For the time being, HMA test specimen were prepared by Marshall Compaction Method for hot mix asphalt design and evaluated the mechanical properties of HMA at the specified air voids. Gyratory Compaction can simulate the field compaction process and measure the degree of compaction just after field compaction in laboratory. Superpave mix design with Gyratory compactor has been used for characterization of performance. The curve of gyratory compaction can be used to evaluate the permanent deformation potential of hot mix asphalt. In this paper, couple of indices for hot mix asphalt have been showed for hot mix asphalt in Korea. The major properties from gyratory compaction curve are compaction energy index and traffic compaction index. The specific guide line for the potential of hot mix asphalt has been proposed.

Roller Compacted Concrete Pavement (RCCP), is a type of pavement using compaction roller and asphalt finisher on concrete mixture that contains low amount of water. RCCP strength and durability are greatly affected by compaction level. Quality control is performed by ensuring the degree of compaction at site based on dry density. In the field, Modified Proctor Test is used in order to obtain optimum dry density. However, there is no clear compaction curve analysis criteria of Modified Proctor Test for RCCP. In this study, compaction curve built by three samples of Modified Proctor Test was produced and it was used to compare with compaction curve contented lower number of samples (one and two samples) in order to analyze their reliability. Thus, a conclusion was drawn from the results; by comparing to the result from Modified Proctor Test of three samples, the use of two samples represented result with only 0.5% of error which means the reliability is 99.5%.

Proctor test A or D method of compaction is the most common laboratory test for investigation of subgrade soil characteristics, however, compression type using roller is used in the field. The differences between laboratory and field compaction have considerable error as application to subgrade soil properties of laboratory test. The investigation of compacted soil is carried into effect to solve the problem. The gyratory compactor which is made to reproduce the field density of asphalt mixture, coming from traffic loads, has an advance to compact it similar to arrangement of field aggregate particles. This gyratory compactor has several problems of investigation of compacted soil, because it has designed to make initial asphalt specimens. The main objectives of this research are grasping problems when compacted soil test using the gyratory compactor and showing solutions. It has made a comparative study of difference of the percentage of water content and weight, which are before and after compaction, about the pressure of compaction, frequency of compaction and speed of compaction. And it also has investigated finding maximum percentage of water content which not occur change of percentage of water content after compaction and searching how has an effect on drawing compaction curve.
We have studied the test method for strength of spray dried ceramic powder using manual press and UTM. which is one of the important to influence forming process. We could observe the compaction behavior using manual press. However the measurement of granule strength was only possible with UTM capable of providing the condition of a constant pressing rate. The strength of granule can be measured from the slope change of compaction curve and agrees with the value which is obtained from the combination of saturated tap density and compaction curve. So we proposed the accurate method to measure the strength of granule from the results of this study.

It is one of the most economical method of soil stabilization works to compact soil, which increases soil density artificially. Compaction effort is to lessen void of soils, and consequently its aim is to enlarge friction and cohesion force, and reduce permeability of soil. Factors in compaction effort are moisture content, grain size, grain size distribution, physical properties, compaction method and temperature of soils etc. The results obtained in this study on the effects that grain size, gradation and physical properties influence upon compaction effort for 20 samples under the constant compaction method, are summarized as follows: 1. The bigger the maximum dry density is, the smaller the optimum moisture content is, on the other hand, the smaller the maximum dry densityis, the bigger the optimum moisture content is, ingeneral. 2. The coarser the grain size is, the bigger the maximum dry density is, and the optimum moisture content becomes small, and dry density-moisture content curve has the sharp peak, generally. Also, the finer the grain size is the smaller the maximum dry density is, and the optimum moisture content shows the big value, and dry density-moisture content curve has the dull peak. 3. The maximum dry density shows the biggest value on the sample to be about 15% of particles finer than No. 200 sieve. The more the percent passing of No. 10 sieve increase, the smaller the maximum dry density is. Soils which have uniformity coefficient less than 5 in particles larger than 0.074mm hardly show dry density-moisture content curve. 4. There is a relation which is ramax=2.3948-0.0376 Wopt between the maximum dry density and the optimum moisture content, namely, the maximum dry density is increased in proportion to decrease of the optimum moisture content. 5. There are relations to be the straight lines which the maximum dry density decrease, on the other hand, the optimum moisture content increase in accordance with enlargement of Atterberg Limit(LL, PL, PL) in compacted soils.

