Electronic packaging involves interconnecting, powering, protecting, and cooling of semiconductor circuits fur the use in a variety of microelectronic applications. For microelectronic circuits, the main type of failure is thermal fatigue, owing to the different thermal expansion coefficients of semiconductor chips and packaging materials. Therefore, the search for matched coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of packaging materials in combination with a high thermal conductivity is the main task for developments of heat sink materials electronics, and good mechanical properties are also required. The aim of this work is to develop copper matrix composites reinforced with carbon nanofibers. The advantages of carbon nanofibers, especially the good thermal conductivity, are utlized to obtain a composite material having a thermal conductivity higher than 400 W/mK. The main challenge is to obtain a homogeneous dispersion of carbon nanofibers in copper. In this paper, a technology for obtaining a homogeneous mixture of copper and nanofibers will be presented and the microstructure and properties of consolidated samples will be discussed. In order to improve the bonding strength between copper and nanofibers, different alloying elements were added. The microstructure and the properties will be presented and the influence of interface modification will be discussed.

Aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) nanofibers were treated thermally under an ammonia ($NH_3$) gas stream balanced by nitrogen to form a thin aluminum nitride (AlN) layer on the nanofibers, resulting in the enhancement of thermal conductivity of $Al_2O_3$/epoxy nanocomposites. The micro-structural and morphological properties of the $NH_3$-assisted thermally-treated $Al_2O_3$ nanofibers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AEM), respectively. The surface characteristics and pore structures were observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Zeta-potential and $N_2$/77 K isothermal adsorptions. From the results, the formation of AlN on $Al_2O_3$ nanofibers was confirmed by XRD and XPS. The thermal conductivity (TC) of the modified $Al_2O_3$ nanofibers/epoxy composites increased with increasing treated temperatures. On the other hand, the severely treated $Al_2O_3$/epoxy composites showed a decrease in TC, resulting from a decrease in the probability of heat-transfer networks between the filler and matrix in this system due to the aggregation of nanofiber fillers.
ZnO nanofibers were electro-spun from a solution containing poly 4-vinyl phenol and Zn acetate dihydrate. The calcination process of the ZnO/PVP composite nanofibers brought forth a random network of polycrystalline wurtzite ZnO nanofibers of 30 nm to 70 nm in diameter. The electrical properties of the ZnO nanofibers were governed by the grain boundaries. To investigate possible applications of the ZnO nanofibers, their CO and $NO_2$ gas sensing responses are demonstrated. In particular, the $SnO_2$-deposited ZnO nanofibers exhibit a remarkable gas sensing response to $NO_2$ gas as low as 400 ppb. Oxide nanofibers emerge as a new proposition for oxide-based gas sensors.
Polystyrene/gold nanoparticle (PS/AuNP) composite fibers were fabricated using an electrospinning technique. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the diameters of the naphthalenethiol-capped gold nanoparticles (prior to incorporation into the PS fibers) ranged from 2 to 5 nm. UV-vis spectroscopy revealed the surface plasmon peaks of the gold nanoparticles centered at approximately 512 nm, indicating that nano-sized Au particles are well-dispersed in solution. This was consistent with the TEM observations. The electrospun nanofibers of PS/AuNP composites were approximately 60-3,000 nm in diameter. The surface morphology of the PS/AuNP composite and the dispersability of the Au nanoparticles inside of PS after electrospinning process were investigated by SEM and TEM. The thermal behavior of the pure PS and PS/AuNP nanocomposites and fibers were examined by DSC.
Well-dispersed Ag3VO4 nanoparticles @polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers were synthesized by an easily controlled, template-free method as a photo-catalyst for the degradation of methylene blue. Their structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties have been studied by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with rapid energy dispersive analysis of X-ray, photoluminescence, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The characterization procedures revealed that the obtained material is PAN nanofibers decorated by Ag3VO4 nanoparticles. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue investigated in an aqueous solution under irradiation showed 99% degradation of the dye within 75 min. Finally, the antibacterial performance of Ag3VO4 nanoparticles @PAN composite nanofibers was experimentally verified by the destruction of Escherichia coli. These results suggest that the developed inexpensive and functional nanomaterials can serve as a non-precious catalyst for environmental applications.
Cellulose nanowhisker (CNW) isolated from hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HW-BKP) using sulfuric acid hydrolysis was suspended in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and electrospun into composites nanofibers. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the CNW to be rod-like, approximately of $16.1{\pm}4.6$ nm wide and $194{\pm}61$ nm long, providing an aspect ratio of about 12, with a particle size distribution range of $662.2{\pm}301.2$ nm. Uniform and high quality CNW/PVA composite nanofibers were successfully manufactured by the electrospinning method. As the CNW loading increases, the viscosity of CNW/PVA solutions shows a minimum at 1% CNW level which subsequently results in the smallest diameter (193 nm) of electrospun nanofibers. The average diameter of the nanofibers increased up to 284 nm with increasing CNW loading. These results suggest that the electrospinning method provides a great potential of manufacturing consistent and reliable nanofibers from CNW/PVA solution for the formation of scaffolds with potentials in future application.

