While extensive efforts have been made in the past to develop finite element models (FEMs) for concrete-filled steel tubular columns (CFSTCs), these models may not be suitable to be used in some cases, especially in view of the utilisation of high strength steel and high strength concrete. A method is presented herein to predict the complete stress-strain curve of concrete subjected to tri-axial compressive stresses caused by axial load coupled with lateral pressure due to the confinement action in square and rectangular CFSTCs with normal and high strength materials. To evaluate the lateral pressure exerted on the concrete in square and rectangular shaped columns, an accurately developed FEM which incorporates the effects of initial local imperfections and residual stresses using the commercial program ABAQUS is adopted. Subsequently, an extensive parametric study is conducted herein to propose an empirical equation for the maximum average lateral pressure, which depends on the material and geometric properties of the columns. The analysis parameters include the concrete compressive strength ($f^{\prime}_c=20-110N/mm^2$), steel yield strength ($f_y=220-850N/mm^2$), width-to-thickness (B/t) ratios in the range of 15-52, as well as the length-to-width (L/B) ratios in the range of 2-4. The predictions of the behaviour, ultimate axial strengths, and failure modes are compared with the available experimental results to verify the accuracy of the models developed. Furthermore, a design model is proposed for short square and rectangular CFSTCs. Additionally, comparisons with the prediction of axial load capacity by using the proposed design model, Australian Standard and Eurocode 4 code provisions for box composite columns are carried out.
For this study, SM45C steel rods using generally for power transmission shafts and machine components was selected and welded by butt-GMAW method. And then it was studied about estimation of fatigue strength and the region of infinite life by Haigh diagram using Goodman's equation. Fatigue strength in weld zone presents highly in order of the boundary between deposited metal zone and heat affected zone, deposited metal zone, heat affected zone. This result agrees with distribution of hardness in weld zone. Fatigue strength in base metal zone presents highly compared with weld zone in low cycles between $10^4$ cycles and $10^6$cycles, but it presents the lowest fatigue strength on the order of heat affected zone in the vicinity of $10^6$cycles. It is the result that the first high compressive residual stress distributed by drawing process of the steel rods is released and the base metal is softened by alternating stresses. The region of infinite life by Haigh diagram presents highly in order of the boundary between deposited metal zone and heat affected zone, deposited metal zone, heat affected zone. From this results, it is demanded that the stress for safety design of machine components using SM45C butt-welded steel rods must be selected in the region of the lowest infinite life of heat affected zone.
A relatively new non-traditional finishing process called Abrasive Flow Machining(AFM) is being used to deburr, polish and radius workpiece or produce compressive residual stresses by flowing an abrasive-laden viscoelastic compound across the surface to be machined. This paper presents the effects of AFM on surfaces of tool steel produced by EDM and W-EDM. Using AFM, white layer produced by EDM is erased almost equally and the amount of metal removal is significantly affected the initally machined surface condition of workpiece. The dimension of workiece is enlarged and its surface roughness is improved as AFM time is increased. The optimal AFM time can be established from the experimental results. It is considered that the grinding method lide AFM is useful to grind complex or slim geometry of workpiece even. Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) was used to study the surface characteristics of the workpiece before and after AFM.
In this study, to improve the effect of the surface treatment, the shape design of shot ball is proposed. The fatigue effects of shot peening by the cut wire shot ball and the rounded cut wire shot ball are compared. The rotary bending and tensile fatigue tests are conducted on a spring steel to evaluate fatigue lives. The residual compressive stresses by the rounded cut wire shot ball is higher than by the rounded cut wire shot ball. This consequently increase the fatigue life and the reliability of surface treatment. Thus, to obtain optimum, repeatable and reliable shot peening effect the shape of the shot ball must be round.
Cold spray (Cold gas dynamic spray, kinetic spray) is the latest spray coating process that is known as solid state deposition process. In cold spray, inert gases (typically nitrogen and helium) accelerate powder particles prior to impact onto the substrate. Accelerating particles start to deposit onto the substrate after reaching certain critical velocities depending on the coating materials and substrate. Since process gas temperatures are kept below to melting temperature of the coating materials, it is possible to spray temperature sensitive materials such as copper and titanium, nanocrystal materials, and amorphous metals without affecting the phase change and oxide formation. It is also possible to deposit thick coatings because cold spray coatings present compressive residual stresses. This ability to deposit thick coatings is suitable to repair or rebuild parts as an additive manufacturing process. In this presentation, cold spray is introduced and compared to other additive manufacturing processes such as laser and electron beam based processes. It is also presented some applications especially in the view point of additive manufacturing process.
1. The crack is inifiated at a toe notch and reptured for the skip and continuous welding. 2. Fatigue life of continuous welding is greater than that of skip welding and fatigue life of 2pad continuous welding appears 1.7 times more than that of pad continuous welding. 3. For the skip and continuous welding, fatigue than that of welding materials appears shorter than that of welding materials because of the effect of plastic strain and compressive residual stresses at the crack tip, which are generated by the over loading. 4. Inter-relationship between da/dN-ΔK and delayed phenomenon increases linearly at the state growth area of heat effect section for the skip and continuous welding.
The anisotropy in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the in-plane and out-of-plane of 3-dimensional thick composite structures induces residual stresses and the large void content due to insufficient compaction of fabric composites, which results in low interlaminar strengths. In order to reduce the through thickness CTE and the void content, in this work, carbon fabric phenolic laminates were compacted by pressure generated by autoclave and a compressive jig, from which the through-thickness CTEs and the void contents were measured. From the measurement, it was found that the through-thickness CTE and the void content had different characteristics from ordinary composites due to gas produced during the cure reaction of phenolic resin.
Nanocrystalline TiN films were deposited on Si(100) substrate using asymmetric pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering. We investigated the growing behavior and the structural properties of TiN films with change of duty cycle and pulsed frequency. Grain size of TiN films were decreased from 87.2 nm to 9.8 nm with decrease of duty cycle. The $2{\theta}$ values for (111) and (200) crystallographic planes of the TiN films were also decreased with decrease of duty cycle. This shift in $2{\theta}$ could be attributed to compressive stress in the TiN coatings. Thus, the change of plasma parameter has a strong influence not only on the microstructure but also on the residual stresses of TiN films.
A simple analytical and finite element(FE) models are used to study the tensile properties of Al matrix composite with continuous TiNi fibers. The effects of residual stresses caused by the shape momory effects have been compared for various mechanical behaviors as a function of fiber volume fraction and degree of pre-strain and fiber configurations. It is found that both the back stress in the Al matrix induced by stiffness of TiNi fibers and the compressive stress in the matrix are caused of the strengthening mechanisms. Both theoretical and analytical results show quite good agreement and are closed to the experimental data except in high volume content.
