A Study on the Recognition of English Pronunciation based on Artificial Intelligence (인공지능 기반 영어 발음 인식에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, the fourth industrial revolution has become an area of interest to many countries, mainly in major advanced countries. Artificial intelligence technology, the core technology of the fourth industrial revolution, is developing in a form of convergence in various fields and has a lot of influence on the edutech field to change education innovatively. This paper builds an experimental environment using the DTW speech recognition algorithm and deep learning on various native and non-native data. Furthermore, through comparisons with CNN algorithms, we study non-native speakers to correct them with similar pronunciation to native speakers by measuring the similarity of English pronunciation.

The Efficacy of Using a Learning-App in a Zoom-Based English Class in the Untact Era (언택트 시대 줌 기반 영어 수업에서 학습 앱 활용의 효율성)

  • This study examined how the use of learning apps in Zoom-based classes affects learners' English achievement and assessed the efficiency of app use in Zoom-based English classes. The study utilized the English Central (EC) app to induce learners to actively participate in zoom-based classes. To assess the app's efficiency, two rounds of achievement tests and an open-ended questionnaire were administered. The two tests showed that Zoom-based EC app utilization classes positively affected learners' English achievement and the questionnaire revealed that the learners were highly satisfied with using the EC app in Zoom-based classes. The participants praised this approach for "complementing insufficient class content" and facilitating "immediate feedback" (on the EC app), "English practice," and "real-time communication and sharing of opinions" (on Zoom-based classes), describing it as "not boring" and "4 skill training in English." Instructors should strive to efficiently use such new teaching tools in the evolving environment of the untact era.

This study aims to provide skating ESP(English for Specific Purposes) education model for skating instructors in Korea. For this purpose, a total of twenty-seven professional skating instructors were surveyed according to a questionnaire, which asked about their English skills and perspective of the importance of English study and English skating class. The main results are as follows: most skating instructors' confidence in their English is low; majority of them answered that English study is needed for skating instructors; a majority of them want English teaching that focused on speaking and teaching activities. After that, skating instructors' jobs were analyzed using the DACUM(Developing A Curriculum Method). A DACUM committee extracted the duties and tasks which require English education and conducted a survey that targeted skating instructors. When interpreting the study on ESP Skating English Education based on job analysis, it was evident that the English language would be essential for enabling effective communication with judges during national sports competitions, information exchange with foreign skaters, and for technical skating instructions.   • In this study, the number of non-English speaking visitors is increasing day by day, and accordingly, there was a limitation in language communication and communication during radiographic examination. To this end, after distributing the handbook produced for inspection, the improvement effect of before and after explanation was examined. The score scale was not statistically significant as to whether it was the test site or not, and the degree of discomfort of the test, the degree of understanding of the breathing guidelines, and the satisfaction of the test description were improved and the score scale was improved before and after the description of the guide. Non-English-speaking foreign visitors were more satisfied with explanations in their own text than in English or Korean, and the method was also able to conduct effective inspections by informing the foreign guests when to control their breathing by using the lighting signals in the laboratory. In the future, the quality of medical services and imaging medical examinations can be improved only when communication methods are implemented from various perspectives, such as developing various language interpretation programs, developing guides for various test sites, and developing tools and improving foreign language skills of radiologists and medical staff. There will be. In the future, it may be used as a basic resource to prepare a manual that can be used to examine non-English speaking foreigners who do not understand English or Korean in other radiology labs.

  • The purpose of this study is to guide efficient ways to teach cultural aspects in Korean elementary English education through analyzing many studies on elementary English culture education. In global era, English education must be performed based on understanding of other various cultures for authentic communication. However, Korean elementary students have difficulty to approach or to be exposed to the culture of English speaking countries. Elementary English culture education is neither well organized nor performed for some reasons. The reasons are as follows. Frist, English teachers are not confident with the culture and they consider themselves not having enough experiences and knowledge to teach. They were not taught cultural aspects and the cultural aspects were not emphasized. Second, there are not appropriate culture related teaching materials in the textbooks and teachers' guide books. Therefore, necessary cultural aspects should be selected by English education experts and provided in the textbooks and teachers' guide books. Those two books should be systematically connected. Elementary English teachers should have more opportunities to understand and experience other various cultures. Language is a part of culture and culture is a part of language. Acquiring the second language is acquiring its culture. The culture education for authentic communication is accomplished from managing cultural aspects in textbooks and cultivating English teachers with experience and understanding of target culture.

