  • The criticality analysis of VVER-1000 mock-up benchmark experiments from the LR-0 research reactor operated by the Research Center Rez in the Czech Republic has been conducted with the MCS Monte Carlo code developed at the Computational Reactor Physics and Experiment laboratory of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology. The main purpose of this work is to evaluate the newest ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data library against the VVER-1000 mock-up integral experiments and to validate the criticality analysis capability of MCS for light water reactors with hexagonal fuel lattices. A preliminary code/code comparison between MCS and MCNP6 is first conducted to verify the suitability of MCS for the benchmark interpretation, then the validation against experimental data is performed with both ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 libraries. The investigated experimental data comprises six experimental critical configurations and four experimental pin-by-pin power maps. The MCS and MCNP6 inputs used for the criticality analysis of the VVER-1000 mock-up are available as supplementary material of this article.

  • The structural safety of hydrogen buses is being evaluated for the successful introduction of hydrogen buses. The crash test methodology, for example, side impact test procedure is being discussed for hydrogen bus structure safety with a compressed hydrogen storage system located under the bus floor. Thus this study describes a new experiment method for side impact test with compressed hydrogen storage system independently based on finite element analysis instead of side impact test using full hydrogen bus. A side crash procedure of conceptual compressed hydrogen storage structure was investigated and impact simulations were performed. The finite element models of hydrogen bus, simplified structures, fuel tank system and side impact moving barrier were set up and simulation results reported model performance and result comparison of three different simplified models. Computational results and research discussion proposed the fundamental test framework for safety assessment of the compressed hydrogen storage system.

  • This paper considers a method of fast correspondence matching for iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm. In robotics, the ICP algorithm and its variants have been widely used for pose estimation by finding the translation and rotation that best align two point clouds. In computational perspectives, the main difficulty is to find the correspondence point on the reference point cloud to each observed point. Jump-table-based correspondence matching is one of the methods for reducing computation time. This paper proposes a method that corrects errors in an existing jump-table-based correspondence matching algorithm. The criterion activating the use of jump-table is modified so that the correspondence matching can be applied to the situations, such as point-cloud registration problems with highly curved surfaces, for which the existing correspondence-matching method is non-applicable. For demonstration, both hardware and simulation experiments are performed. In a hardware experiment using Hokuyo-10LX LiDAR sensor, our new algorithm shows 100% correspondence matching accuracy and 88% decrease in computation time. Using the F1TENTH simulator, the proposed algorithm is tested for an autonomous driving scenario with 2D range-bearing point cloud data and also shows 100% correspondence matching accuracy.

  • The broadband noise can be dominant or important for total characteristics for marine propeller noise representing the minimum base of self-noise. Accurate prediction of such noise is crucial for survivability of underwater military vessels. While the FW-H Formulation 1B can be used to predict broadband trailing edge noise, the method required experiment measurements of surface pressure correlations, showing its limitations in generality. Therefore, in this study, the methods are developed to utilize wall pressure spectrum models to overcome those limitations. Chase model is adopted to represent surface pressure along with the developed formulations to reproduce pressure statistics. Newly developed method is validated with the experiments of airfoils at different velocities. Thereafter, with its feasibility and generality, the procedure incorporating computational fluid dynamics is established and performed for a propeller behind submarine hull. The results are compared with the experiments conducted at Large Cavitation Tunnel, thus showing its usability and robustness.

  • An experiment on the devices that enchance the stratification of storage tanks in a solar heat ins system has been carried out. The benefits of thermal stratification in sensible heat storage are to increase the system performance such as the collector efficiency or the fraction of the total load supplied by solar energy. Using the diffuser and the distributor as the stratification enchancement device, the expeliments were perfomed in the different condition of diameter and material of the distributor. As a result of experiments, there exists the diameter of distributor in which the stratification is made maximum under certain design and operation condition. Also it was identified that the kind of distributor material influenced the degree of stratification. Comparing the experimental result to the computational results calculated under the same conditions, the node number N(stratification index) was determined. The results of computer simulation that was performed about the actual solar heating system in Seoul for 24 hours show the relative advantage of stratified over well-mixed storage and the significant improvements in system performance.

