A study on the impacts of informal networks on knowledge diffusion in knowledge management

  • Knowledge management has garnered attention due to its role of maintaining competitive advantage. Creating and sharing knowledge is an essential part of managing knowledge. However, the best knowledge is underutilized because employees tend to seek knowledge through their informal networks, not reach out to other sources for obtaining the best knowledge. Prior studies on informal networks pointed out a negative influence of heavy reliance on learning through informal networks but they paid little attention to a structure of informal networks and its impacts on diffusion of knowledge. The aim of our study is to show impacts of informal network on knowledge management by employing a network structure and investigating diffusion of knowledge within it. Our study found out that performance of learning becomes lower in a highly clustered network. Creating random links such as serendipitous learning can improve performance of knowledge management. When employees rely on a knowledge management system, creating random links is not necessary. Costs of adopting knowledge affect performance of knowledge management.

  • In this paper, we present a new method for classifying object using LVQ (Learning Vector Quantization) with flexible output layer. The proposed LVQ is a supervised learning method that dynamically generates output neurons and initializes automatically the weight vectors from training patterns. If the classes of the nearest output neuron is different from the class of the training pattern, a new output neuron is created and the given training pattern is used to initialize the weight vector of the created neuron. The proposed method is significantly different from the previous competitive learning algorithms in the point that the output neurons are dynamically generated during the learning process.

  • To make cyber universities competitive, the level of the learning effect for students should be improved. The objective of this study is to analyse the factors influencing the learning effect of cyber universities. For this purpose, questionnaire survey has been used. For the statistical analysis, multivariate linear regression were utilized using the SAS program. According to the results in this study, the variables that influence toward the learning effect are the experience of computer, the systematic and comprehensive lecture note, and the quickly responses to questions. These variables can be utilized in improving the educational service quality of cyber universities.

  • It is to design diverse teaching methods to construct competitive knowledge-based society and to design teaching methods suitable to Korean conditions. The study reviewed Ausubel's meaningful learning especially subsumption theory as a plan to make students understand math and receive it meaningfully through explanatory class. Analyzing meaning and conditions of Ausubel's meaningful learning can make utility of significant explanatory learning in education of mathematics easier.

  • To inspect the power facility faults using artificial intelligence, it need that improve the accuracy of the diagnostic model are required. Data augmentation skill using generative adversarial network (GAN) is one of the best ways to improve deep learning performance. GAN model can create realistic-looking fake images using two competitive learning networks such as discriminator and generator. In this study, we intend to verify the effectiveness of virtual data generation technology by including the fake image of power facility generated through GAN in the deep learning training set. The GAN-based fake image was created for damage of LP insulator, and ResNet based normal and defect classification model was developed to verify the effect. Through this, we analyzed the model accuracy according to the ratio of normal and defective training data.

Fostering growth: The impact of STEM PBL on students' self-regulation and motivation

  • There is an increasing concern in the United States regarding the workforce's ability to maintain a competitive position in the global economy. This has led to an increased interest in effective science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of STEM project-based learning (PBL) on students' self-regulation and motivation to learn. Secondary students (n = 60) participated in a STEM summer camp in which STEM PBL was utilized. Results showed that students increased their self-regulation skills (t = 2.83, df = 59, p = .004) and motivation (t = 2.25, df = 59, p =.004), with Cohen's d effect sizes of 0.395 and 0.404, respectively. Student-centered learning and peer collaboration while solving real-world problems were likely the greatest contributing factors to the outcomes. Educators should utilize the results to provide opportunities for students to experience STEM PBL.

  • This study compared the difference of learning style, self-regulated learning, learning flow, analyzed the learning style impact on self-regulated learning and learning flow between gifted and normal student. The subjects of this study were 118 sixth grade gifted students and 124 general students who showed academic achievement of the same level. According to the results of this study, gifted elementary children had more than the general independent, competitive, participatory learning style and they used personal, behavioral and environmental self-regulation strategies more often. Also they had a higher degree of learning flow than the general. Both gifted and general students, the more independent and participatory learning style, the more increased self-regulated learning and learning flow. And the more used self-regulated learning, the more increased learning flow. The learning flow of the gifted children was higher the more independent, the more participatory, the more used behavioral and personal self-regulated learning strategies. The learning flow of the general elementary children was higher the more participatory, the more used environmental and personal self-regulated learning strategies.

