In previous work[1], each codeblock is coded using a context which is adaptively selected from three kinds of scanning directions after 3D DWT. But some subbands still have correlations among the coefficients in horizontal, vertical or temporal direction. In this paper, we propose a new 3D DWT-based video compression technique in which the difference of coefficients is calculated in one of three directions for every codeblocks and coded by a context adaptively selected for each codeblock. Experimental results show that the proposed compression technique outperforms measurably and visually compared to the conventional DWT-based techniques.
In this work a new method for on-line scene segmentation is developed. In remote sensing a scene is represented by the pixel-oriented features. It is possible to reduce data redundancy by an unsupervised segment-feature extraction process, where the segment-features, rather than the pixelfeatures, are used for multispectral scene representation. The algorithm partitions the observation space into exhaustive set of disjoint segments. Then, pixels belonging to each segment are characterized by segment features. Illustrative examples are presented, and the performance of features is investigated. Results show an average compression more than 25, the classification performance is improved for all classes, and the CPU time required for classification is reduced by the same factor.
In recent years, one-dimensional (1D) magnetic nanostructures, such as magnetic nanorods and chains of magnetic nanoparticles have received great attentions due to the breadth of applications. Especially, magnetic nanorods has been opened an area of active research and applications in medicine, sensors, optofluidics, magnetic swimming, and microrheology since they possess the unique magnetic and geometric features. This study focuses on the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of an infinitely long crystal ${\beta}-Fe_2O_3$ nanorod. To elucidate the structural properties and dynamics behavior of ${\beta}-Fe_2O_3$ nanorods, MD simulation is a powerful technique. The structural properties such as equation of state and radial distribution function of bulk ${\beta}-Fe_2O_3$ are performed by lattice dynamics (LD) simulations. In this work, we consider three main mechanisms affecting on deformation characteristics of a ${\beta}-Fe_2O_3$ nanorod: 1) temperature, 2) the rate of mechanical compression, and 3) the rate of mechanical torsion.
Digital watermarking has been considered as an important technique to protect the copyright of digital content. It is essential that a watermark embedded in a still or moving image resists against various attacks ranging from compression, filtering to cropping. In particular, as JPEG is a dominant still image compression standard for Internet applications, digital watermarking methods that are robust against the JPEG compression are especially required. Most digital watermarking methods proposed so far work by modulating pixels/coefficients without considering the quality level of JPEG, which renders watermarks readily removable. In this paper, we proposed a new digital watermarking method as follows. For providing the robustness against JPEG, the quality level of JPEG is used as parameter on watermarking so as to compute the loss of image caused by JPEG compression and we compute the difference of an original image resulted from JPEG compression. Also in proposed method, we compute the visual components that are derived from the information of edge within image and consideration of brightness discrimination which is one of human visual system's properties. Thus, we proposed new watermarking scheme that after constructing a watermark by considering the loss of image resulted from JPEG compression and visual components derived from the human visual system, the watermark is embedded into the image.
The Brazilian test has been widely used to determine the indirect tensile strength of rock, concrete and other brittle materials. The basic assumption for the calculation formula of Brazilian tensile strength is that the elastic moduli of rock are the same both in tension and compression. However, the fact is that the elastic moduli in tension and compression of most rocks are different. Thus, the formula of Brazilian tensile strength under the assumption of isotropy is unreasonable. In the present study, we conducted Brazilian tests on flat disk-shaped rock specimens and attached strain gauges at the center of the disc to measure the strains of rock. A tension-compression bi-modular model is proposed to interpret the data of the Brazilian test. The relations between the principal strains, principal stresses and the ratio of the compressive modulus to tensile modulus at the disc center are established. Thus, the tensile and compressive moduli as well as the correct tensile strength can be estimated simultaneously by the new formulas. It is found that the tensile and compressive moduli obtained using these formulas were in well agreement with the values obtained from the direct tension and compression tests. The formulas deduced from the Brazilian test based on the assumption of isotropy overestimated the tensile strength and tensile modulus and underestimated the compressive modulus. This work provides a new methodology to estimate tensile strength and moduli of rock simultaneously considering tension-compression bi-modularity.
This paper describes the work performed by computer simulation to achieve a satisfactory method of predicting the short circuit withstand strength of transformer which, may be too big for test due to physical or economic reasons. In fact, the windings of power transformer are subjected to extremely severe stresses under short-circuit condition. From our work, however, were computed such stresses as buckling, tending and compression occurring in transformer windings.

The aims of this study are to evaluate the application on the stress-strain behavior of granite Soil using Lade's double work hardening constitutive model based on the theories of elasticity and plasticity. From two different sites of construction work, two disturbed and compacted weathered granite samples which are different in partical size and degree of weathering respectively were obtained. The specimen employed were sampled at Iksan and Pochon in order to predict the constitutive model. Using the computer program based on the regression analysis, 11 soil parameters for the model were determined from the simple tests such as an isotropic compression-expansion test and a series of drained conventional triaxial tests. In conclusion, it is shown that Lade's double work hardening model gives the good applicability for processing of stress-strain, work-hardening, work-softening and soil dilatancy. Therefore, this model in its present form is applicable to the compacted decomposed granite soil.
Unconfined compression test (UCT) is widely conducted in laboratories to evaluate the mechanical behavior of frozen soils. However, its results are sensitive to the initial conditions of sample creation by freezing as well as the end-surface conditions during loading of the specimen into the apparatus for testing. This work compared ice samples prepared by three-dimensional and one-dimensional freezing. The latter created more-homogenous ice samples containing fewer entrapped air bubbles or air nuclei, leading to relatively stable UCT results. Three end-surface conditions were compared for UCT on ice specimens made by one-dimensional freezing. Steel disc cap with embedded rubber was found most appropriate for UCT. Three frozen materials (ice, frozen sand, and frozen silt) showed different failure patterns, which were classified as brittle failure and ductile failure. Ice and frozen sand showed strain-softening, while frozen silt showed strain-hardening. Subsequent investigation considered the influence of fines content on the unconfined compression behavior of frozen soil mixtures with fines contents of 0-100%. The mixtures showed a brittle-to-ductile transition of failure patterns at 10%-20% fines content.
This paper describes the homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine for a new concept. HCCI engines are being considered as a future alternative for diesel and gasoline engines. HCCI engines have the potential for high indicated thermal efficiency under part load and very low NOx emissions. The objective of this paper is to clear the effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate on the HCCI. For this purpose, a 4-cylinder, compression ignition engine was converted into a HCCI engine This work has been run with propane and butane fuels at a constant speed.
The main objective of this study is to examine the sensitivity of calibration curves of FEA of ring compression test to frictional shear factor. Ring compression test has been investigated by measuring dimensional changes at different positions of ring specimen and they include the changes in internal diameter at the middle and top section of the specimen, outer diameter at the middle and top section, surface expansion at the top surface, respectively. Initial ring geometries employed in analysis maintain a fixed ratio of 6 : 3 : 2, i.e. outer diameter : inner diameter : thickness of the ring specimen, which is generally known as 'standard' specimen. A rigid plastic material for different work-hardening characteristics has been modeled for simulations using rigid-plastic finite element code. Analyses have been performed within a definite range of friction as well as over whole range of friction to show different sensitivities to the interfacial friction for different ranges of friction. The results of investigation in this study have been summarized in terms of a dimensionless gradient. It has been known from the results that the dimensional changes at different positions of ring specimen show different linearity and sensitivity to the frictional condition on the contact surface.
