  • This paper presents a method of adaptive image enhancement with dynamic range compression and contrast enhancement. The dynamic range compression is to adaptively enhance the dark area using illumination component of DCT compression block. The contrast enhancement is to modify the image contrast using retinex theory that uses the HVS properties. The block artifacts and other noises, caused by processing in the compression domain, were removed by after processing.

  • In order to achieve fast computational speed with good visual quality of output video, we propose a frequency domain based new fractal video compression scheme. Normalized cross correlation is used to find the structural self similar domain block for the input range block. To increase the searching speed, cross correlation is implemented in the frequency domain using FFT with one computational operation for all the domain blocks instead of individual block wise calculations. The encoding time is further minimized by applying rotation and reflection DFT properties to the IFFT of zero padded range blocks. The energy of overlap small size domain blocks is pre-computed for the entire reference frame and retaining the energies of the overlapped search window portion of previous adjacent block. Quadtree decompositions are obtained by using domain block motion compensated prediction error as a threshold to control the further partitions of the block. It provides a better level of adaption to the scene contents than fixed block size approach. The result shows that, on average, the proposed method can raise the encoding speed by 48.8 % and 90 % higher than NHEXS and CPM/NCIM algorithms respectively. The compression ratio and PSNR of the proposed method is increased by 15.41 and 0.89 dB higher than that of NHEXS on average. For low bit rate videos, the proposed algorithm achieve the high compression ratio above 120 with more than 31 dB PSNR.

  • The ability to perform the same operations in the transform domain as in the spatial domain is important for efficient image transmission through a channel. We perform image resizing, which includes magnifying and reducing the size, in the discrete cosine transform(DCT) domain and the effects of the transform domain approach are analyzed in the corresponding spatial domain. Based on this analysis, the two resizing algorithms are proposed. The first one further compresses the images encoded by the compression standard by reducing the size before compression, and the other reduces the loss of information while maintaining the conventional compression rate. Because of its compatibility with standard codec, these algorithms can be easily embedded in JPEG and MPEG codecs, which are widely used for the purpose of image storage and transmission. Experimental results show a reduction of about half the bit size with similar image quality and about a 2- or 3-dB quality improvements in the similar compression rate.

  • The demand for handling images in digital form has increased dramatically in recent years. Digital image compression is required to store and transmit mass information in different from general information. JPEG(Joint Photographic Experts Group) committee founded by CCITT and ISO is define the still-image standard compression/restoration algorithm. JPEG is proposed the standard of grayscale and color still-image compression/restoration. In the image quality, JPEG is applicable to the various applications in which compression is able to from 1/10 to 1/50 without the visible obstacle. In this paper, we proposed that the proposed method enhance the compression ratio which is reducing the higher frequency in order to increasing the spatial redundancy in the image. The proposed method is using the low pass filter in order to reducing the higher frequency. The low-pass filters are using the median filter and convolution filter in the spatial domain, FFT filter in the frequency domain. We acquired the additive compression ratio reducing the higher frequency using the low-pass filter.

  • Cryptographic hash functions reduce inputs of arbitrary or very large length to a short string of fixed length. All hash function designs start from a compression function with fixed length inputs. The compression function itself is designed from scratch, or derived from a block cipher or a permutation. The most common procedure to extend the domain of a compression function in order to obtain a hash function is a simple linear iteration; however, some variants use multiple iterations or a tree structure that allows for parallelism. This paper presents a survey of 17 extenders in the literature. It considers the natural question whether these preserve the security properties of the compression function, and more in particular collision resistance, second preimage resistance, preimage resistance and the pseudo-random oracle property.

  • Digital image watermarking techniques have been studied in various fields in order to protect the copyright of multimedia contents mostly composed by images. JPEG compression is a representative copyright attack for image watermarking. The CRT-based watermarking methods in DCT domain have been studied, because these are robust for JPEG compression attack. In this paper, we propose a new method with improved performance compared with the existing CRT based methods in DCT domain. The proposed method selects the DCT block according to the denseness at the watermark insertion phase, and iteratively adjust the CRT Conditional coefficients at the watermark extraction. This paper shows that it is more robust for the JPEG compression attacks through experimental results.

  • The general fractal image compression provides a high compression rate, but it requires a large encoding time. In order to overcome this disadvantage, many researchers have introduced various methods that reduce the total number of domain blocks considering their block similarities or control the number of searching domain block depending on its distribution. In this paper, we propose a method that can reduce the number of searching domain blocks employing the variance coherence of intensity values and also the number of range blocks requiring the domain block search through the classification of range blocks. This proposed method effectively reduces the encoding time and also a negligible drop of the quality as compared with the previous methods requiring the search of all range blocks.

  • Motion estimation (ME) algorithms supporting quarter-pixel accuracy have been recently introduced to retain detailed motion information for high quality of video in the state-of-the-art video compression standard of H.264/AVC. Conventional sub-pixel ME algorithms in the spatial domain are faced with a common problem of computational complexity because of embedded interpolation schemes. This paper proposes a low-complexity sub-pixel motion estimation algorithm in the transform domain utilizing shifting matrix. Simulations are performed to compare the performances of spatial-domain ME algorithms and transform-domain ME algorithms in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and the number of bits per frame. Simulation results confirm that the transform-domain approach not only improves the video quality and the compression efficiency, but also remarkably alleviates the computational complexity, compared to the spatial-domain approach.

  • In this paper, we designed one-dimensional VLSI array with high speed processing in Fractal image compression. fractal image compression algorithm partitions the original image into domain blocks and range blocks then compresses data using the self similarity of blocks. The image is partitioned into domain block with 50% overlapping. Domain block is reduced by averaging the original image to size of range block. VLSI array is trying to search the best matching between a range block and a large amount of domain blocks. Adjacent domain blocks are overlapped, so we can improve of each block's processing speed using the reuse of the overlapped data. In our experiment, proposed VLSI array has about 25% speed up by adding the least register, MUX, and DEMUX to the PE.

  • In this paper, we proposed multispectral image compression method using CIP (classified inter-channel prediction) and SVQ (selective vector quantization) in wavelet domain. First, multispectral image is wavelet transformed and classified into one of three classes considering reflection characteristics of the subband with the lowest resolution. Then, for a reference channel which has the highest correlation with other channels, the variable VQ is performed in the classified intra-channel to remove spatial redundancy. For other channels, the CIP is performed to remove spectral redundancy. Finally, the prediction error is reduced by performing SVQ. Experiments are carried out on a multispectral image. The results show that the proposed method reduce the bit rate at higher reconstructed image quality and improve the compression efficiency compared to conventional method.