Already, became story that argument for party satellite of e-Learning existence passes one season already. e-Learning is utilized already in all educations that we touch by effectiveness by corporation's competitive power improvement and implement of lifelong education in educational institutions through present e-Learning. It is obvious that when see from our viewpoint which is defining e-Learning by one industry and rear by application to education as well as one new growth power about these, e-Learning industry becomes very important means that can solve dilemma of growth real form. Only, special quality of digital industry that e-Learning is being same with other digital industry and repeat putting out a fire rapidly, and is repeating sudden change that these evolution is not gradual growth of accumulation and improvement of technology that is appearing consider need to. In the meantime, we need to observe about evolution of Information Technology. Because there is some scholars who e-Learning's concept foresees to evolve by u-Learning.(although, a person who see that these concept is not more in marketing terminology by some scholars' opinion is). This u-Learning's concept means e-Learning that take advantage of ubiquitous technology as Ubiquitous-Learning's curtailment speech. Ubiquitous, user means Information-Communication surrounding that can connect to network freely regardless of place without feeling network or computer. There is controversy about introduction time regarding these direction, but e-Learning is judged to evolve by u-Learning necessarily. Because keep in step and age that study all contents that learner wants under environment of 3A (any time, any whrer, any device) by individual order thoroughly is foreseen to come in ubiquitous learning environment that approach more festinately.

  • Recently many companies began to realize their visions for the sustainable growth with the advent of CSV(Creating Shared Values). Michael E. Porter, a Harvard Professor, claims that placing social value creation at the core of business strategy has the potential to uncover big opportunities for individual companies and that shared value can play a significant role in increasing competitive advantages while fostering social prosperity. In consequence, the various researches have illustrated how to get the opportunity for competitive advantages from building a social value proposition into corporate strategy, and considerable studies have been promoted heavily from the managerial perspective. However, due to the lack of capability converging information technology with business strategy, any research effort to identify technological or Internet-related issues and to link the issues to CSV does not exist. With Korean being a Internet leading country, the demands of researches analyzing core technology, information, and service utilizing Internet are rapidly growing. The study aims to find out Internet-related enablers for CSV. This paper describes the concepts and features of CSV, identifies emerging Internet-related issues toward the opportunity for competitive advantage, and then depicts the rigorous research endeavors in the areas of Internet information, technology, and services. As a result, 11 papers presented and selected as the outstanding papers at APIC-IST 2014 handle the issues to be brought together, which include: Wireless and Sensor Network, Image Processing and HCI, Big Data and Business Intelligence, Security & Privacy in Internet, SNS & Communication, Smart-Learning and e-Learning, and Internet Business Strategy. The study finally recommends indispensible terms for substantially vitalizing CSV.

Analysis of Learner's Characteristics and Relationship between Learning Styles and Achievements in Online Programming Course (온라인 프로그래밍 학습에서 학습자 특성 및 학습양식과 성취도간의 관계 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the learner's characteristics, and relationship between learning styles and achievements in online programming learning environment. For the analysis, after performing the inspection of learning styles of Grasha-Reichmann for 104 middle and high school students, online programming learning were performed for 12 weeks. First, according to learner's variable, boy was higher than girls in dependent learning style. Middle school student higher than high school student in competitive and avoid learning styles. Independent and participant learning styles show a significant difference in achievement level. Analysis of the relationship between learning styles and achievements show that independent(r=.253, p<.01) and participant(r=.303, p<.01) have the positive correlations. As a result, independent and participant learning styles are confirmed to be related with achievements. In addition, we analyzed each learning style characteristics by writing survey of the impression of the learners by main learning styles, through which we could derive teaching and learning strategies for the online programming by learning styles.