  • Repacked mobile apps constitute about 78% of all malware of Android, and it greatly affects the technical ecosystem of Android. Although many methods exist for repacked app detection, most of them suffer from performance issues. In this manuscript, a novel method using the Constant Key Point Selection and Limited Binary Pattern (CKPS: LBP) Feature extraction-based Hashing is proposed for the identification of repacked android applications through the visual similarity, which is a notable feature of repacked applications. The results from the experiment prove that the proposed method can effectively detect the apps that are similar visually even that are even under the double fold content manipulations. From the experimental analysis, it proved that the proposed CKPS: LBP method has a better efficiency of detecting 1354 similar applications from a repository of 95124 applications and also the computational time was 0.91 seconds within which a user could get the decision of whether the app repacked. The overall efficiency of the proposed algorithm is 41% greater than the average of other methods, and the time complexity is found to have been reduced by 31%. The collision probability of the Hashes was 41% better than the average value of the other state of the art methods.

  • The purpose of this study was to propose a design that shows optimal performance by changing the geometry of the internal flow path of the receptacle in order to prevent the decrease in flow rate and differential pressure performance due to the application of the receptacle in the hydrogen charging system. To achieve this, 3D computational fluid dynamics simulation was performed for the receptacle, according to the geometry of the flow path inside the receptacle. The pressure results at the inlet and outlet were measured the same as both of N and H2 in the experiment, and the flow rate of H2 was 3.75 times higher than that of N2. In addition, since the flow performance of the receptacle improved under conditions where the flow path was widened, it was confirmed that reducing the diameter of the poppet and the width of the guide are advantageous for improving performance.

  • Marine reactor systems experience platform movement, and therefore, the system thermal-hydraulic analysis code needs to reflect the motion effect on the fluid to evaluate reactor safety. A moving reactor model for MARS-KS was developed to simulate the hydrodynamic phenomena in the reactor under motion conditions; however, its applicability does not cover the MULTID component used in multidimensional flow analyses. In this study, a moving reactor model is implemented for the MULTID component to address the importance of multidimensional flow effects under dynamic motion. The concept of the volume connection is generalized to facilitate the handling of the junction of MULTID. Further, the accuracy in calculating the pressure head between volumes is enhanced to precisely evaluate the additional body force. Finally, the Coriolis force is modeled in the momentum equations in an acceleration form. The improvements are verified with conceptual problems; the modified model shows good agreement with the analytical solutions and the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation results. Moreover, a simplified gravity-driven injection is simulated, and the model is validated against a ship flooding experiment. Throughout the verifications and validations, the model showed that the modification was well implemented to determine the capability of multidimensional flow analysis under ocean conditions.

  • General underwater target detection methods adopt short-time FFT for estimate target doppler. This paper proposes the efficient target detection method, instead of conventional FFT, using approximate FFT for distributed sensor network target detection, which requires lighter computations. In the proposed method, we decrease computational rate of FFT by the quantization of received signal. For validation of the proposed method, experiment result which is applied to FFT based active sonar detector and real oceanic data is presented.

  • The High Temperature Test Unit (HTTU) was an experimental set-up to conduct separate and integral effects tests of the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) core. The annular core consisted of a randomly packed bed of uniform spheres. Natural convection tests using both nitrogen and helium, and forced convection tests using nitrogen, were conducted. The maximum material temperature achieved during forced convection testing was 1200 ℃. This paper presents the numerical analysis of the flow and temperature distribution for a forced convection test using 3D CFD as well as a 1D systems-CFD computer code. Several modelling approaches are possible, ranging from a fully explicit to a semi-implicit method that relies on correlations of their associated phenomena. For the comparison between codes, the analysis was performed using a porous media approach, where the conduction and radiative heat transfer were lumped together as an effective thermal conductivity and the convective heat transfer was correlated between the solid and gas phases. The results from both codes were validated against the experimental measurements. Favourable results were obtained, in particular by the systems-CFD code with minimal computational and time requirements.
