Micro electric spark discharge device was fabricated on a FOTURAN glass wafer using MEMS processing technique and its performance of electron discharge and subsequent formation of ignition kernel were tested. Micro electric spark device is an essential subsystem of a power MEMS that has been under development in this laboratories. In a combustion chamber of sub millimeter scale depth, spark electrodes are formed by electroplating Ni on a base plate of FOTURAN glass wafer. Optimization of spark voltage and spark gap is crucial for stable ignition and endurance of the electrodes. Namely, wider spark gaps insures stable ignition but requires higher ignition voltage to overcome the spark barrier. Also, electron discharge across larger voltage tends to erode the electrodes limiting the endurance of the overall system. In the present study, the discharge characteristics of the proptotype ignition device was measured in terms of electric quantities such as voltage and currant with spark gap and end shape as parameters. Discharge voltage shows a little decrease in width of less than 50㎛ and increases with electrode gap size. Reliability test shows no severe damage over 10$\^$6/ times of discharge test resulting in satisfactory performance for application to proposed power MEMS devices.

Nonlinear acoustic damping of a half-wave acoustic resonator in a rocket combustor is investigated numerically adopting a nonlinear acoustic analysis. First, in a baseline chamber without any resonators, acoustic behavior is investigated over the wide range of acoustic amplitude from 80 dB to 150 dB. Damping factor increases nonlinearly with acoustic amplitude and nonlinearity becomes appreciable at acoustic amplitude above 125 dB. Next, damping effect of a half-wave resonator is investigated. It is found that nonlinear acoustic excitation does not affect optimum tuning condition of the resonator, which is derived from linear acoustics. A half-wave resonator is effective even for acoustic damping of high-amplitude pressure oscillation, but its function of acoustic damper is relatively weakened compared with the case of linear acoustic excitation.

Liquid methane ($CH_4$)/oxygen ($O_2$) bipropellants have been recently considered as a next-generation propellant due to eco-friendly and non-toxic properties, low cost and high performance. In this study, the combustion characteristics of gaseous $CH_4/O_2$ nonpremixed coflow flames in a model combustor with variation of internal pressure are investigated through measuring the combustion stability limits and visualizing flames. Results show that the combustion stability limits are extended and the reaction region is widened with increasing internal pressure of the combustion chamber for fuel-rich condition.

The similarity in internal flow of solid and hybrid rocket suggests that hybrid rocket combustion can be susceptible to instability due to vortex sheddings and their interaction. This study focuses on the evolution of interaction of vortex generated in pre-chamber with other types of vortex in the combustor and the change of combustion characteristics. Baseline and other results tested with disks show that there are five different frequency bands appeared in spectral domain. These include a frequency with thermal lag of solid fuel, vortex shedding due to obstacles such as forward, backward facing step and wall vortices near surface. The comparison of frequency behavior in the cases with disk 1 and 3 reveals that vortex shedding generated in pre-chamber can interact with other types of vortex shedding at a certain condition. The frequency of Helmholtz mode is one of candidates resulting to a resonance when it was excited by other types of oscillation even if this mode was not discernable in baseline test. This selective mechanism of resonance may explain the reason why non-linear combustion instability occurs in hybrid rocket combustion.

Effects of mean flow and nozzle damping on acoustic tuning of a gas-liquid scheme coaxial injector are investigated numerically adopting a linear acoustic analysis. The injector plays a role as a half-wave acoustic resonator for acoustic damping in a combustion chamber of a liquid rocket engine. As Mach number of mean flow in a chamber increases, the resonant frequency of the first tangential mode decreases slightly and the optimum injector tuning length varies negligibly. Nozzle damping affects neither the resonant frequency nor the optimum length. From these numerical results, effects of mean flow and nozzle damping on acoustic tuning of a resonator are negligible. As open area of the injectors increases, the acoustic amplitude decreases, but new injector-coupled modes appear.

The reacting flows of gaseous hydrogen/liquid oxygen 2D coaxial shear injector with varying recess length are numerically analyzed. The standard ${\kappa}-e$ model and laminar flamelet model are adopted for the steady turbulent combustion with the ideal and real gas equations. As the recess length increases, the recirculating region in the combustion chamber expands and the vorticity is intensified. Also, the variations of temperature, products, and pressure are strongly related to the recess length. The results show that an efficient combustor can be obtained by the introduction of the recessed injector.

Experimental study was carried out to investigate the combustion characteristics of the hero-valved pulsating combustor with maximum operating capacity of 56kW. The pressure, the ion current, and the temperature fluctuations were simultaneously measured and statistically analyzed to identify the combustion process, the reignition and the mixing process of the reactants. It was found that the pulse combustion process was intermittent and the reignition of the reactants was caused by a direct contact and rapid mixing with the previous hot residuals. The analysis of the measured data indicated that the combustion process consisted of there stages in the combustion chamber; the preheating of the reactants in the vicinity of the air inlet pipe, the explosive combustion in the central region and the afterburning in the vicinity of the tailpipe. Wile the inflow of the fresh air occurred during the negative period of the pressure in the mechanical valved system, it occurred during the rising period of the pressure in the aero-valved system.

The characteristics at the intermediate operation point of the turbopump-gas generator(TP-GG) coupled test were investigated by analytical method. The pump outlet pressure, gas generator mixture ratio, gas generator pressure, and temperature were examined considering risk minimization of test. The engine system shows different behavior from the TP-GG coupled test at the intermediate operation point since the combustion pressure feeds back to the flow rate in the lines. The advanced valve changes in the combustor line helps less risky mode transition.

Acoustic design parameters of a half-wave resonator are studied experimentally for acoustic stability in a model combustor. According to standard acoustic-test procedures, acoustic-pressure signals are measured. Quantitative acoustic properties of damping factor and sound absorption coefficient are evaluated and thereby, the acoustic damping capacity of the resonator is characterized. The diameter and the number of a half-wave resonator, its distribution are selected as design parameters for optimal tuning of the resonator. Acoustic damping capacity increases as the resonators with diameter increases. The optimum number of resonators or the optimum open-area ratio decreases as boundary absorption decreases.
