  • Since the Six Sigma strategy was first introduced to Motorola in 1987, it has been taken as an important business strategy to strengthen the competitiveness of leading companies in the global competitive environment. To keep growing and thriving, modern companies need to develop new businesses and find new applications while keeping existing ones on track. This situation necessitates a more effective way of discovering an optimal scenario in a business. In this paper, we propose a Business for Six Sigma (BFSS) road-map to create new businesses. BFSS consists of five macro phases: define, identify, analyze, evaluate, and implement. We also provide an example of F electronics, a Korean electronics component manufacturer, which actually applied the BFSS road-map to analyze marketability, technological plausibility and economic potential/success in connection with its new product development.

  • We tested effects of bioactive lysophospholipids including lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), sphingosylphosphorylcholine (SPC), and sphingosine I-phosphate (S1P) on membrane potential in C6 glioma cells to understand action mechanism of the lysophospholipids. Membrane potential was estimated by measuring fluorescence change of DiBAC-loaded glioma cells. LPA largely increased membrane potential and the increase was gradually diminished. LPC also increased the membrane potential, however, the increase sustained. SPC induced smaller increase of membrane potential than LPC. SIP was not able to change the membrane potential. We tested effects of suramin and pertussis toxin on lysophospholipid-induced membrane potential increase. However, there wasn't any effect. The membrane potential increase was partially diminished in $Na^+$-free media, suggesting $Na^+$ influx as a component of membrane potential changes. Thus, involvement of $Na^+$ influx in the increase of membrane potential by lysophospholipids and independence of suramin-sensitive GPCRs and pertussis toxin-sensitive G proteins are found in this study.

  • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous, non-coding, small RNA molecules consisting of 21-24 nucleotides (nts) that regulate target genes at the posttranscriptional level in plants and animals. In plants, miRNAs negatively regulate target mRNAs containing a highly complementary sequence by either mRNA cleavage or translational repression. MiRNAs are processed from single-stranded precursors containing stem-loop structures by a Dicer-like enzyme and are loaded into silencing complexes, where they act on target mRNAs. Although plant miRNAs were first reported in Arabidopsis 10 years later than animal miRNAs, numerous miRNAs have since been identified from various land plants ranging from mosses to flowering plants, and their roles in diverse aspects of plant developmental processes have been characterized. Furthermore, most of the annotated plant miRNAs are evolutionarily conserved in various plants. In particular, recent functional studies using Arabidopsis mutants have contributed a great deal of information towards establishing a framework for understanding miRNA biogenesis and functional roles. Extensive appraisal of miRNA-directed regulation during a wide array of plant development and plant responses to environmental conditions has confirmed the versatile roles of miRNAs as a key component of plant molecular biology.

  • The nuclear power plant was launched by Kori unit 1 in 1978 years. Currently, 23 nuclear power plants have been operating in Korea since 1978 years. The localization was completed for most of the reactor facility from Hanbit(Youngkwang) unit 3&4. However, RCP(Reactor Coolant Pump) and MMIS(Man Machine Interface System) is an important technology that has been excluded from the scope of the technical transfer has been dependent on a specific overseas vendor. Recent success in RCP development through co-operation with government and industries. Developed RCP will be applied to Shin-Hanul unit 1&2 nuclear power plants. The RCP operates in high speed and high pressure condition and only rotating component in the NSSS(Nuclear Steam Supply System). Therefore, the problem of vibration has arisen caused by the hydraulic forces of the working fluid. These forces can influence on the stability characteristics for entire RCS(Reactor Coolant System) loop, and can act as significant destabilizing forces. In this study, vibration evaluation of the pump shaft of development RCP estimated under normal operation and over speed conditions. In order to predict the vibration characteristics and dynamic behavior, modal analysis, critical speed analysis and unbalance response spectrum analysis were performed.

  • Alkali hydrolysis of sea-island PET 0.02denier microfiber were compared to those on the fabrics of the 0.06denier microfiber. In the dissolution of the sea component out of sea island type ultra-microfiber, it is important to determine the optimum division and divided material. Weight reduction of sea island ultra-micro sea island fiber was faster than regular PET about 10 times. Also 0.2denier sea-island ultra-micro sea island fiber has better color fastness (washing, friction, and daylight) than 0.06denier level sea-island ultra-microfiber. In this study, 0.2denier ultra-micro sea island fiber shows the possibility of high value product.

  • In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of ObjectPeerWork, which is a framework for the development of shared object model-based P2P(Peer-to-Peer) applications. The shared object model can prevent the computing power decrease on the way of resource management by incorporating the resource management function into resources themselves, and raise reliability on shared resources by improving the security problems. Also this model assures expandability by means of distributed component-based request broker manager and module container. The ObjectPeerWork based on this shared object model is a framework which makes the implementation of the enterprise information system possible, and makes distribution of the computing power and efficient resource management possible by improving the weakness in the general P2P model.

  • The steam distillate obtained from Thujopsis dolabrata var. hondai sawdust was fractionated by centrifugal thin-film evaporation, and the fractions were then investigated for antiplatelet activity using washed rabbit platelets. The biologically active constituent of T. dolabrata var. hondai sawdust was isolated by silica gel column and HPLC chromatographies and characterized as carvacrol by various spectral analyses. Carvacrol inhibited platelet aggregation induced by collagen, arachidonic acid, and platelet activating factor with IC$_{50}$ values of 12.6, 2.5, and 385.3 $\mu$M, respectively. However, carvacrol had no effect on thrombin, calcium ionophore A23l87, or phorbol l2-myristate l3-acetate induced platelet aggregation. Carvacrol was a much more potent inhibitor, as antiplatelet agents, compared with aspirin. These results suggest that carvacrol isolated from T. dolabrata var. hondai sawdust may be useful as a lead compound for inhibiting arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation.

  • The main purposes of this study was to develop evaluation model, which provides program educational objectives(PEO) evaluation research with guidances on how to evaluate the program educational objectives and procedures in order to enhance the quality of engineering education. Educational objective evaluation is reciprocal processes that depend on and affect one another. Thus, the evaluation component deals with how to identify members' strengths, weakness, and needs, how to assess and improve the effectiveness of curriculum programs, and how to provide data that assist in decision making. After literature reviews about the case studies on the program educational objectives evaluation, this study, to understand the meaning of education evaluation and the engineering accreditation, and then, examined the evaluation model for program educational objectives. This study suggested evaluation components of program educational objectives. In particular, the distinctions between diagnostic, formative, and summative evaluation are discussed. The result of this study is significant in terms of guiding the future evaluation model development for program educational objectives.
