  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid feature extraction method in which Principal Components Analysis is combined with optimized k-Means clustering technique. Our approach hierarchically reduces the redundancy of features with high explanation in principal components analysis for choosing a good subset of features critical to improve the performance of classifiers. Based on this result, we evaluate the performance of intrusion detection by using Support Vector Machine and a nonparametric approach based on k-Nearest Neighbor over data sets with reduced features. The Experiment results with KDD Cup 1999 dataset show several advantages in terms of computational complexity and our method achieves significant detection rate which shows possibility of detecting successfully attacks.

  • Detection of fatigue cracks at an early stage of their development is important in structural health monitoring. The breathing of cracks in a structure generates higher harmonic components of the exciting frequency in the frequency spectrum. Previously, the residual operational deflection shape (R-ODS) method was successfully applied to beams with a single crack. The method is based on the ODSs at the exciting frequency and its higher harmonic components which consider both amplitude and phase information of responses to map the deflection pattern of structures. Although the R-ODS method shows the location of a single crack clearly, its identification for the location of multiple cracks in a structure is not always obvious. Therefore, an improvement to the R-ODS method is presented here to make the identification process distinct for the beams with multiple cracks. Numerical and experimental examples are utilised to investigate the effectiveness of the improved method.

  • Text extraction and binarization are the important pre-processing steps for text recognition. The performance of text binarization strongly related to the accuracy of recognition stage. In our proposed method, the first stage based on line detection and shape feature analysis applied to locate the position of a business card and detect the shape from the complex environment. In the second stage, several local regions contained the possible text components are separated based on the projection histogram. In each local region, the pixels grouped into several connected components based on the connected component labeling and projection histogram. Then, classify each connect component into text region and reject the non-text region based on the feature information analysis such as size of connected component and stroke width estimation.

  • AVI (Automatic Vision Inspection) systems automatically detect defect features and measure their sizes via camera vision. Defect detection is not an easy process because of noises from various sources and optical distortion. In this paper the acquired images from a TFT panel are enhanced with the adoption of an HVS (Human Visual System). A human visual system is more sensitive on the defect area than the illumination components because it has greater sensitivity to variations of intensity. In this paper we modified an MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) in the Wavelet domain and utilized the characteristics of an HVS. The proposed algorithm flattens the inner illumination components while preserving the defect information intact.

  • PCB (Printed Circuit Board) inspection using a deep learning model requires a large amount of data and storage. When the amount of stored data increases, problems such as learning time and insufficient storage space occur. In this study, the existing object detection model is changed to a continual learning model to enable the recognition and classification of PCB components that are constantly increasing. By changing the structure of the object detection model to a knowledge distillation model, we propose a method that allows knowledge distillation of information on existing classified parts while simultaneously learning information on new components. In classification scenario, the transfer learning model result is 75.9%, and the continual learning model proposed in this study shows 90.7%.

  • In the Korean seas, Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Thermal ronts (TF) were analyzed temporally and spatially during 8 years from 1993 to 2000 using NOAA/AVHRR MCSST. In the application of EOF analysis for SST, the variance of the 1st mode was 97.6%. Temporal components showed annual variations, and spatial components showed that where it is closer to continents, the SST variations are higher. Temporal components of the 2nd mode presented higher values of 1993, 94 and 95 than those of other years. Although these phenomena were not remarkable, they could be considered ELNI . NO effects to the Korean seas as the time was when ELNI . NO occurred. The Sobel Edge Detection Method (SEDM) delineated four fronts: the Subpolar Front (SPF) separating the northern and southern parts of the East Sea; the Kuroshio Front (KF) in the East China Sea, the South Sea Coastal Front (SSCF) in the South Sea, and the Tidal Front (TDF) in the West Sea. TF generally occurred over steep bathymetry slopes, and spatial components of the 1st mode in SST were bounded within these frontal areas. EOF analysis of SST gradient values revealed the temporal and spatial variations of the TF. The SPF and SSCF were most intense in March and October; the KF was most significant in March and May.

  • Dangguisu-san is a well-known traditional Korean herbal medicine prescription and has been widely used to treat ecchymosis, blood stagnation, and pain resulting from physical shock in Korea. In this study, an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometer method was established for the simultaneous determination of the 17 biomarker components in Dangguisu-san. All analytes were separated on an UPLC BEH $C_{18}$ ($100{\times}2.1$ mm, $1.7{\mu}m$) column and maintained at $45^{\circ}C$. The mobile phase consisted of two solvent systems, 0.1% (v/v) formic acid in water (A) and acetonitrile (B) by gradient flow. The injection volume was $2.0{\mu}l$ and the flow rate was 0.3 ml/min with detection at mass spectrometer. Calibration curves of the 17 biomarker components were acquired with $r^2$ values ${\geq}0.9951$. The values of limit of detection and quantification of all analytes were 0.02~6.32 ng/ml and 0.05~18.95 ng/ml, respectively. The amounts of the 17 components in Dangguisu-san sample were $3.17{\sim}13,224.50{\mu}g/g$.

  • Researching in text detection and segmentation has been done for a long period in the OCR area. However, there is some other area that the text detection and segmentation from images can be very useful. In this report, we first propose the design of a mobile translator system which helps non-native speakers to understand the foreign language using ubiquitous mobile network and camera mobile phones. The main focus of the paper will be the algorithm in detecting and segmenting texts embedded in the natural scenes from taken images. The image, which is captured by a camera mobile phone, is transmitted to a translator server. It is initially passed through some preprocessing processes to smooth the image as well as suppress noises. A threshold is applied to binarize the image. Afterward, an edge detection algorithm and connected component analysis are performed on the filtered image to find edges and segment the components in the image. Finally, the pre-defined layout relation constraints are utilized in order to decide which components likely to be texts in the image. A preliminary experiment was done and the system yielded a recognition rate of 94.44% on a set of 36 various natural scene images that contain texts.

  • Interactive Typography is a process where a user communicates by interacting with text and a moving factor. This research covers interactive typography using real-time response to a user's gesture. In order to form a language-independent system, preprocessing of entered text data presents image data. This preprocessing is followed by recognizing the image data and the setting interaction points. This is done using computer vision technology such as the Harris corner detector and contour detection. User interaction is achieved using skeleton information tracked by a depth camera. By synchronizing the user's skeleton information acquired by Kinect (a depth camera,) and the typography components (interaction points), all user gestures are linked with the typography in real time. An experiment was conducted, in both English and Korean, where users showed an 81% satisfaction level using an interactive typography system where text components showed discrete movements in accordance with the users' gestures. Through this experiment, it was possible to ascertain that sensibility varied depending on the size and the speed of the text and interactive alteration. The results show that interactive typography can potentially be an accurate communication tool, and not merely a uniform text transmission system.

  • The blur effect, which is generated by various external factors such as out-of-focus and object movement, degrades high-frequency components in the original sharp image. Based on this observation, we propose a novel method for blur detection using textural features. Specifically, the proposed method simultaneously adopts learning-based and watershed-based textural features, which effectively detect the blur on various situations. Moreover, we employ the region-based refinement to improve the processing time while also increasing detection accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method provides the competitive performance compared to previous approaches in literature.
