  • All of the hydraulic spool valves adopt radially grooved spools to avoid hydraulic locking. In this paper, a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT is used to investigate the accurate Poiseuille flow characteristics inside single groove. The stream lines, velocity and pressure distributions are obtained for various groove widths, depths and shapes. The stream lines are highly affected by groove shape and there occurred large vortexes inside groove beyond a certain ratio of groove width to depth. Especially the U shaped groove restrains the occurrence of vortex. Therefore the numerical method adopted in this paper can be use in optimum designing of multi-grooved hydraulic spool valves.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve thermal environment of telecommunication equipment rooms that hold TDX-10, TDX-100, 5ESS-2000, PCM of the latest telecommunication equipment. Analysis program is used the commercial CFD code, Star-CD and DOE-2.1E. The result has been compared by the energy consumption and the temperature contour at the 1 m height of room for each case. Different methods such as the relocation of the existing air-conditioner, the inflow of the ambient air into room, the installation of the forced fan and the cooling system equipment of the duct-connection type have been used to test for improvement of thermal environment. The analysis shows that most efficient method is the inflow of the ambient air into room but auxiliary equipment should be needed to prevent the local thermal spot.

  • In the present study, the air jet flow characteristics of the dryer in the automatic car wash machine were numerically predicted by commercial CFD code. The effects of the dryer shape and the nozzle width variations on the performance of the automatic car wash machine were discussed. To optimize the geometric parameters, the response surface method(RSM) with CFD was used. Predicted jet velocity distributions for the optimized geometry were compared with experimental data and the comparisons show generally good agreements. Also, the performance of the dryer was improved with the optimized results.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on the overall performance and local flow characteristics of the sirocco fan. The effects of impeller and volute shape distribution on the performance of the sirocco fan were numerically studied using a commercial CFD code and a DOE (design of experiments) software. At present, our attention was focused on the relation of the results of DOE and the performance of the sirocco fan. As a main result of the optimization, the performance of the sirocco fan was successfully improved. Also, detailed effects of geometric parameter of impeller and volute in the sirocco fan were discussed.

  • In the present work, flow analysis has been performed for side channel type double stage ring blower by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation. Shear stress transport model is used as turbulent closure. The commercial CFD code CFX 11.0 is used for the calculations. Each of two stage is calculated separately and the second stage inlet flow is same as the first stage outlet flow so that consecutive calculation is possible. Velocity and pressure fields have been analyzed at the midplane between blades. The numerical results are validated with experimental data for head coefficients at different flow coefficients.

  • Recently, several open source codes for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have been emerged and are spreading fast. Our group has chosen OpenFOAM as a platform to develop our own in-house code. In this paper, we would like to share the information on the codes and what we have experienced so far. We introduce several features of OpenFOAM, which include the performance compared with commercial packages, estimation for current user population and our own prospect for future improvement in performance and growth in user population. In addition, we briefly introduce our experience gained in embedding the level set method into the OpenFOAM.

  • This study describes effects of width contraction in vaneless diffuser on the performance of centrifugal compressors using commercial CFD code. Numerical analysis for three different diffusers such as Parallel, half contraction, and full contraction was performed. The results show that the performance of the centrifugal compressor is improved through the use of the diffusers with width parallel in high flow rate. The width contraction of diffusers is influenced static pressure rises. Comparison with the experimental data shows agreement.

  • Numerical analysis for pressure drag on boattail afterbodies have been studied by Mach number, boattail angle and length ratio of body diameter and base diameter using CFD-FASTRAN that the commercial external flow CFD code. The numerical results have been compared with the experimental data that have been shown pressure drag reduction and supersonic turbulent flow characteristics for boattail afterbodies. And the prediction equation tot boattail base drag has been made by the numerical results about Mach number and boattail configuration parameters.

  • A computational study was carried out in order to investigate aerodynamic characteristics on leading edge sweepback angles of Flying-Wing configurations. The viscous-compressible Navire-Stokes equation and Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model of the commercial CFD code were adopted for this computation analysis. This investigation examined aerodynamic characteristics of three different types of leading edge sweepback angles: $30^{\circ}C,\;35^{\circ}C\;and\;40^{\circ}C$. The freestream Mach number was M=0.80 and the angle of attack ranged from ${\alpha}=0^{\circ}C\;to\;{\alpha}=20^{\circ}C$. The results show that the increases in sweepback angle of the Flying-Wing configuration creates more efficient aerodynamic performance.
