  • We consider the application of complex variable method to elastic problem and investigate the nonlinear effect of finite torsion of a compressible elastic composite layer. We obtain that as a result of finite deformation approach, a tube subjected to torsion decreases in radius giving rise to a “hold effect”.

Structural response of rectangular composite columns under vertical and lateral loads

  • The present study aims to determine the structural response of full scaled rectangular columns under both of vertical and lateral loads using numerical methods. In the study, the composite columns considering full concrete filled circular steel tube (FCFRST) and concrete filled double-skin rectangular steel tube (CFDSRST) section types are numerically modelled using ANSYS software. Vertical and lateral loads are applied to models to assess the structural response of the composite elements. Also similar investigations are done for reinforced concrete rectangular (RCR) columns to compare the results with those of composite elements. The analyses of the systems are statically performed for both linear and nonlinear materials. In linear static analyses, both of vertical and lateral loads are applied to models as only one step. However in nonlinear analyses, while vertical loads are applied to model as only one step, lateral loads are applied to systems as step by step. The displacement and stress changes in some critical nodes and sections and contour diagrams are reported by graphs and figures. At the end of the study, it is demonstrated that the nonlinear models reveal more accurate result then those of linear models. Also, it is highlighted that composite columns provide more and more safety, ductility compared to reinforced concrete column.

Prediction of the Torque Capacity for Tubular Adhesive Joints with Composite Adherends (복합재료 접착체를 가지는 튜브형 접합부의 토크전달능력 예측)

  • Since the performance of joints usually determines the structural efficiency of composite structures, an extensive knowledge of the behavior of adhesive joints and the related effect on joint strength is essential for design purposes. In this study, the torque capacity of adhesive joints was predicted using the combined thermal and mechanical analyses when the adherend was a composite tube. A finite element analysis was performed to evaluate residual thermal stresses developed in the joint, and mechanical s stresses in the adhesive were calculated including both the nonlinear adhesive behavior and the behavior of composite tubes. Three different joint failure modes were considered to predict joint failure: interfacial failure, adhesive bulk failure, and adherend failure. The influence of the composite adherend stacking angle on the residual thermal stresses was investigated, and how the residual thermal stresses affect the joint strength was also discussed. Finally, the predicted results were compared with experimental results available in literature.

Evaluation by Rocket Combustor of C/C Composite Cooled Structure for Combined-cycle Engine

  • In this study, the cooling performance of a C/C composite material structure with metallic cooling tubes fixed by elastic force without chemical bonding was evaluated experimentally using combustion gas in a rocket combustor. The C/C composite chamber was covered by a stainless steel outer shell to maintain its airtightness. Gaseous hydrogen as a fuel and gaseous oxygen as an oxidizer were used for the heating test. The surface of these C/C composites was maintained below 1500 K when the combustion gas temperature was about 2900 K and heat flux to the combustion chamber wall was about 9 $MW/m^2$. No thermal damage was observed on the stainless steel tubes which were in contact with the C/C composite materials. Results of the heating test showed that such a metallic-tube-cooled C/C composite structure is able to control the surface temperature as a cooling structure(also as a heat exchanger), as well as indicating the possibility of reducing the amount of the coolant even if the thermal load to the engine is high. Thus, application of the metallic-tube-cooled C/C composite structure to reusable engines such as a rocket-ramjet combined cycle engine is expected.

  • Thermal deformations and stresses due to temperature changes are the serious problems in cryogenic structures such as the torque tube in a superconducting generator, In this paper, the equations of thermal expansion coefficients expressed only by material properties and winding angles are derived for the filament wound composite tubes. The experimental results of thermal contraction of CFRP tubes are compared with those from theoretical approach. Composite tubes with optimally regulated thermal expansion coefficient are designed on the basis of the study for the torque tube in the superconducting generator with temperature distributions varying from 300K to 4.2 K. The filament winding angle of composites resisting thermal stresses properly is sought by the finite element method using layered shell elements. The results show that the composite tubes designed for the requirements in cryogenic environments can effectively cope with the thermal stress problem.

