  • It is known that the composite material shafts using on small boats have various advantages comparing to forged steel shafts, fur examples, specific strength, fatigue strength, corrosion, etc. The analysis of the stresses and strains in the composite material shafts made by filament winding method is presented in this paper. The classical laminated plate theory is applied on the patch cut from the composite material hollow shafts. It is verified that the composite material hollow shafts of diameter 40 mm is the most optimum when the ratio of the inner diameter to the outer is 0.4 and winding angle is 45$^{\circ}$. It is also proven that the shear strain does not change seriously between 30$^{\circ}$and 60$^{\circ}$of winding angles. It is dangerous when the winding angle is over 75$^{\circ}$because the values of shear strain and stress produced on the shaft are too high so it must be avoided to wind the filament by the angle over 75$^{\circ}$.

  • The fiber reinforced composite material is widely used in the multi-industrial field because of their high specific modulus and specific strength. It has two main merits which are to cut down energy by reducing weight and to prevent explosive damage proceeding to the sudden bursting which is generated by the pressure leakage condition. Therefore, Pressure vessels using this composite material can be applied in the field such as defence industry and aerospace industry. In this paper, for nonlinear finite element analysis of E-glass/epoxy filament winding of composite vessel subjected to internal pressure, the standard interpretation model is developed by using the ANSYS with AutoLISP and ANSYS APDL languages, general commercial software, which is verified as useful characteristic of the solution. Among the modules of the system, both the process planning module for carrying out the process planning of filament wound composite pressure vessel and the autofrettage process module for obtaining higher residual stress will minimize trial and error and reduce the period for developing new products. The system can serve as a valuable system for experts and as a dependable training aid for beginners.

  • Fused deposition modeling (FDM), based on stacking a continuous filament of polymer or composite materials, is well matured and is thus widely used in additive manufacturing technology. To advance FDM-based 3D printing technology, the mechanical properties of additively manufactured composite materials must be improved. In this study, we proposed a novel FDM 3D printing process using metal wire-polymer composites, enabling enhanced mechanical properties. In addition, we developed a new type FDM filament of copper wire wrapped in nylon material for stable 3D printing without thermal damage during the printing process. After FDM printing of the copper wire-nylon composite filament, we conducted a tensile test to investigate the mechanical behavior of the printed composite materials. The experimental results confirmed that the tensile strength of the 3D-printed metal wire-polymer composites was higher than that of the conventional single polymer material. Thus, we expect that the FDM printing process developed in this study may be promising for high-load-bearing applications.

  • In this paper, quasi-static crushing tests of composite circular tubes under axial compression load are conducted to investigate the energy absorption characteristics. Circular tubes used for this experiment are glass/epoxy (GFRP) composite tubes which are fabricated by the filament winding method. One edge of the composite tube is chamfered to reduce the initial peak load and to prevent catastrophic failure during crushing process. Energy absorption characteristics vary significantly according to the constituent materials, fabrication conditions, tube geometry and test condition. In tube geometry, according as inner diameter increase, unstable crush mode is caused by local buckling of delamination, but control of the fiber orientation should help composite tubes get stable crush mode.

  • One area in which composites have been used rather extensively is for fabricating pressure vessel. These structures can be readily manufactured by filament winding, which is, as far as composite fabrication techniques are concerned, a relatively inexpensive method for producing composite structures. Unfortunately, the higher strength material and fabrication costs are not the only disadvantages of fiber-reinforced polymer composites when they are compared to metals. Additionally, these materials tend to exhibit brittle behavior. This is of particular concern when they are subjected to a low-velocity impact during routine handling a significant amount of structural damage can be introduced into the composites. The goals of this paper are to understand the impact damage behavior and identify the effect of surface coating materials on impact resistance in filament wound composite pressure vessels. For these, a series of low velocity impact tests was performed on specimens cutting from the full scale pressure vessel by the instrumented impact testing machine. The specimens are classified into two types with and without surface protective material. The visualization for impact damage is made by metallurgical microscope. Based on the impact force history and damage, the resistance parameters were employed and its validity in identifying the damage resistance of pressure vessel was reviewed. As the results, the impact resistance of the filament wound composites and its dependency on the protective material were evaluated quantitatively.

  • In this study, a micro-genetic algorithm was utilized for the optimal design of filament wound composite cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure for underwater vehicle application. The objective of the optimization was to maximize the design allowable load considering the buckling and static failure loads. A commercial finite element program, MSC.NASTRAN, was used for buckling and failure analysis. An open-source micro genetic algorithm by Carroll was modified for the optimization. The design variables are the helical winding angle and hoop layer thickness. The results of examples show that the micro genetic algorithm can be successfully applied to the optimization of filament wound cylinders with various geometries and gives better efficiency than general genetic algorithms.

  • The objective of this study is to develop and commercialize an on-board fuel storage system for CNG vehicles. A type 4 vessel is made of resin-impregnated continuous filament windings on a polyamide (PA6) liner. In particular, this study localized the PA6 liner's fabrication and development. To analyze the filament winding, a specimen test was performed, and the results were verified values obtained using finite element analysis. In this study, the filament winding and fibers were optimized for a 207 bar composite cylinder in a compressed natural gas vehicle.

  • The buckling equations of filament wound composite cylindrical shell are established. The coefficients $K_{ij}$ and $L_{ij}$ of the buckling equations are determined by solving the equations. The geometric analysis and the effective stiffness calculation for the fiber crossover and undulation region are respectively accomplished. Using the effective stiffness of the undulation region, the specific formulas of the coefficients ${K^{\prime}}_{ij}$ and ${L^{\prime}}_{ij}$ of the buckling equations are determined. Numerical examples of the buckling critical loads have been performed for the different winding angles and stacking sequences cylindrical shell designs. It can be concluded that the fiber undulation results in the less effect on the buckling critical loads $P_{cr}$. $P_{cr}$ increases with the thickness-radius ratio. The effect on $P_{cr}$ due to the fiber undulation is more obvious with the thickness-radius ratio. $P_{cr}$ decreases with the length-radius ratio. The effect on $P_{cr}$ due to the fiber undulation can be neglected when the ratio is large.

  • The filament winding method is widely used to manufacture products of fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), such as high pressure vessels, launch tubes and pipes. For reducing winding time, the method of winding by filament band which consists of several filament fibers is used. NC winding machine is used for precise winding and NC path is needed. Before filament winding, users should verify that winding path which presented by a line is appropriate by filament winding simulation. Also, the used length of each filament is different. So, if the peak filament exhausted, it causes to stop manufacturing. In this research, we developed software which visualizes 3D graphic of filament band winding path and simulates winding process on real time. And we proposed algorithm about calculation of each filament usage. We use geodesic equation for generating filament band surface and calculating the usage length of each filament.
