  • Poor strength test results are sometimes not an indication of low concrete quality, but rather inferior testing quality. In a compression test, the strain distribution over the ends of the specimen is a critical factor for the test results. Non-uniform straining of a concrete specimen leads to locally different compressive stresses on the cross-section, and eventual premature breaking of the specimen. Its effect on a specimen can be quantified by comparing the compressive strength results of two specimens, one subjected to uniform strain and another to a specified strain gradient. This can be done with the help of a function that relates two parameters, the strain ratio and the test efficiency. Such a function depends on the concrete strength and cross-sectional shape of the specimen. In this study, theoretical relationships between the strain ratio and test efficiency are developed using a concrete stress-strain model. The results show that for the same strain ratio, the test efficiency is larger for normal strength concrete than for high strength concrete. Further, the effect of the strain gradient on the test result depends on the cross-sectional shape of the specimen. Implementation of the results is demonstrated with the aid of two examples.

  • Uniaxial tensile test are generally much simpler than uniaxial compressive test. Uniaxial compressive test is experimentally more difficult because of the low buckling resistance of a sheet of paper. In order to avoid buckling, many researchers have applied various lateral restraint techniques to investigate paper uniaxial compression behavior. Adding unnecessary force to inhibit compressive deformation of the sheet is unwanted, but sufficient force must be used to inhibit buckling. This study has been carried out to develop new uniaxial compressive standard test method without exerting unnecessary force to paper specimen to prevent buckling.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a prediction model for the compressive strength of waste LCD glass applied in concrete by analyzing a series of laboratory test results, which were obtained in our previous study. The hyperbolic function was used to perform the nonlinear-multivariate regression analysis of the compressive strength prediction model with the following parameters: water-binder ratio w/b, curing age t, and waste glass content G. According to the relative regression analysis, the compressive strength prediction model is developed. The calculated results are in accord with the laboratory measured data, which are the concrete compressive strengths of different mix proportions. In addition, a coefficient of determination $R^2$ value between 0.93 and 0.96 and a mean absolute percentage error MAPE between 5.4% and 8.4% were obtained by regression analysis using the predicted compressive analysis value, and the test results are also excellent. Therefore, the predicted results for compressive strength are highly accurate for waste LCD glass applied in concrete. Additionally, this predicted model exhibits a good predictive capacity when employed to calculate the compressive strength of washed glass sand concrete.

  • This paper presents experimental and analytical results of glass fiber-reinforced concrete (GFRC) and polypropylene fiber-reinforced concrete (PERC) to investigate the relationship between tensile strength and compressive strength based on the split cylinder test (ASTM C496) and compressive strength test (ASTM C39). Experimental studies were performed on cylinder specimens having 150 mm in diameter an 300 mm in height with two different fiber contents (1.0 and 1.5% by volume fraction) at ages of 7, 28 and 90 days. A total of 90 cylinder specimens were tested including specimens made of the plain concrete. The experimental data have been used to obtain the relationship between tensile strength and compressive strength. A representative equation is proposed for the relationship between tensile strength and compressive strength of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) including glass and polypropylene fibers. There is a good agreement between the average experimental results and those calculated values from the proposed equation.

  • The laminated sequence and thickness of a composite structure is an important design parameter which affect the strength and impact damage. In this study, it was investigated the residual strength of carbon fiber laminate after impact damage by the experimental investigation. The tensile strength test and compressive strength test were used to find the mechanical properties, previously. Impact test was performed using low-velocity drop-weight test equipment. The impact damages were finally assessed by the compressive strength test. The investigation results revealed the residual strength of the damaged specimens due to the impact damage.

  • Extensive research has been conducted on the basic mechanical property and structural applications of engineered cementitious composites (ECC). Despite the high tensile ductility and high toughness of ECC, transverse steel reinforcement is still necessary to confine ECC for high performance. However, limited research has examined performance of ECC confined with practical amount of transverse reinforcement. This paper presents the results of axial compression tests on 14 square ECC columns and 4 conventional concrete columns (used as control specimens) with transverse reinforcement. The test variables were spacing, configuration (square ties or square and diamond shape ties), and yield strength of stirrups. The test showed that ECC columns confined with steel stirrup had good compressive ductility, and the stirrup spacing had the greatest effect on the compressive performance. The self-confinement effect of ECC results in a more uniform but slower expansion of the whole column compared with CC ones. The test results are then compared against the predictions from a number of existing models for conventional confined concrete. It is indicated that these models fail to predict the axial strains at peak axial stress and the trend of the stress-strain curve of steel stirrups-confined ECC with sufficient accuracy. Several new equations are then proposed for the compressive properties of steel-confined ECC based on test results and potential approaches for future studies are proposed.

  • The purpose of this study is to find at the basic data for the appropriate compressibility of the pillows for the Koreans as well as, for the appropriate conditions to establish the estimating criterion for the pillows on the market place. This paper also aim to grasp thr compressibility of the materials used to make the pillows for sale. The appropriate compressive rate of the pillows have been investigated by sensuous test. The compressive rate, recovery rate, and decreasing rate of compression and recovery have been investigated by means of ergonomic and physical experiments. The results were as follows; 1) By sensuous test, the compressive rate of the pillows for the most comfortable state turns up $45\%{\pm}5\%$ in men and women. 2) As for the compressive rate and recovery rate of the eight pillow materials on market, panya, duck feather two kinds of synthetic fiber are highest, wood is lowest. 3) The compressive rate of panya, duck feather, and two kinds of fiber is within the range of the comfort by sensuous test. 4) In the durability of the compressive rate and recovery rate against the repeated use of the pillows, duck feather is in the highest grade, panya is the lowest grade and the others are graded between two.

  • The article presents the statistical method of grouping the results of the compressive strength of concrete in continuous production. It describes the method of dividing the series of compressive strength results into batches of statistically stable strength parameters at specific time intervals, based on the standardized concept of "concrete family". The article presents the examples of calculations made for two series of concrete strength results, from which sets of decreased strength parameters were separated. When assessing the quality of concrete elements and concrete road surfaces, the principal issue is the control of the compressive strength parameters of concrete. Large quantities of concrete mix manufactured in a continuous way should be subject to continuous control. Standardized approach to assessing the concrete strength proves to be insufficient because it does not allow for the detection of subsets of the decreased strength results, which in turn makes it impossible to make adjustments to the concrete manufacturing process and to identify particular product or area on site with decreased concrete strength. In this article two independent methods of grouping the test results of concrete with statistically stable strength parameters were proposed, involving verification of statistical hypothesis based on statistical tests: Student's t-test and Mann - Whitney - U test.
