A Study on the Characteristics of Mixed Combustion for Hydrox Gas (Hydrox Gas 혼합연소특성 에 관한 연구)

  • Hydrox gas which is the mixed gas of hydrogen and oxygen gained fromwater electrolysis is one of the new clean energy sources and thus is researched and commercialized actively. Especially, it can be replaced the fossil energy and shows the better quality compared to the conventional energy such as LPG or acetylene gas. The mixed gas of hydrogen and oxygen is gained from water electrolysis reaction. It has constant volume ratio 2:1 of hydrogen and oxygen, and it is used as a source of thermal energy by combustion reaction. Further, hydrox gas is nearly a mixed ideal gas combusting itself completely and its combustion shows anunique characteristics of implosion. In this study, temperature rise effects on hydrox gas content through mixed combustion test of kerosene and hydrox gas and LPG and hydrox gas are investigated. it is also confirmed that economy of mixed combustion of hydrox gas as effective energy is fairly probable.

  • In the iron ore sinter process, temperature distribution pattern in sintering bed is related with productivity and quality of sintered ore. Evenly heat distribution make the uniform quality of sintered ore but in normal operating condition, upper part of bed has lack of heat and scarce quality of sintered ore, thus yeild rate is decreased and productivity is diminished. Therefore, using the additional fuel for increasing quality and flue gas recirculation for increasing productivity are considered and effect of both processes are discussed.

Fuel Properties of Woody Pellets in Domestic Markets of Korea

  • This study investigated physical properties and combustion gas characteristics for 8 types of wood pellets (4 domestic and 4 imported products) distributed in the domestic market. Results showed that most pellet types were first-grade pellets in the wood pellet quality standards in Korea with the exception of 3 pellet types from K company (second-grade in mechanical durability), G company (off-grade in nitrogen content) and P company (second-grade in ash percentage). Mixed pellets which contained more lignin and sap content were higher in mechanical durability (%) than that of white pellets. From the combustion gas analysis results, NOx emitted from all pellets combustion was at acceptable levels for national emission standard of the Clean Air Conservation Act except for pellets from G company. In addition, CO levels from all types of wood pellets were acceptable except for pellets from D company and domestic pellets were higher CO levels than imported pellets. These results indicate the higher CO levels in domestic pellets due to the usage of forest thinning materials including logging debris which usually had the high content of bark.

  • This study examined the combustion characteristics and emissions, fuel economy, acceleration by selecting the two fuel with octane number difference to investigate the effect on the combustion characteristics and performance of the vehicle according to the octane number. First, a single-cylinder engine was used for the combustion characteristic experiment, Of the fuel, which is distributed on the market by the selection of two different octane fuel it is performed experiments. Single cylinder experiment examined the combustion characteristics that appear when you gradually advancing the ignition timing by the ignition timing and air-fuel ratio control for each fuel and through an output, emissions, pressure, hence examined the correlation between by octane number. In addition through the actual vehicle compared the changes in the fuel octane number difference, through acceleration tests examined the impact of the octane number requirements for high-performance segment. As a result, fuel of high octane number in accordance with the ignition timing the advancing showed a slightly stable combustion characteristics, a slight increase occurred in the acceleration test and power. However, both fuel does not significantly differ from the current mode, simulating the urban and highway fuel efficiency. Therefore, the operating conditions of the vehicle currently being sold on the Effects of high-octane fuel. fuel efficiency was found insufficient.

  • The propellant tile and crack which account for the greatest proportion of solid rockets are profoundly affected by viscosity and mechanical properties of solid propellant. In this paper HTPB/AP/Al system propellant has been researched for the viscosity, mechanical properties and burning properties with type and contents of bonding agents. The viscosity of propellant was changed significantly depending on the type and contents of bonding agents, and mechanical properties of HTPB/AP/Al system propellant were also varied. Considering both lower viscosity and stable mechanical properties, the optimum type and contents of bonding agents can be identified as the main factors to the HTPB/AP/Al system propellant.

  • This article describes the basic engineering concepts to be considered in the application of an induction heating furnace in the hot-dip galvanizing line. Experience in the Dongkuk project in Pohang, has shown that this arrangement has many advantages over the conventional method of using a combustion-gas heated furnace. Investment and operating costs are lower, the line length is much shorter, line operation is more convenient, air pollution is reduced, and the coated strip at of top-quality. As these benefits become well known, it is anticipated that the concept of induction heating will be more widely used in both new and revamped process lines. Induction heating is suitable for the production of Commercial Quality hot galvanized coils. More research is required to extend the present concept to the production of higher forming grades such as Drawing, Deep Drawing and Extra Deep Drawing Quality steels. A combination of induction heating and combustion-gas heating may lead to the way to the processing of these qualities of strip.

