  • In modern times, due to the centralized urban structure, the interval between buildings is narrow and the increase of the heat island phenomenon due to the accumulation of the structure is becoming a social problem. In order to solve these problems, various materials for reducing the surface temperature of buildings are under study. Particularly, in the case of a wall part which is a part directly affected by the outside air of the building, it is a main structural part for determining the room temperature. The purpose of this study was to develop a material that can improve the thermal environment performance of the building by evaluating the temperature control performance of the exterior finishing material using the heat reflecting material as a method for controlling the temperature of the outer wall finishing material.

  • Currently, according to the climate change, the damages due to the hurricane is more increased than before. In this respect, several countries have been conducted the studies regarding the damage prediction model of buildings to minimize the damages from natural disaster. As hurricane is the complex disaster including a strong wind and heavy rain, to predict the damage of hurricane, various factors has to be considered. However, mostly research has been conducted to consider only hurricane properties. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop the regression model for predicting damages of buildings considering geography, socio-economy, construction environment and hurricane information. In the future, this study can be utilized to developing damage prediction model for building from hurricane in South Korea.

  • Recent construction projects have been complex, larger and therefore BIM-based simulation has become more important. Through BIM simulation prior to the project improves the reliability and safety. Temporary plan is very important and all projects are an important foundation. However, a temporary plan to apply the BIM simulations are not going well. The reason for the building of a library well enough and the DB is not made. Therefore, a temporary plan of the library database is the correct formulation needed.

  • This paper describes the simple payback period analysis of small co-generation system based on the existing apartment and building data. First, We investigate apartment and building data more than $2000[m^2]$ using Ministry of Construction & Transportation's computer system. And then we calculate the latent amount of small co-generation system considering gas company and CHP. Second, we classify the latent amount of small co-generation system into office, hospital, hotel, department store, complex building and apartment. Finally, we perform the simple payback period analysis for small co-generation system. The results show the simple payback period of small co-generation system is less then 10 years.

  • Summary of experiments for the investigation of a fire which caused an upward fire spread for over 12 floors through balconies in a high-rise apartment complex is reported. The experiments include indoor tests to obtain fire properties of vertical PMMA fences and outdoor ones with a full scale model of the balcony. The test results suggest significance of the increase of total flame height by the merging of flames and a cooperative effect of the burning of the PMMA fence and combustibles on the balconies for the generation of a tall flame enough to cause ignition on the upper floors.

  • Firesafety design engineerings have been mainly derived from complicated rearrangement of descriptive specifications in codes or regulations through a great number of lessons from fire disasters. In this paper, the author refers to some recent developments in the field of building fire protection. At first, the author expresses his viewpoints concerning performance-based design codes, which have been popular throughout the world as a symbol of freedom from restricted usage of building materials and components prescrived in regulation or bylaws, in spite of some conflicts between objects-oriented design method and industrial mass production. Secondly, the author introduces several innovative fire protection methods adopted for large or void spaces in building complex. Finally, the author forcasts a next development of firesafety science and technology, aimed at securing personal safety in hyperscale urban areas.

  • In Korea, buildings are becoming skyscrapers due to restrictions on land. The performance-oriented design was introduced in 2009 for fire safety of such buildings, but the application of the combustible data through engineering design and experiment is a poor reality. Large buildings are used for complex purposes, especially since the density of the office facilities is high, the study conducted a study on the combustible materials of the office facilities and the thermal speed and fire load of the main combustibles of the office facilities were calculated.

  • Three-dimensional description of building structure taking into consideration soil-structure interaction is a very complex problem and solution of this problem is often obtained by using finite element method. However, this method takes a significant amount of computational time and memory. Therefore, an efficient computational model based on subdivision of the structure into building elements such as wall and floor slab elements, plane and three-dimensional joints and lintels, that could provide accurate results with significantly reduced computational time, is proposed in this study for the analysis three-dimensional structures subjected to dynamic load. The examples prove the efficiency and the computing possibilities of the model.

  • Application examples of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the planning stage of high-rise buildings are introduced. First, we introduce examples of applications in the environmental field. The pedestrian wind environment was one of the earliest practical examples of CFD. CFD was also employed to validate the heat island mitigation measures proposed as part of the new construction plan. Second, application examples of wind-force evaluations are introduced. Prediction examples are presented for the peak wind pressure around a complex-shaped building and the wind force evaluation for a base-isolated building. The results prove that the results of the proper execution of CFD are equivalent to those of the wind tunnel experiment. As examples of CFD applications of other issues related to high-rise building planning, we introduce snow accretion on outer walls and high-temperature exhaust from emergency generators. Finally, the future prospects for the use of CFD are discussed.
