Ni coated $Al_2O_3$ composite was successfully Prepared by the electroless deposition Process. The average size of Ni particles coated on the $Al_2O_3$ matrix powder was about 20 nm. It was hard to find any reaction compound as an impurity at interface between $Al_2O_3$ and Ni particles after sintering. The characterization of microstructure crystal structure and fracture behavior of the sintered body were investigated using XRD, TEM and Victors hardness tester, and compared with those of the sintered $Al_2O_3$ monolithic body. Many dislocations were observed in the Ni phase due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between $Al_2O_3$ and Ni phase, and no observed microcracks at their $Al_2O_3$ and Ni interface. In the $Al_2O_3$/Ni composite, the main fracture mode showed a mixed fracture with intergranular and transgranuluar type having some ,surface roughness. The fracture toughness was slightly increased due to the plastic deformation mechanism of Ni phase in the $Al_2O_3$/Ni composite.
Single walled carbon nanotubes were mixed with various metal powders by mechanical ball milling and sintered by spark plasma sintering processes. Two compositional (0.1 and 1 vol%) of the single walled carbon nanotubes were dispersed onto the pure aluminum, 5052 aluminum alloy, pure titanium, Ti6Al4Vanadium alloy, pure copper, and stainless steel 316L. Each composite powders were spark plasma sintered at $600^{\circ}C$ and well synthesized regardless of the matrices. Vickers hardness of the composite materials was measured and they exhibited higher values regardless of the carbon nanotubes composition than those of the pure materials. Moreover, single walled carbon nanotubes reinforced copper matrix composites showed highest enhancement between the other metal matrices system. We believe that low energy mechanical ball milling and spark plasma sintering processes are useful tool for fabricating of the carbon nanotubes-reinforced various metal matrices composite materials. The single walled carbon nanotubes-reinforced various metal matrices composite materials could be used as an engineering parts in many kind of industrial fields such as aviation, transportation and electro technologies etc. However, detail strengthening mechanism should be carefully investigated.
Mullite-PSZ composite was prepared by sol-gel method using $Al(sec-OC_4H_9)_3,\;Si(OC_2H_5)_4,\;ZrOCl_2\;8H_2O\;and\;Y_2O_3$. The sinterability ana mechanical properties of powder compacts sintered at $1,650^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs were investigated for various PSZ contents. In result Al-Si spinel formed at $980^{\circ}C$ from amorphous dried gel, and zirconia as well as mullite crystal formed above $1,200^{\circ}C$. The sintered body was densified to $97{\sim}98%$ except the specimen containing 25vol% PSZ which showed the relative density of about 95% obtained by sintering at $1,650^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. The flexural strength of the sintered body was a maximum value of 290 MPa in 20 vol% PSZ, which was also considerably larger than the value of 200 MPa without PSZ. The value of the fracture toughness increased linearly with increase of PSZ content and showed a maximum value of $4.3MPam^{1/2}$ in 25 vol% PSZ, Namely this value was remarkably larger than the $value(2.6MPam^{1/2})$ of pure mullite without PSZ.
The bi-materials with Al-Mg alloy and its composites reinforced with SiC and $Al_2O_3$ particles were prepared by conventional powder metallurgy method. The A1-5 wt%Mg and composite mixtures were compacted under $150{\sim}450\;MPa$, and then the mixtures compacted under 400 MPa were sintered at $773{\sim}1173K$ for 5h. The obtained bi-materials with Al-Mg/SiCp composite showed the higher relative density than those with $Al-Mg/Al_2O_3$ composite after compaction and sintering. Based on the results, the bi-materials compacted under 400 MPa and sintered at 873K for 5h were used for mechanical tests. In the composite side of bi-materials, the SiC particles were densely distributed compared to the $Al_2O_3$ particles. The bi-materials with Al-Mg/SiC composite showed the higher micro-hardness than those with $Al-Mg/Al_2O_3$ composite. The mechanical properties were evaluated by the compressive test. The bi-materials revealed almost the same value of 0.2% proof stress with Al-Mg alloy. Their compressive strength was lower than that of Al-Mg alloy. Moreover, impact absorbed energy of bi-materials was smaller than that of composite. However, the bi-materials with Al-Mg/SiCp composite particularly showed almost similar impact absorbed energy to $Al-Mg/Al_2O_3$ composite. From the observation of microstructure, it was deduced that the bi-materials was preferentially fractured through micro-interface between matrix and composite in the vicinity of macro-interface.
