  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of starch as a retarder on the maximum dry density and the unconfined compressive strength of soil cement mixtures for varied starch contents (0-3%), cement contents (3-12%), and delay times (0-6hrs) in four soils. The experimental results obtained from maximum dry density and unconfined compressive strength tests are as follows: 1. Maximum dry density and unconfined compressive strength were increased greatly in soil cement mixtues rwhen starch was added as retarder but their value schanged according to soil varieties. 2. Maximum dry density showed at about 0.5 percent to 1.0 percent of starch in KY soil and about 2.0 percent to 2.5 percent in SS soil when delay time was changed in 2.4, and 6 hours in compaction test. 3. The larger content of cement was, the bigger effects of maximum dry density and compressive strength were in soil cement. mixtures. 4. As delay time changed 2.4, and 6 hours in compaction test, 7-day unconfined compressive strength showed the biggest value at about 0.5 percent of starch in KY soil and 2.0 percent in SS soil, and the maximum value of 28-day unconfined compressive strength showed at about 0.5 percent in KY soil and 1.5 percent in SS soil.

  • For the purpose of obtaining basic information on the development of lead-free materials, a high density composites (a) W-Cu, (b) W-Sn (c)W-Cu-Sn and (d) W-Cu-Ni were fabricated by the P/M method. The particle size of used metal powders were under 325 mesh, inner size of compaction mould was $\phi8$ mm, and compaction pressure was 400 MPa. A High density composite samples were sintered at a temperature between $140^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour under Ar atmosphere. The microstructure, phase transformation and physical properties of the sintered samples were investigated. As the results, the highest relative density of 95.86% (10.87 g/$cm^3$) was obtained particularly in the sintered W-Cu-Sn ternary system sample sintered at 450 for 1hr. And, Rockwell hardness (HRB) of 70.0 was obtained in this system.

  • The objective of this paper is to assess the potential use of the resilient force of the ground obtained from an accelerometer and to propose a new compaction control process. Several comprehensive field experimental programs were conducted to analyze the correlation of compaction results obtained from an accelerometer and conventional test methods (e.g. the plate load test and field density test). This study focused on comparing the compaction results obtained from an accelerometer with conventional test results statistically. Based on the statistical analysis results, impact and resilient force measured from an accelerometer, mounted on the drum of a roller are very useful factors for continuous compaction control. A new compaction criteria determination process using an accelerometer is also proposed in this study.

  • This research is a comparison of the characteristics of the displacement isolines due to powder-die-wall friction that arise during the compaction of ceramic powders in conventional die. It has been done using the CosmosWorks software package of the SolidWorks simulation software. The results of comparative simulation with FEM showed that the comparison of the displacement isolines and distribution of deformation of the ceramic powders. In the case of conventional uniaxial dry compaction for long length cylindrical green compact, considerable bending of the layers in the form of a cone can be observed. It is symmetry along centerline of cylindrical green compact. The distributions of the deformation of the green compacts (diameter 14 mm, height 20 mm) as a result of conventional compaction under ultrasonic vibration with power 1 and 2 kW are reduced to 4% and 6.5% when compared with conventional compaction without ultrasonic vibration respectively. Thus, density distribution can be minimized by increasing the power of ultrasonic vibration.

  • In order to simulate the powder compaction process and to assess the effects of packing randomness and particle arrangement 2-dimensional model of rod array compaction using quasi-random multiparticle array is introduced. The elastic modulus of porous ceramics is computed by the homogenization method. With 3 Al₂O₃ and 3 Al particles the compaction processes associated with the porosities are simulated by the explicit finite element method, based on the elastic modulus found by the homogenization method. The simulation results are compared with both previous analytical ones and experimental measurements. Finally, in order to find the relationship between the friction coefficient of powder particles and the relative density, the sensitivity analysis is performed.

