Homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) combustion is an advanced technique for reducing the hazardous nitrogen oxide(NOx) and particulate matter(PM) in a diesel engine. NOx could be reduced by achieving lean homogeneous mixture resulting in combustion temperature. PM could be also reduced by eliminating fuel-rich zones which exist in conventional diesel combustion. However previous researches have reported that power-output of HCCI engine is limited by the high intensive knock and misfiring. In an attempt to extend the upper load limit for HCCI operation, supercharging in combination with Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) has been applied: supercharging to increase the power density and EGR to control the combustion phase. The test was performed in a single cylinder engine operated at 1200 rpm. Boost pressures of 1.1 and 1.2 bar were applied. High EGR rates up to 45% were supplied. Most of fuel was injected at early timing to make homogeneous mixture. Small amount of fuel injection was followed near TDC to assist ignition. Results showed increasing boost pressure resulted in much higher power-output. Optimal EGR rate influenced by longer ignition delay and charge dilution simultaneously was observed.
Modeling of biodiesel combustion on compression ignition engine was conducted by using the KIVA3v-Release 2 code coupled with Chemkin chemistry solver2. In order to calculate the chemical kinetics of combustion of biodiesel, a reduced mechanism of methyl decanoate and methyl 9-decanoate was used. It is composed of 123 species and 394 reactions. Also, the experiments were performed on a single-cylinder engine. The simulation results agreed well with experiments results. And soot concentrations of biodiesel were lower than those of diesel.
In recently, studies concerned to the diesel engine uses a natural gas as a fuel oil whose infra has been built already was approached to PCCI or HCCI with keeping a high thermal efficiency and reducing NOx and PM have been researching actively in normally single cylinder. An ignition source is required to bum the natural gas by a spark plug in gasoline engines, due to a higher auto-ignition temperature of natural gas. Then gas oil and DME were introduced as the ignition source. In this study as basic data for practical use of natural gas PCCI and HCCI engines, combustion characteristics and emission characteristics on 4-cylinders natural gas PCCI and HCCI engines with gas oil and DME as ignition sources were analyzed and the engine load range that is main object for practical use of PCCI and HCCI engines was made clearly by empirical experiment.

The effect of injector geometries including the injection angle and number of nozzle holes on homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine combustion has been investigated in an automotive-size single-cylinder diesel engine. The HCCI engine has advantages of simultaneous reduction of PM and NOx emissions by achieving the spatially homogenous distribution of diesel fuel and air mixture, which results in no fuel-rich zones and low combustion temperature. To make homogeneous mixture in a direct-injection diesel engine, the fuel is injected at early timing. The early injection guarantees long ignition delay period resulting in long mixing period to form a homogeneous mixture. The wall-impingement of the diesel spray is a serious problem in this type of application. The impingement occurs due to the low in-cylinder density and temperature as the spray penetrates too deep into the combustion chamber. A hole-type injector (5 holes) with smaller angle ($100^{\circ}$) than the conventional one ($150^{\circ}$) was applied to resolve this problem. The multi-hole injector (14 holes) was also tested to maximize the atomization of diesel fuel. The macroscopic spray structure was visualized in a spray chamber, and the spray penetration was analyzed. Moreover, the effect of injector geometries on the power output and exhaust gases was tested in a single-cylinder diesel engine. Results showed that the small injection angle minimizes the wall-impingement of diesel fuel that results in high power output and low PM emission. The multi-hole injector could not decrease the spray penetration at low in-cylinder pressure and temperature, but still showed the advantages in atomization and premixing.
The purpose of the present work is to investigate the effect of gasoline-premixing on a combustion and emissions characteristics in a compression ignition engine. For studying combustion characteristics, a combustion pressure and rate of heat release (ROHR) were measured using a single-cylinder DI compression ignition engine with a common-rail injection system and premixed fuel injection system. In addition, exhaust emissions characteristics were studied using emission analyzers and smoke meter. The experimental results showed that the case of gasoline-premixing had longer ignition delay and lower combustion pressure compared to the cases of diesel direct injection. Furthermore, premixed gasoline-air mixture reduced NOx emissions due to low peak of ROHR.