The development of electrospun nanofibers with improved mechanical properties is of great scientific and technological interest because of their wide-range of applications. Reinforcement of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the polymer matrix is considered as a promising strategy for substantially enhancing the mechanical properties of resulting CNTs/polymer composite mats on account of extraordinary mechanical properties of CNTs such as ultra-high Young's modulus and tensile strengths. This paper summarizes the recent developments on electrospun CNTs/polymer composite mats with an emphasis on their mechanical properties.

Electrospinning is a simple and effective process for producing nanofiber with diameter range from nanometers to micrometers which have high specific surface area. Hence, medicated nanofibers can be readily fabricated using a solution containing a mixture of a plant-extracts and a polymer. It has proved that Juniperus Chinensis can be effectively used for the prevention of UV and SLS-induced advers skin reaction such as radical production, inflammation and skin cell damage. It also found that Juniperus Chinensis has efficient ingredient of antifungal activity and house dust mite repellent effect. The fabrication of PVA nanofibers containing Juniperus Chinensis extracts by electrospinning has been studied. PVA/Juniperus Chinensis extracts composite nanofibers were produced at different Juniperus Chinensis concentrations (0.25, 0.5, 1.5 wt. %). The parameters of electrospinning including polymer contents, voltage and tip-to-collector distance (TCD) were optimized for fabrication process. The study show that 12 wt. % PVA, 10kV applied voltage and TCD 10~20 cm are the best condition to obtain uniform PVA/Juniperus Chinensis extracts composite nanofibers. Morphologies of the electrospun composite nanofiber were observed by using a field emission scanning electron microscope. It has been found that the average diameters of fibers increased by the adding of Juniperus Chinensis extracts. As the results, PVA/Juniperus Chinensis extracts composite nanofibers having a diameter in the range from 310~360 nm were successfully prepared via an electrospinning.

Nanostructured materials have attracted considerable research interest over the recent decades because of their potential applications in nanoengineering and nanotechnology. On the other hand, the developments in nanotechnology are strongly dependent on the availability of new materials with novel and engineered morphologies. Among the novel nanomaterials reported thus far, composite nanofibers (NFs) have attracted considerable attention in recent years. In particular, metal oxide NFs have great potential for the development of gas sensors. Highly sensitive and selective gas sensors can be developed by using composite NFs owing to their large surface area and abundance of grain boundaries. In composite NFs, gas sensing properties can be enhanced greatly by tailoring the conduction channel and surface properties by compositional modifications using the synergistic effects of different materials and forming heterointerfaces. This review focuses on the gas sensing properties of composite NFs synthesized by an electrospinning (ES) method. The synthesis of the composite NFs by the ES method and the sensing mechanisms involved in different types of composite NFs are presented along with the future perspectives of composite NFs.
