1ysis are well compared to the results from the aeroacoutics theory with a food agreement.

A hybrid method is presented for efficient computation of turbulent flow noise at low Mach numbers. In this method, the turbulent flow field is computed by incompressible large eddy simulation (LES), while the acoustic field is computed with the linearized perturbed compressible equations (LPCE) derived in this study. Since LPCE is computed on the rather coarse acoustic grid with the flow variables and source term obtained by the incompressible LES, the computational efficiency of calculation is greatly enhanced. Furthermore, LPCE suppress the instability of perturbed vortical mode and therefore secure consistent and stable acoustic solutions. The proposed LES/LPCE hybrid method is applied to three low Mach number turbulent flow noise problems: i) circular cylinder, ii) isolated flat plate, and iii) interaction between cylinder wake and airfoil. The computed results are closely compared with the experimental measurements.
Noise generated by the blunt trailing edge of lifting surfaces is investigated in this study using fluid structure interaction theory. First, through the eddy modeling, noise generation doe to the flow instability on the rigid trailing edge is surveyed. Then the behavior of elastic cantileverd beam is investigated. Parametric study based on various material properties is employed to analyze the motion of the beam. Moreover, each eigenmode approach of cantilevered beam is used to find when flow induced vibration is resonant. To analyze elastic behavior of cantilever beam efficiently, moving grid generation technique based on non-conservative form of Navier-Stokes equation is used. Equation of the motion associated with the cantilever beam is discretized by the Galerkin procedure with forced vibration. As a consequence, behavior of the elastic cantilevered beam is stable when the first mode natural frequency of the material is relatively higher than that of flow induced pressure fluctuation.
Acoustic pressure field around the cross-flow fan is predicted by a hydrodynamic-acoustic splitting method. Unsteady flow field is obtained by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using an unstructured finite-volume method on the triangular meshes, while the acoustic waves generated inside the cross-flow fan are predicted by solving the perturbed compressible equations(PCE) with a 6th-order compact finite difference method. Computational results show that the acoustic waves of BPF tone are generated by interactions of the blades wakes with the stabilizer, which then are reflected from the rear-guider and mainly propagate towards the fan inlet. Also, a directivity of BPF noise predicted by the PCE is noticeably different from that of the FW-H equations, in which a fan casing effect cannot be included.

Aeroacoustic computation of a fully-developed turbulent pipe flow at $Re_{\tau}=175$ and M = 0.1 is conducted by LES/LPCE hybrid method. The generation and propagation of acoustic waves are computed by solving the linearized perturbed compressible equations (LPCE), with acoustic source DP(x,t)/Dt attained by the incompressible large eddy simulation (LES). The computed acoustic power spectral density is closely compared with the wall shear-stress dipole source of a turbulent channel flow at $Re_{\tau}=175$. A constant decaying rate of the acoustic power spectrum, $f^{-8/5}$ is found to be related to the turbulent bursts of the correlated longitudinal structures such as hairpin vortex and their merged structures (or hairpin packets). The power spectra of the streamwise velocity fluctuations across the turbulent boundary layer indicate that the most intensive noise at ${\omega}^+$ < 0.1 is produced in the buffer layer with fluctuations of the longitudinal structures ($k_zR$ < 1.5).

We investigate the slat noise generation mechanism by using large-eddy simulation (LES) and simple source modeling based on linearized Euler equations. An incompressible LES of an MD 30P30N three-element airfoil in the high-lift configuration is conducted at $Re_c=1.7{\times}10^6$. Using the total derivative of the hydrodynamic pressure (DP/Dt) acquired from the incompressible LES, representative noise sources in the slat cove region are characterized in terms of simple sources such as frequency-specific monopoles and dipoles. Acoustic radiation around the 30P30N multi-element airfoil is effectively computed using the Brinkman penalization method incorporated with the linearized Euler equation. The directivity pattern of $p^{\prime}_{rms}$ at $r=20c_{slat}$ in the multiple sources is closely compared to that obtained by the application of the LES/Ffowcs-Williams and Hawking's methods to the entire flow field. The power spectrum of p' at ${\theta}=290^{\circ}$ is in good agreement with the data reported in BANC-III, especially the broadband part of the spectrum with a decaying slope ${\propto}f^{-3}$.

Among underwater noise sources around submerged bodies, turbulence-induced noise has not been well investigated because of the difficulty of predicting it. In computational aeroacoustics, a number of studies has been conducted using the Ffowcs Williamse-Hawkings (FW-H) acoustic analogy without consideration of quadrupole source term due to the unacceptable calculation cost. In this paper, turbulence-induced noise is predicted, including that due to quadrupole sources, using a large eddy simulation (LES) turbulence model and a developed formulation of permeable FW-H method with an open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool-kit. Noise around a circular cylinder is examined and the results of using the acoustic analogy method with and without quadrupole noise are compared, i.e. the FW-H method without quadrupole noise versus the permeable FW-H method that includes quadrupole sources. The usability of the permeable FW-H method for the prediction of turbulence-noise around submerged bodies is shown.

This paper focuses on the numerical prediction of airflow-induced sound in DVD drives. As a first step, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is conducted to evaluate flow field characteristics due to the high-speed disk rotation, and to support the acoustic analysis. Acoustic analogy based on Ffowcs Wi1liams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation is adopted to predict aeroacoustic noise patterns. The integral solution for quadrupole volume source is included to identify the turbulence noise generated inside the DVD tray. The strength of sound pressure revel with respect to rotating speed is discussed to meet upfront demand on the high fidelity product development. The present study also focuses on the noise directivity and examines how much the sound noise is sensitive to change in rotating speed. Near-field noise is strongly affected by the flow field characteristic, which is caused by the complex shape of the tray. For a mid-field, the quadrupole noise play as a counterpart of thickness noise or loading noise, so it generates different sound noise Patterns compared with those in the near field.
The turbulence noise generated from blunt trailing-edge is numerically predicted by using the hydrodynamic/acoustic splitting method at the Reynolds number based on thickness of flat plate, $Re_h=1000$, and the freestream Mach number $M_o=0.2$. The turbulent flow field is simulated by incompressible large-eddy simulation and the acoustic field is predicted efficiently with the linearized perturbed compressible equations (LPCE) recently proposed by the authors. The turbulent flow characteristics are validated with the results of the previous experimental study and direct numerical simulation. The acoustic properties predicted from LPCE are compared with the solutions of analytical formulations.