Soil Organic Carbon Determination for Calcareous Soils (석회암 유래 토양의 토양유기탄소 분석법 연구)

  • Soil organic carbon has long been considered as the most critical factor to evaluate the soil quality, fertility, and fertilizer prescription. In addition, soil organic carbon may impact on greenhouse gas effects and global warming. Because of that, the management of soil organic carbon is increasingly important not only for improving soil quality but also for managing soil as a greenhouse gas source. Both wet and dry combustion have been used to determine soil organic carbon. Many benefits, such as automation and less labor, could the dry combustion method become more popular. Inorganic form of carbon could overestimate soil organic carbon when the dry combustion method was applied. Determination of soil inorganic carbon may contribute to the improved accuracy of soil organic carbon analysis using dry combustion method. Objectives of this research were 1) to develop soil inorganic carbon determination method using modified digital pressure calcimeter and 2) to evaluate soil organic carbon from calcareous soils using the dry and wet combustion method. Results showed that the significant linear relationship was found between soil inorganic carbon content and pressure calcimeter output. Inorganic carbon ranged from 22% to 28% of total carbon in the calcareous soil samples. Soil organic carbon content by dry combustion for calcareous soil was determined by subtracting inorganic carbon measured by the digital pressure calcimeter from total carbon. Soil organic carbon determined by dry combustion method was significantly correlated with that by wet combustion method. In conclusion, the digital pressure calcimeter may use to improve soil organic carbon determination for the calcareous soils by subtracting of soil inorganic carbon from total carbon determined by dry combustion method.

Fuel Qualities and Combustion Characteristics of Animal-Fats Biodiesel for Agricultural Hot Air Heaters

  • Purpose: Combustion and fuel qualities of the animal-fats biodiesel as a heating fuel for agricultural hot air heater were studied. Methods: Biodiesel (BD) was made from animal-fats by reacting with methanol and potassium hydroxide in the laboratory. The biodiesel made in the laboratory was tested for fuel and combustion qualities. Results: The kinematic viscosity and the calorific values of the biodiesels were measured. Kerosene based biodiesel, BD20 (K) showed 18 cSt at $-20^{\circ}C$. It seemed that BD100 was not suitable for a heating fuel under some temperature. As BD content increased, the calorific value decreased up to 40,000 J/g for BD100, while the calorific value of light oil was 45,567 J/g showing difference of 5,567 J/g, about 12% difference. Several different fuels including BD20 (biodiesel 20% + light oil 80%), BD50 (biodiesel 50% + light oil 50%), BD100 (biodiesel 100%), and light oil were tested for fuel combustion qualities for agricultural hot air heater, and their combustion performances were compared and analyzed. Flame dimensions of biodiesels and light oils were almost the same shape at the same combustion condition. Generally, the $CO_2$ amounts of BDs were greater than light oil. However, in this study the differences were minor, so there was no significant difference existed between the BDs combustion and light oil. Conclusions: It seemed that quality was good for heating oil for agricultural hot air heater because of showing no barriers for continuous combustion and proper exhaust gas temperature and $CO_2$ amount discharged. But, for fuel fluidity for higher BD content fuel could be a detrimental problem in situations where the outdoor temperature is lowered. As BD content increased, calorific value decreased up to 40,000 J/g for BD100. Calorific value difference between BD20 and light oil was about 1,360 J/g.

  • In order to understand the stimulation quality of Artemisine Vulgaris Folium(Bong), Mori Ramulus(Sangi) and Persicae Ramulus(Dogi) combustion, and get the basic data for the development of electric moxibustion apparatus, the average temperature, peak temperature, average gradient temperature, maximum gradient temperature and combustion time of heating period on the three moxa materials were measured. 1. The average combustion temperature was high in order of Dogi, Sangi and Bong, and these were acknowledged to have a significant difference each other in the average temperature. 2. The peak combustion temperature among those was high in order of Dogi, Sangi and Bong, and Bong was acknowledged to have significant differences with Dogi and Sangi. Sangi and Dogi however were not acknowledged to have difference each other. 3. The average gradient temperature among those was high in order of Dogi, Sangi and Bong, and Bong was proved to have significant differences with Dogi and Sangi. Sangi and Dogi however were not proved to have difference each other. 4. The maximum temperature among those was high in order of Dogi, Sangi and Bong, bong was acknowledged to have signigicant differences with Dogi and Sangi, but Sangi and Dogi were not proved to have difference each other. 5. The combustion time was short in order of Dogi, Sangi and Bong. Bong was acknowledged to have significant differences with Dogi and Sangi, but Sangi and Dogi were not. In order to understand well the characteristics of combustion, it is required to have a quantitative interpretation of combustion calory, and, in the future, we expect it is required to have a consistent study for the clinical effectiveness and the mutual relationship according to the combustion characteristics.