EFL Learners' Use of the Modals and Quasi-Modals of Obligation and Necessity

  • This study examines the use of the modals and quasi-modals of obligation and necessity, which involves the layering of must, should, have (got) to, got to, and need to in a corpus of cross-cultural communication between EFL learners. The study compares the EFL learners' corpus with a sub-corpus of ICE-GB in terms of token counts and semantic/functional distributions because International Corpus of Standard varieties of English serves as common reference points for international comparison of varieties of English. The results showed that must, should, and have to were the main players in both the corpus of EFL learners and that of native speakers. However, some discrepancy exists between EFL learners' corpus and the native speakers' corpus in the use of the modals and quasi-modals of obligation and necessity. Compared to the corpus of native speakers, the corpus of EFL learners was distinctively different in the relative unpopularity of have to and in the comparative popularity of must particularly for root meaning. Suggestions were made for using computer corpora in understanding EFL learners' language use. And pedagogical implications were made for teaching English modality considering the current usage of the modals and quasi-modals in Standard varieties of English and helping the students develop pragmatic competence.

English Medium Instruction in Higher Education: Does It Promote Cultural Correction or Cultural Continuity?

  • This study investigates English medium instruction (EMI) in an institution of higher education in Seoul, Korea to see whether this course creates cultural correction (reproduction of inequitable relations of power in EMI settings) or cultural continuity (opportunities for transporting students into a third space and enabling them to explore cultural diversity and to create new knowledge for themselves). A single site where EMI is carried out, a class on fairy tales and child education taught by a native English speaking professor, was chosen because it was hypothesized that the professor would display some of her unconscious dominant cultural orientation. The results of the study show that there more cases of cultural correction than there were of cultural continuity. Cases of cultural correction included lack of knowledge about the local context, fixing Korean classroom discourse as if it were American classroom discourse, and reproducing orientalism in the local educational setting. Cases of cultural continuity included using comparison to consider the cultural reality of the milieu, creating new knowledge for the local milieu, and learning as a dynamic ongoing process. Implications of this research are discussed including the important realization that EMI should be managed by subject specialists who are trained in language education and have knowledge of the students' needs and discourse in the L1 and in the local context.

A Small Scale Investigation into Teacher Questions in the Primary English Classroom

  • The purpose of the present classroom research is to investigate teacher talk in the primary English classroom with special reference to teacher questions. The analysis of the recorded teacher questions reveals that the teacher asks a carefully structured sequence of questions leading to the clear pedagogical goals she has set: to encourage students to correct themselves; to find out what students know; to personalize the task; and to elicit culture talk. It is also shown that her use of display questions is supportive of learning; the teacher provides feedback in a way which is as communicative as possible in the context of the classroom and which facilitates the attainment of the pedagogical purposes. All these findings suggest that we consider how teacher talk may perform communicative functions in the classroom context rather terms defining communicative teacher talk purely in terms of the norms of communication outside the classroom.

Anatomizing Popular YouTube Channels of English-speaking Countries

  • YouTube, the online video streaming platform, has become popular and influential around the globe. Due to the development of science and technology, people without expertise in filming can now easily produce their videos with unique content. Many people are more eager to become a popular YouTube creator because they can earn money by placing commercials or Products in Placement (PPL) in their video clips. However, it is yet unknown what genres of YouTube videos are popular. YouTube creators have their channels where they upload videos of a certain type of genre. This study investigates video genres of the top 250 YouTube channels in English-speaking countries (United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia) using Social Blade, which is a research website. The ranking is set based on the number of times people watched a video ("Video Views"). We handsomely analyze popular genres of the channels and also the YouTube ecosystem, and it will be meaningful for today's new media era.

Development of Tourism Information Named Entity Recognition Datasets for the Fine-tune KoBERT-CRF Model

  • A smart tourism chatbot is needed as a user interface to efficiently provide smart tourism services such as recommended travel products, tourist information, my travel itinerary, and tour guide service to tourists. We have been developed a smart tourism app and a smart tourism information system that provide smart tourism services to tourists. We also developed a smart tourism chatbot service consisting of khaiii morpheme analyzer, rule-based intention classification, and tourism information knowledge base using Neo4j graph database. In this paper, we develop the Korean and English smart tourism Name Entity (NE) datasets required for the development of the NER model using the pre-trained language models (PLMs) for the smart tourism chatbot system. We create the tourism information NER datasets by collecting source data through smart tourism app, visitJeju web of Jeju Tourism Organization (JTO), and web search, and preprocessing it using Korean and English tourism information Name Entity dictionaries. We perform training on the KoBERT-CRF NER model using the developed Korean and English tourism information NER datasets. The weight-averaged precision, recall, and f1 scores are 0.94, 0.92 and 0.94 on Korean and English tourism information NER datasets.
