  • Stochasitc gravitational wave background (SGWB) is expected to be contributed by primordial sources (e.g. inflation signature) and astrophysical sources (e.g., incoherent superposition of a large numbers of compact binary inspirals throughout in the Universe). Theoretically, SGWB is predicted to span in a broad frequency range between less than nHz up to kHz. Many gravitational-wave (GW) detectors such as LIGO or LISA aim to detect or constrain SGWB in different frequency band that is most sensitive for each detector. In this talk, we focus on the prospectives of constraining the energy density of SGWB between 0.1-10 Hz. We introduce the characteristics of SGWB and representative models for primordial and astrophysical sources. Then, we propose a signal extraction scheme to detect SGWB using one or several omni-directional GW detectors such as SLGT(Superconducting Low-frequency Gravitational-wave Telescope). Considering SLGT sensitivity, we discuss how to observe SGWB in 0.1-10 Hz if we have SLGT network. Finally, we highlight interesting SGWB models that can be constrained in 0.1-10 Hz with SLGT.

  • Current state and perspective of DNS of turbulence and turbulent combustion are discussed with feature trend of the fastest supercomputer in the world. Based on the perspective of DNS of turbulent combustion, possibility of perfect simulations of IC engine is shown. In 2020, the perfect simulation will be realized with 30 billion grid points by 1EXAFlops supercomputer, which requires 4 months CPU time. The CPU time will be reduced to about 4 days if several developments were achieved in the current fundamental researches. To shorten CPU time required for DNS of turbulent combustion, two numerical methods are introduced to full-explicit full-compressible DNS code. One is compact finite difference filter to reduce spatial resolution requirements and numerical oscillations in small scales, and another is well-known point-implicit scheme to avoid quite small time integration of the order of nanosecond for fully explicit DNS. Availability and accuracy of these numerical methods have been confirmed carefully for auto-ignition, planar laminar flame and turbulent premixed flames. To realize DNS of IC engine with realistic kinetic mechanism, several DNS of elemental combustion process in IC engines has been conducted.

  • Topological maps have drawn more attention recently because they are compact, provide natural interfaces, and are applicable to path planning easily. To build a topological map incrementally, Voronoi diagram was used by many researchers. The Voronoi diagram, however, has difficulty in applying to arbitrarily shaped objects and needs long computation time. In this paper, we present a new method for global topological map from the local topological maps incrementally. The local topological maps are created through a thinning algorithm from a local grid map, which is built based on the sensor information at the current robot position. A thinning method requires simpler computation than the Voronoi diagram. Localization based on the topological map is usually difficult, but additional nodes created by the thinning method can improve localization performance. A series of experiments have been conducted using a two-wheeled mobile robot equipped with a laser scanner. It is shown that the proposed scheme can create satisfactory topological maps.

  • A new technique for detecting parametric faults in mixed signal circuits is proposed Pseudo-random sequence from linear feedback shift register(LFSR) is fed to circuit-under-test (CUT) as stimulus and wavelets are used to compact the transient response under this stimulus into a small number of signature. Wavelet based scheme decomposes the transient response into a number of signal in different frequency bands. Each decomposed signal is compacted into a signature using digital integrator. The digital pulses from LFSR, owing to its pseudo-randomness property, are almost uniform in frequency domain, which generates multi-frequency response when passed through CUT. The effectiveness of this technique is demonstrated in our experimental results.

  • Cavity tone is generated due to the feedback between flow and acoustic wave. It is recognized that the period is determined by the time required for the flow convection in one direction, the time required for the acoustic propagation in the other direction and the time for phase shift depending on the flows and mode. Most of the phenomena have been investigated by experiments and a simple but fundamental theory. But the cause of the phase shift and the correctness of the theory have not been clearly explained so far. In this paper, the phenomena are calculated numerically to obtain detail information of flow and acoustic wave to explain the mechanism including the phase. High order high resolution scheme of optimized high order compact is used to resolve the small acoustic quantities and large flow quantities at the same time. The data are reduced using cross correlation function in space and time and cross spectral density function which has phase information. Abrupt change in pressure near corner in cavity is observed and is relate to phase variation. The time required for the feedback between the flow and acoustic wave is calculated after the numerical simulation f3r various modes. The periods based on the time calculated using the above method and direct observation from the acoustic waves generated and propagated in the numerical simulation are compared. It is found that no phase shift is required if we examine the time required carefully. Rossiter's formula for the cavity tone used for quick estimation needs to be modified far some modes.