  • Saudi Arabia coastal area is highly valuable construction as a flat area covered by sabkha deposit. However, sabkha deposit has some geotechnical problems because of high groundwater level, high salt contents in groundwater, loose density, and possibility of collapsible settlement due to presence of crystals vulnerable to moisture, and ground improvement is needed to improve the bearing capacity. In this study, the characteristics of the sabkha soils in the coastal area of Saudi Arabia were analyzed and the applicability of dynamic compaction method was evaluated. Parametric study was conducted to analyze the behavior of sabkha deposit during dynamic compaction. The appropriateness of the proposed analytical solutions to estimate the depth of improvement was evaluated, and the troubles and notes in applying dynamic compaction in sabkha deposit were discussed.

  • This article presents the challenges toward the successful consolidation of $Al_2O_3$ nanopowder using magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC). In this research the ultrafine-structured $Al_2O_3$ bulks have been fabricated by the combined application of magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) and subsequent sintering, and their properties were investigated. The obtained density of $Al_2O_3$ bulk prepared by the combined processes was increased with increasing MPC pressure from 0.5 to 1.25 GPa. Relatively higher hardness and fracture toughness in the MPCed specimen at 1.25 GPa were attributed to the retention of the nanostructure in the consolidated bulk without cracks. The higher fracture toughness could be attributed to the crack deflection by homogeneous distribution and the retention of nanostructure, regardless of the presence of porosities. In addition, the as consolidated $Al_2O_3$ bulk using magnetic pulsed compaction showed enhanced breakdown voltage.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the present situation of compaction equipment used in the earth fill dam construction, and the compaction effects of varions types of equipment on core and pervious zones of the fill dam. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Banking materials mostly used for the core zone were soils classified as CL, SC and ML, while those classified as SM, ML and SC were predominant for the pervious zone. 2. Equipments used practically in the real fields were considerably different from those specified in the designs. 3. It was found that the relationship between optimum water content and maximum dry density for both core and pervious materials showed to be linear, ranging from 10% to 25% water content. That is, ${\gamma}$dmax (core) = 2.2555-0.0284 Wopt ${\gamma}$dmax(pervious) =2.239-0.028 Wopt 4. The generalized compaction guides for all kinds of equipment and soil types consi- dered in this study may be recommended as N=8-10 T=2Ocm, N=10-12 T=3Ocm for core zone(98%) and N=6-8 T=2Ocm, N=8-10 T=3Ocm for pervious zone (95%). 5. The coefficient of permeability in the field tests showed abont 10 times as high as the laboratory test value. This large deviation, however, was due to the horizontal permeation and considered not to be significant in the light of the satisfactory compaction ratio in the field compac- tion.

  • Densificationbehavior of conventional austenitic stainless steel powder compacts was studied by comparing the relative density of sintered compact(Ds)with that of green compacts(Dg)prepared with various catbon contents and P/M process. Dg of 304and 316 powders by warm compaction under pressure of 686 MPa at heating temperature of powder(553K) and dies (573K) were 80% and 81%, repectively, whichwere 2 and 3% higher than those of conventional green compacts at the same pressure. Ds of 304 compacts sintered at 1373K in H2 gas has the same value of 84% max. regardless of compacting temperature, and Ds of 316 compacts at the same sintering conditions were 80% by conventional compaction and 83% by warm compaction. Oxygen contents of 304 and 316 sintered compacts were increased 1.43∼2.94% and 0.010∼0.921% higher than those of raw powders and warm green compacts, respectively. In other case, Ds of 316 compacts sintered at 1573K in vacuum had the same value of 86%max. And Ds of 316 compacts at the same sintering conditions were 83% and 86% by conventional and warm compaction, respectively. Oxygen contents of 304 sintered compacts were 0.321% and 0.360%, and in case of 316, they were 0.419% and 0.182% by the respective compating condition. With carbon additions in the range 0.1∼0.6% Ds increased to the extent of 86∼89% in 304 sintered compacts, and to 82∼84% and 85∼87% in 316 according to different two compacting peocesses compared to those of sintered compacts without carbon addition.