In this study, a feasibility test of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) compression ignition (CI) engine has been carried out to study the effectiveness of cetane enhancing additive: Di-tertiary-butyl peroxide (DTBP). Performance and emissions characteristics of a CI engine fuelled with DTBP blended LPG fuel were examined. Also, the effect of EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) on the combustion and emissions characteristics has been investigated. Results showed that stable engine operation over a wide range of the engine loads was possible. Exhaust emissions measurements showed that hydrocarbon were decreased with the blended fuel at enhancing cetane number. Furthermore, the combustion stability of LPG with a cetane number improver was equivalent to that of commercial Diesel fuel. Increasing the EGR rate leads to deteriorate the IMEP (indicated mean effective pressure) and increase the ignition delay. It was found that the exhaust emissions with the EGR resulted in a very large reduction in nitrogen oxides at the expense of higher THC and CO emissions. Considering the results of engine performance and exhaust emissions, LPG blended fuel of enhancing cetane number could be used as an alternative fuel for diesel in a CI engine.

This paper describes the characteristics of n-Butane fuel for the homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine for a new concept. HCCI engines are being considered as a future alternative for diesel and gasoline engines. From the experimental observations, the effect of n-Butane fuel in HCCI engine on CO, HC and NOx are analysed. The objective of this paper is to clear the effects of equivalence ratio and inlet temperature with n-Butane on the HCCI. For this purpose, a 4-cylinder, compression ignition engine was converted into a HCCI engine This work has been run with n-butane fuel at a constant speed.
This paper investigates the combustion and emission characteristics of a compression ignition engine fueled with neat and blended Shell's gas-to-liquid (GTL) fuel, which was derived from natural gas through the Fischer-Tropsch process. The experiments were conducted in a 6-cylinder DI diesel engine with pump timing settings of $6^{\circ},\;9^{\circ}\;and\;12^{\circ}$crank angle before TDC over ECE R49 and US 13-mode cycles separately and compared to a conventional diesel fuel. The results show that GTL exhibited almost the same power and torque output, improved fuel economy and effective thermal efficiency. It was found that GTL displayed lower peak in-cylinder combustion pressure and maximum heat release rate (HRR), the timings of the peak pressure and the maximum HRR were generally delayed, and the combustion durations were almost equivalent for diesel and GTL under the same speed-load condition. The results also indicate that, compared to diesel fuel, GTL blends showed a trend forward decreasing four regulated emissions simultaneously and a higher GTL fraction in blends contributing to further reductions in the emissions. In particular and on average, neat GTL significantly reduced HC, CO, NOx and PM by 16.4%, 17.8%, 18.3% and 32.4%, respectively, for all cases.
HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) combustion is an advanced combustion process explained as a homogeneously premixed charge of a fuel where air is admitted into the cylinder and compression ignited. It has possibility to reduce NOx by spontaneous auto-ignition at multiple points that allows very lean combustion resulting in low combustion temperatures. Particulate matters (PM) could be also reduced by the homogeneous combustion and no fuel-rich zones. Injection timing is extremely advanced to achieve homogeneous charge where a diesel fuel could not be vaporized sufficiently due to low pressure and low temperature condition. Also the over-penetration could be a severe problem. The small injection angle and multi-hole injectors were applied to solve these problems. Dimethyl ether (DME) as an altenative fuel was also applied to relive the bad vaporization problem associated with early injection of diesel fuel. Neat DME has a very high cetane rating and high vapor pressure. Contained oxygen reduces soot during the combustion. Experimental result shows DME can be easily operated in an HCCI engine. PM shows almost zero value and NOx is reduced more than 90% compared to direct-injection diesel engine operating mode but problem of early ignition needs more investigation.
In this work, in-cylinder pressure measurements and high-speed direct imaging of the flame were performed in an optically accessible single cylinder diesel engine with premixed charge compression ignition combustion and a narrow injection angle. The results show that the frequency ranges of pressure ringing were 8.35 to 9 kHz and 12..2 to 13.1 kHz. The frequencies of the flame movement were shown as 8.7 kHz and 13 kHz. It was found that there is a direct relationship between the pressure ringing and the flame movement.
