In this study, in-plane and out-plane compression tests of aluminum foam and honeycomb sandwich composites were carried out. Through these tests, the relationships of load-displacements were analyzed and the compression characteristics were compared with each other. The specimens were compressed with the speed of 1mm/min by using the universal testing machine. Experimental procedures were taken with photograph by the camera and load cell data were stored into computer. Test results showed that buckling was occurred at the aluminum foam core and honeycomb core according to the increase of load. In the in-plane compression test, the maximum load of aluminum foam specimen was similar with that of honeycomb sandwich. The property of honeycomb was better than that of the foam in consideration of specific gravity. In the out-plane compression test, compression maximum load of aluminum honeycomb sandwich composite was higher than that of aluminum foam sandwich composite.
The energy absorption characteristics of diamond core sandwich cylindrical columns under axial crushing process depend greatly on the amount of material which participates in the plastic deformation. Both the single-objective and multi-objective optimizations are performed for columns under axial crushing load with core thickness and helix pitch of the honeycomb core as design variables. Models are optimized by multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm to achieve maximum specific energy absorption (SEA) capacity and minimum peak crushing force (PCF). Results show that optimization improves the energy absorption characteristics with constrained and unconstrained peak crashing load. Also, it is concluded that the aluminum tube has a better energy absorption capability rather than steel tube at a certain peak crushing force. The results justify that the interaction effects between the honeycomb and column walls greatly improve the energy absorption efficiency. A ranking technique for order preference (TOPSIS) is then used to sort the non-dominated solutions by the preference of decision makers. That is, a multi-criteria decision which consists of MOPSO and TOPSIS is presented to find out a compromise solution for decision makers. Furthermore, local and global sensitivity analyses are performed to assess the effect of design variable values on the SEA and PCF functions in design domain. Based on the sensitivity analysis results, it is concluded that for both models, the helix pitch of the honeycomb core has greater effect on the sensitivity of SEA, while, the core thickness has greater effect on the sensitivity of PCF.
The bending strength characteristics and local deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich composites were investigated using three-point bending experiment and finite element simulation with a real model of honeycomb core. Two kinds of cell sizes of honeycomb core, two kinds of skin layer thicknesses, perfect bonding specimen as well as initial delamination specimen were used for analysis of stress and deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich beams. Various failure modes such as skin layer yielding, interfacial delamination, core shear deformation and local buckling were considered. Its simulation results were very comparable to the experimental ones. Consequently, cell size of honeycomb core and skin layer thickness had dominant effects on the bending strength and deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich composites. Specimens of large core cell size and thin skin layer showed that bending strength decreased by $30\~68\%$.
Pull-out and shear strengths of insert Joints of sandwich structure were investigated by experiment. Specimens were prepared by cocuring of nomex honeycomb core and carbon-epoxy composite face using an adhesive FM73. A total of 75 specimens with 10 different types depending on the core height and density, face thickness, and loading direction were tested. In the test under pull-out loading, although both the core height and density affect the failure loads, the effect of cell density is more serious. Dominant factor fur failure loads of the joints under shear loading is face thickness and the effect of core height is negligible. In the joint with same dimension, failure loads vary depending on the potted area of the core, particularly in the pull-out test.

The Purpose of this paper is to determine the effect of the autoclave inner pressure rate, heat-up rate, tool round angle, Thickness of core, height of joggle on defects, and to minimize the defects of aircraft sandwich structure reinforced with honeycomb core occurred in autoclave processing. The results showed that the geometry of aircraft sandwich structure and tool such as tool round angle, Thickness of core, height of joggle, and the autoclave cure conditions such as inner pressure rate, heat up rate strongly affected the core movement, core wrinkle, bridge phenomenon of prepreg and depression of core that occurred in autoclave processing.

Nonlinear forced vibration behaviors of sandwich plates having graphene platelets (GPL) based face sheets have been researched in this article. Possessing low weight together with low stiffness, square honeycomb cores are mostly constructed by aluminum. Herein, the square shaped core has been fortified by two skins of GPL-based type in such a way that the skins have uniform and linearly graded GPL dispersions. The square shaped core has the effective material specification according to the relative density concept. The whole formulation has been represented based upon classical plate theory (CPT) while harmonic balance approach is applied for solving the problem and plotting the amplitude-frequency curves. The forced vibration behaviors of such plates are influenced by square-shaped core and the relative density, skin's height and GPL fortification.
A new sandwich composite was investigated in this paper. The honeycomb core of this composite was filled with viscoelastic material in order to obtain an improved damping performance. The viscoelastic fillings in the honeycomb cells was hoped to act as dampers and provide the function of energy dissipation in this combined material system. Dynamic test was set up to the specimens with various stacked carbon/epoxy laminate facesheets, $[0/90]_{4s}$, $[0/45/-45/90]_{2s}$, $[45/-45]_{4s}$. Frequency response, displacement response and damping ratio were checked and compared for the both groups of specimens, with and without rubber fillings. The experimental results provided a good agreement with our material design concept.
A type of hybrid core made up of thin-walled square carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) honeycomb and Polymethacrylimide (PMI) foam fillers was proposed and prepared. Numerical model of the core under quasi static compression was established and validated by corresponding experimental results. The compressive properties of the core with different configurations were analyzed through numerical simulations. The effect of the geometrical parameters and foam fillers on the compressive response and energy absorption of the core were analyzed. The results show that the PMI foam fillers can significantly improve the compressive strength and energy absorption capacity of the square CFRP honeycomb. The geometrical parameters have marked effects on the compressive properties of the core. The research can give a reference for the application of PMI foam materials in energy absorbing structures and guide the design and optimization of lightweight and energy efficient cores of sandwiches.

The soundness of honeycomb core sandwich and laminate structure used for commercial aircrafts is generally evaluated with ultrasonic inspection because the inspection is most sensitive to planar surfaces which are perpendicular to sound propagation pass and reflects sound almost 100% to equipment. And most defects inherent in composite material curing process has good reflective surfaces. With all this advantage, unexpected obstruction to product and additional cost could be occurred when inappropriate accept/reject criteria is given. In this study the importance of inspection criteria will be discussed to show how inappropriate criteria cause unexpected results leading to high production cost and how much time must be spent to correct those improper criteria with an actual case occurred in Aerospace Division, Korean Air.

Recently, composites have been widely applied in the sporting goods, automobile, aerospace industry. As the use of advanced composites increase, specific techniques have been developed to repair damaged composite structures. In order to repair the damaged part, it is required that the material in the damaged area be removed first by utilizing the proper method, and prepreg be laid up in the area and cured under vacuum using the vacuum bagging materials. In curing process, either in an oven or autoclave is to be delamination can be occurred in the sound areas during and/or after the exposure to the elevated curing temperature in case that the repair process is repeated. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the degree of degradation of properties of the cured parts and how it affects to the delamination phenomenon between laminated skin and honeycomb core.