  • We introduced a scheme for finding an optimal data association matrix that represents the relationships between the measurements and tracks in multi-target tracking (MIT). We considered the relationships between targets and measurements as Markov Random Field and assumed a priori of the associations as a Gibbs distribution. Based on these assumptions, it was possible to reduce the MAP estimate of the association matrix to the energy minimization problem. After then, we defined an energy function over the measurement space that may incorporate most of the important natural constraints. To find the minimizer of the energy function, we derived a new equation in closed form. By introducing Lagrange multiplier, we derived a compact equation for parameters updating. In this manner, a pair of equations that consist of tracking and parameters updating can track the targets adaptively in a very variable environments. For measurements and targets, this algorithm needs only multiplications for each radar scan. Through the experiments, we analyzed and compared this algorithm with other representative algorithm. The result shows that the proposed method is stable, robust, fast enough for real time computation, as well as more accurate than other method.

  • A gas-liquid centrifugal separator is widely used in industry because of its simple geometry and little maintenance. Also, these separators have considerable advantages over filters, scrubbers or precipitators in term of compact design, low pressure drop and higher capacity. A gas-liquid centrifugal separator is a device that utilizes centrifugal force and low pressure to separate liquid from gas by density difference. Design parameters such as length of separation space, swirl vane exit angle, inlet to outlet pipe diameter ratio, models for separation efficiency and low pressure drop as a function of physical dimension are not available in literature. In present study, length of separation space (from vane to gas exit opening) has been studied using CFD. The 3-D Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. Based upon the obtained solutions, tangential velocities, centrifugal forces, vortices and total pressure losses are analyzed to find the best design parameters.

  • This paper presents a simple and cost-effective stand-alone rapid battery charging system of 30kW for electric vehicles. The proposed system mainly consists of active front-end rectifier of neutral point clamped 3-level type and non-isolated bi-directional dc-dc converter of multi-phase interleaved half-bridge topology. The charging system is designed to operate for both lithium-polymer and lithium-ion batteries. The complete charging sequence is made up of three sub-interval operating modes; pre-charge mode, constant-current mode, and constant-voltage mode. The pre-charge mode employs the stair-case shaped current profile to accomplish shorter charging time while maintaining the reliable operation of the battery. The proposed system is specified to reach the full-charge state within less than 16min for the battery capacity of 8kWh by supplying the charging current of 78A. Owing to the simple and compact power conversion scheme, the proposed solution has superior module-friendly mechanical structure which is absolutely required to realize flexible power expansion capability in a very high-current rapid charging system.

  • Turbomachinery such as turbines, pumps and compressors, which are installed in transportation systems, including aircrafts, ships, and space vehicles, etc., often perform crucial missions and are exposed to potential dangerous impact environments such as base-transferred shock forces. To protect turbomachinery from excessive shock forces, it may be needed to accurately analyze transient responses of their rotors, considering the dynamics of mount designs to be applied. In this study a generalized FE transient response analysis model, introducing relative displacements, is proposed to accurately predict transient responses of a flexible rotor-bearing system with mount systems to base-transferred shock forces. In the transient analyses the state-space Newmark method of a direct time integration scheme is utilized, which is based on the average velocity concept. Results show that for the identical mount systems considered, the proposed FE-based detailed flexible rotor model yields more reduced transient vibration responses to the same shocks than a conventional simple model, obtained by treating a rotor as concentrated lumped mass, equivalent spring and a damper or Jeffcott rotor model. Hence, in order to design a rotor-bearing system with a more compact light-weighted mount system, preparing against any potential excessive shock, the proposed FE transient response analysis model herein is recommended.