  • This paper describes the results the problem of stress calculation and optimization into a FRP(Fiber-glass Reinforced Plastic) tube crimped into a metal end-fitting. This type of assembly is used mainly is used mainly for suspension and line post insulators. Fitting strength of FRP and flange of this study is required greatly from composite insulator to important special quality. Therefore, wish to seek analysis and mechanical strength performance that follow to FRP tube and flange of top and bottom mechanical fitting.

  • In this paper, quasi-static crushing tests of composite circular tubes under axial compression load are conducted to investigate the energy absorption characteristics. Circular tubes used for this experiment are glass/epoxy (GFRP) composite tubes, which is fabricated by the filament winding method. One edge of the composite tube is chamfered to reduce the initial peak load and to prevent catastrophic failure during crushing process. Two suggested trigger mechanisms for the composite tubes are investigated. Crushing modes are mainly affected by thickness/diameter ratio, and average crushing loads are mainly affected by their cross-sections. Energy absorption characteristics vary significantly as a function of the tube geometry, trigger mechanism, t/D ratio and the cross-sectional shape.

  • Prestressed composite girder bridges with concrete infilled steel tube at negative flexural moment region takes the advantages provided due to the interactive reaction in the steel tube and concrete interface layer, enhancing local buckling resistance and the concrete strength provided by the lateral confining effect of concrete. Two beams were tested to examine ultimate behaviors of prestressed composite girder bridges subjected to negative flexural moment. The experimental observations of the Prestressed composite girder bridges subjected to positive flexural moment are investigated and compared to the numerical results obtained by sectional analysis method, and 1-D. and 3-D. finite element analysis methods.

  • In the design of bridge piers in seismic area, the ductility requirement is the most important factor. In order to enhance the seismic performance of RC columns, it is necessary to make the ductility of columns larger by covering RC columns with steel tubes or confining RC columns by arranging transverse reinforcements such as hoop ties closely. Using core steel composite columns is useful as one of the reinforcing RC columns. In this paper, quasi-static tests on concrete encased composite columns with single core steel or multiple steel elements were performed to investigate the seismic performance of the composite columns. Eight concrete-encased composite specimens were fabricated. The cross-sections of these specimens are composed of concrete-encased H-shaped structural steel columns and a concrete-encased circular tube with partial in-filled concrete. Test parameters were the amount of the transverse reinforcements, type and number of encased steel member. Through the tests, it was evaluated the ductility of SRC composite specimens. It has become clear from the test results that encased steel elements makes the deformation capacity of the columns to be larger. The displacement ductility and lateral strength of specimen with concrete-encased circular tube were indicated the biggest value.

Mechanical Properties of Al/Al2O3 Composite Fabricated by a Powder-in Sheath Rolling Method (분말시스압연법에 의해 제조된 Al/Al2O3 복합재료의 기계적 성질)

  • The powder-in sheath rolling was applied to the fabrication of $Al/Al_2O_3$ composite. A stainless steel tube with outer diameter of 12 mm and wall thickness of 1 mm was used as a sheath. Mixture of aluminum powder and $Al/Al_2O_3$ particles of which volume content was varied from 5 to 20 vol.% was filled in the tube by tap filling and then rolled to 75% reduction at ambient temperature. The re]]ed specimen was sintered at 56$0^{\circ}C$ for 0.5 hr. The $Al/Al_2O_3$ composite fabricated by the sheath rolling and subsequent sintering showed the relative density higher than 0.96. The tensile strength of the composite increased with the volume content of $Al_2O_3$ particles, and it reached a maximum of 90 MPa which is 1.5 times higher than unreinforced material. The elongation decreased with the volume content of $Al_2O_3$ particles. It is concluded that the powder-in sheath rolling is an effective method for fabrication of $Al/Al_2O_3$ composite.
