  • Recently, super fiber reinforced composite materials are widely used in many industries due to high mechanical properties. In this study, 2 different types of composite materials were manufactured in order to compare their mechanical properties. Carbon and Aramid fibers were used for reinforcement materials and Bisphenol-A type epoxy resin was for matrix. Two kinds of fiber-reinforced materials were manufactured by RIM(Resin Injection Molding) method. Before manufacturing composite materials, the optimal manufacturing and curing process condition were established and the ratio of reinforcement to epoxy resin was discussed. FT-IR analysis was conducted to clarify the structure of epoxy resin. Thermal and mechanical property test were also carried out. The cross-section of composite materials was observed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM).

  • Embedding viscoelastic-damping materials into composites can greatly increase the damping properties of composite structures. Usually viscoelastic-damping materials behave isotropically so that their damping properties are the same in all directions. In these days, there is a desire to develop viscoelastic-damping materials that behave orthotropically so that damping properties vary with material orientation. These orthotropic damping materials can be made by embedding rows of thin wires within the viscoelastic materials. These wires add significant directional stiffness to the damping materials. where the stiffness variation with wire orientation follows classical lamination theory. In this paper, the loss factor of composite laminate was evaluated based on Ni and Adams' theory. To investigate the effect of directional damping material, the low-velociy impact response analysis was also performed. The present analysis results show that directional damping material has a great influence on vibration and damping characteristic of composite laminate.

  • Adaptive analysis of multilayered composite and sandwich plates is carried out. The adaptive analysis is based on a finite element error form, which measures the difference between the through-the-thickness distribution of finite element displacement and the actual displacement. The region where the error-measure exceeds the prescribed admitted error value, the finite element mesh locally refined in the thickness direction using the mesh superposition technique. Several numerical tests are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the current approach for adaptive analysis of laminated plates.

  • The dispersion of carbon nanotubes in composite and their field emission superiority have been discussed. Four synthesis methods have been studied. The CNT-composite, synthesized by the combination of the chemical and mechanical dispersion routes shows superior dispersion as well as field emission characteristics as compared to other syntheses methods.

  • The properties of thermosetting resins are dependent on the degree of cure and consolidation quality. Since the consolidation process of thermosetting resin matrix fiber composites is much dependent on the viscosity of resin in the composites, in this study, the dissipation factor which is a function of viscosity was measured by the newly developed Lacomtech dielectrometry apparatus and sensors. Using the measured dissipation factors, the relationship between the dissipation factor and degree of cure with respect to environmental temperature was investigated.

  • We have investigated mechanical behaviors of composite materials containing Ni-Ti shape memory alloy(SMA) wires by performing several experimental methods. In this study, several sample specimens were fabricated in order to perform photo-elasticity tests and impact tests under various test conditions for investigating the mechanical behaviors of the SMA composite materials. From the test results, the shape memory effect of SMA in composite materials can be considered as one of possible ways in controlling crack growth in the materials.