Fe-TiC composite was fabricated from Fe and TiC powders by high-energy milling and subsequent spark-plasma sintering. The microstructure, particle size and phase of Fe-TiC composite powders were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction to evaluate the effect of milling conditions on the size and distribution of TiC particles in Fe matrix. TiC particle size decreased with milling time. The average TiC particle size of 38 nm was obtained after 60 minutes of milling at 1000 rpm. Prepared Fe-TiC powder mixture was densified by spark-plasma sintering. Sintered Fe-TiC compacts showed a relative density of 91.7~96.2%. The average TiC particle size of 150 nm was observed from the FE-SEM image. The microstructure, densification behavior, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness of Fe-TiC sintered compact were investigated.

Several boride sintered bodies such as $TiB_2$, $ZrB_2$, and $SiB_6$ were previously reported. In the present study, the sinterability and physical properties of chromium boride $(CrB_2)$ containing chromium carbide $(Cr_3C_2)$ sintered bodies were investigated in order to determine its new advanced material. The samples were sintered at desired temperature for 1 hour in vacuum under a pressure by hot pressing. The relative density of sintered bodies was measured by Archimedes' method. The relative densities of $CrB_2$ addition of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mass% $Cr_3C_2$ composites were 92 to 95%. The Vickers hardness of the $CrB_2$ with 10 and 15 mass% $Cr_3C_2$ composites were about 14 and 15 GPa at room temperature, respectively. The Vickers hardness at high temperature of the $CrB_2$ addition of 10 mass% $Cr_3C_2$ composite decreased with increasing measurement temperature. The Vickers hardness at 1273 K of the sample was 6 GPa. The Vickers hardness of $CrB_2$ addition of $Cr_3C_2$ composites was higher than monolithic $CrB_2$ sintered body. The powder X-ray diffraction analysis detected CrB and $B_4C$ phases in $CrB_2$ containing $Cr_3C_2$ composites.
Y-TZP/mullite composites were prepared by the infiltration of Y-TZP precursor into partially reaction-sintered mullite. The addition of Y-TZP(~7.2 wt%) increased the bend strength(207 MPa), fracture toughness(4.6MPa.m1/2) and Vickers microhardness(853kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$) of the uninfiltrated mullite sintered at 162$0^{\circ}C$ for 10h by more than 75, 70 and 105%, respectively. Residual alumina-rich glass was observed at a mullite/mullite junction, due to the mullitization reaction of silica melt with crystalline $\alpha$-Al2O3 during a final sintering. Although ZrO2 inclusions improved the final sintered density of mullite they did not effectively prevent its grain growth.
This analyzed a Young's modulus (E), a thermal expansion coefficient (TEC, ${\beta}$) and a thermal conductivity (${\kappa}$) of the material with simple cubic particulate inclusion using two model structures: a parallel structure and a series structure of laminated layers. The derived ${\beta}$ equations were applied to calculate the ${\beta}$ value of the W-MgO system. The accuracy was higher for the series model structure than for the parallel model structure. Young's moduli ($E_c$) of sintered porous alumina compacts were theoretically related to the development of neck growth of grain boundary between sintered two particles and expressed as a function of porosity. The series structure model with cubic pores explained well the increased tendency of $E_c$ with neck growth rather than the parallel structure model. The thermal conductivity of the three phase system of alumina-mullite-pore was calculated by a theoretical equation developed in this research group, and compared with the experimental results. The pores in the sintered composite were treated as one phase. The measured thermal conductivity of the composite with 0.5-25% porosity (open and closed pores) was in accordance with the theoretical prediction based on the parallel structure model.
To fabricate porous SiC-Si composites for heating element applications, both SiC powders and Si powders were mixed and sintered together. The properties of the sintered SiC-Si body were investigated as a function of SiC particle size and/or Si particle contents from 10 wt% to 40 wt%, respectively. Porous SiC-Si composites were fabricated by Si bonded reaction at a sintering temperature of $1650^{\circ}C$ for 80 min. The microstructure and phase analysis of SiC-Si composites that depend on Si particle contents were characterized using scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The electrical resistivity of SiC-Si composites was also evaluated using a 4-point probe resistivity method. The electrical resistivity of the sintered SiC-Si body sharply decreased as the amount of Si addition increased. We found that the electrical resistivity of porous SiC-Si composites is closely related to the amount of Si added and at least 20 wt% Si are needed in order to apply the SiCSi composites to the heating element.
