  • A 3-year-old boy with Glenn physiology exhibited refractory heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. To improve the patient's oxygen saturation, he underwent ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation with concomitant Fontan completion. The extracardiac conduit Fontan operation was performed with a 4-mm fenestration. For VAD implantation, Berlin Heart cannulas were positioned at the left ventricular apex and the neo-aorta. Following weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass, a temporary continuous-flow VAD, equipped with an oxygenator, was utilized for support. After a stabilization period of 1 week, the continuous-flow VAD was replaced with a durable pulsatile-flow device. Following 3 months of support, the patient underwent transplantation without complications. The completion of the Fontan procedure at the time of VAD implantation, along with the use of a temporary continuous-flow device with an oxygenator, may aid in stabilizing postoperative hemodynamics. This approach could contribute to a safe transition to a durable pulsatile VAD in patients with Glenn physiology.

  • The HANARO nuclear research reactor had been operated successfully and smoothly up to the year 2008 since its first year of instability in year 1995 just after the completion of construction. But the reliability of the reactor has been degraded from the year 2009 due to new experimental facilities such as Feul Test Loop(FTL) and Cold Neutron Source(CNS) which were installed in the HANARO plant. It turned out that these new facilities contributed unexpected stoppage of the plant. This paper describes causes of stoppage and suggestions to improve the reliability of the plant.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of the sea bottom topology during construction of Saemangeum seadikes. Sea water depth and bottom topology in the Saemangeum area were measured every year and the surveyed data under construction of Saemangeum seadikes were analyzed and compared to the initial conditions before construction, There was erosion in the overall surveyed areas and the depth of erosion was approximately 53cm compared to the data in 1988. The center sandbanks of Seadike 2 did not show the great changes due to two main channels those were developed in northeast and southeast. The inland sandbanks of Seadike 4 showed the development of great erosion and deposition partially because of the changes in tide direction which developed as a result of the completion of Seadike 3 and the completion of a seadike of the Kunsan-Changhang industrial park at the north of Saemangeumm area.

  • Through the fourth industrial revolution and coronavirus pandemic situation, the necessity and importance of SW education are being emphasized more. However, it is difficult to achieve the effect of improving students' computational thinking skills by just 17th hour, which is organized in the 2015 revised curriculum. Moreover, due to the coronavirus pandemic situation that has continued since last year, there are environmental restrictions on the equal SW education for students at the educational site. In this study, the unplugged class using a completion robot was designed to reflect the current situation at the educational site and experience of SW education was provided to the 6th graders of J elementary school. Through the application of a class, we checked whether the unplugged class using robots affect students' perception of SW education and the use of computational thinking skills. As a result, the unplugged class using a completion robot showed that students used computational thinking to solve given problems and had a positive impact on changes in perception of SW education.

  • The JCMT is now in its third year of operations under EAO management. During this past year, we continued with calls for regular PI programs as well as the second call for Large Programs. The performance of SCUBA-2 has been improved by replacing internal optical filters. The 230GHz Receiver A is in the process of being replaced by a new closed-cycle system. The SCUBA-2 polarimeter, POL-2, commissioned during the past year, has been working very well in measuring the magnetic field structures in molecular clouds. The JCMT successfully participated in the Event Horizon Telescope experiment during April 2017, which utilized the phased-up ALMA for the first time. The first round of Large Programs are nearing completion, with first publications beginning to be published. The JCMT continues to welcome inputs from the community, and the next users meeting will be held in Seoul in January 2018.

  • Th Rach Gia Bypass Project, to be implemented under EDCF Loan VNM-12, constitutes a strategically important part of the Greater Mekong Sub-region Southern Coastal Corridor Project(the GMS-SCCP). The main goal of the GMS strategy is to promote sustainable economic growth, improve employment, and achieve poverty reduction by tapping the comparative advantages of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. As a project manager who once took a responsible position for the completion of RGBP's detailed design, I would like to briefly introduce what our design team including the local sub-contractors had performed for the D/Design of this Project last year, especially in the field of highway, bridge and soft soil treatment method widely used in Mekong Delta area. With the performance of nearly two Projects due to the V.O. in one year on the prescribed time, it was a hard year but a rewarding one. To expand our horizon more about overseas projects, several recommendations for the brighter future of overseas projects are shown herein this paper.

  • Recently, public interest in housing defects, such as construction errors, occupiers' complaints, faults in production, and so on, is increasing. In addition, the construction requirements of high-rise residential buildings have increased, due to the higher prices of urban areas, especially in metropolitan areas. While previous research has focused on the defects occurring in apartment housing complexes, research has not been carried out on the defects occurring in high-rise residential buildings. In this paper, the defects patterns and characteristics of high-rise residential buildings are examined and analyzed and a defect management plan is then suggested. In order to do this, we collected the defects data of high-rise residential buildings recorded by 2,299 of 2,327 occupants. The defect occurrence rate (DOR) in the residential area is 98.8%. The frequency rate of defect occurrence over the total defect occurrence since building completion is 63.28% during the first year, 24.63% (second year), 6.88% (third year), 2.27% (fourth year), and 2.53% (fifth year). The result of correlation analysis between work types showed that there is a relationship between the built-in furniture and electronics (F&E) and painting works, and the F&E and masonry works, such as marble finishing. We expect that this research will assist in the efforts to decrease the number of defects in high-rise buildings.

  • The operation performance of sewer rehabilitation projects conducted with Build-Transfer- Lease contract in Korea will be evaluated using the index of infiltration and inflow (I/I). Though I/I obtained at the fourth year should be initially evaluated based on the I/I values observed for the previous three years after the completion of sewer construction, the concrete methodology have not been proposed to rely on the so called 'performance evaluation committee'. This study suggests two statistical methodology to evaluate the I/I performance; the confidence interval method and the hypothesis-testing method. Assumed ten I/I values in each year for 20 years are used in this study. Two cases are analyzed and compared; case I to use as control data all I/I values for all years obtained before the evaluation year and case II to use I/I values for only 3 years before the evaluation year. As a result, case II tends to have relatively higher scores than case I, reflecting the low mean I/I values at the initial years.