Compacted soil are used in almost roadway construction with compaction of soil. The direct consequence of soil compaction is densification, which in turn results in higher strength, lower compressibility, and lower permeability. The standard and modified Proctor tests are the most common methods. Both of these tests utilize impact compaction, although impact compaction shows no resemblance to any type of field compaction and is ineffective for granular soils. It has been dramatic advances in field compaction equipment. Therefore, the Proctor tests no longer represent the maximum achievable field density. The main objectives of this research are a survey of current field compaction equipment, laboratory investigation of compaction characteristics, and field study of compaction characteristics. The findings from the laboratory and compaction program were used to establish preliminary guidelines for suitable laboratory compaction procedures.
The strict regulations on eco-friendly construction and the significant reduction of natural aggregate resources have raised public concerns on the utilization of recycled aggregates for backfilling a power transmission pipeline trench. In this paper, the particle breakage of concrete-based recycled aggregates and river sand has been experimentally studied during the standard compaction test. The applied compaction energy does not significantly break the river sand particles down, and thus causes no change in the compaction curve, thermal resistivity, and particle gradation characteristics. On the other hand, considerable particle breakage was observed in case of the three recycled aggregates. Such particle breakage leads to enhancing compaction effort, reducing thermal resistivity, and changing particle gradation curve with finer particles that are broken during the first compaction. In addition, particle breakage is more dramatic in lower water contents because pore water may damp down the compaction energy.

A systematic laboratory compaction testing was performed with the laboratory seismic measurements of the compacted specimens sampled from various compaction fills and was supplemented with in-situ seismic testing to investigate the effects of compaction energy on the elastic wave velocities of the railway roadbed materials. The both variances of the compressive and shear wave velocities with moisture content curve ($V_p$-w and $V_s$-w curves) are similar to the general trend of the density-moisture content curve(${\gamma}_d$-w curve). At the wet side of optimal moisture content (OMC), either $V_p$ or $V_s$ does not significantly increase, which is well reflecting the no gaining in density with the increasing compaction energy exceeding modified-D compaction effort. $V_p$ increases linearly with ${\gamma}_d$ at the dry side of OMC, while it does exponentially at the wet side. The in-situ wave velocities were found to be influenced by the level of confinement and $V_s$ was more sensitive to compaction energy than $V_p$.
In this study, to determine characteristics of compaction and the soil water characteristic curve(SWCC) in decomposed granitic soils, compaction tests and SWCC tests were carried out for samples having various contents of coefficient of uniform($c_u$), By compacting their samples with standard Proctor density test, the effects of binder contents on maximum dry density and optimum moisture content were investigated and compared. Samples compacted with the maximum dry density and the optimum moisture content were tested by means of the SWCC, to determine their SWCC parameters, such as Brooks & Corey(${\lambda}$, ${\Psi}_b$), Van Genuchten (${\alpha}$, n, m), Fredlund & Xing(a, n, m).

Effective range of Hydraulic Hammer Compaction was studied by numerical analysis instead of empirical method. Numerical analyses were carried out with commercial FEM code, ABAQUS, and verified by comparing the numerical results with field tests of Hydraulic Hammer Compaction. Most of material properties were evaluated by data from laboratory and in-situ tests. Vertical effective range was estimated by distribution curve of plastic strain energy dissipated through soil layers under dynamic load and these results were in good agreement with field tests. Based on verification, the effects of governing properties of Hydraulic Hammer Compaction such as number of hit can be determined by numerical analyses. In addition, vertical effective range can also be determined by Menard's empirical equation using the external work at converging time of plastic strain energy in numerical analysis. This implies that the minimum energy of Hydraulic Hammer Compaction for improvement can be determined by Menard's equation.
