  • We simulate the particle bed motions with combustion and reduction in steel making rotary kilns. The particle bed motions are simulated by a Lagrangian approach called Discrete Phase Model (DPM). To reduce the number of tracking particles, the Coarse Grain Model (CGM) was applied. The model for particle motions showed good agreements with experimental results. In addition to the particle motion, the combustion and reduction simulation was performed. The combustion and reduction simulation can consider heat, mass and momentum transfer between the gas phase and particle beds.

  • Hydrogen-dimethy ether (DME) and hydrogen-diesel compression ignition engine combustion were investigated and compared each other in a single cylinder compression ignition engine. Hydrogen and DME were used as low carbon alternative fuels to reduce green house gases and pollutant. Hydrogen was injected at the intake manifold with an injection pressure of 0.5 MPa at fixed injection timing, $-210^{\circ}CA$ aTDC. DME and diesel were injected directly into the cylinder through the common-rail injection system at injection pressure of 30 MPa. DME and diesel inejction timing was varied to find the optimum CI combustion to reduce CO, HC and NOx emissions. When DME was injected early, CO and HC emissions were high while NOx emission was low. Fuel consumption, heat release rate, and exhaust emissions were measured to analyze each combustion characteristics of each ignition promoter. Fuel consumption was decreased when diesel was used as an ignition promoter. This is due to the lower volatility of diesel which created more stratified charge than DME.

  • Combustion and performance of a spark-ignition engine fueled with propane and butane were analyzed under different compression ratio. The electricity efficiencies of propane and butane increased with increasing the electricity production. The heat release rates of propane and butane were similar at a compression ratio of 9:1 because both fuels had similar optimal ignition timings without knocking combustion. Therefore, the difference in electricity efficiencies of engine generators was insignificant. However, at a higher compression ratio of 11:1, the butane engine generator had a lower electricity efficiency than the propane engine generator because its ignition timing retarded to suppress the knocking combustion.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate, using a numerical method, the fuel injection targeting for improving the combustion performance in a HSDI diesel engine. In this work, the ECFM-3Z model was applied as the combustion model, and the injection mass, inclined spray angle, and injection timing were varied for the study on the targeting of fuel spray. The results of this work were compared in terms of cylinder pressure, rate of heat release, and exhaust emissions characteristics. It was found that the cylinder pressure increased when the injection timing was advanced, and the rate of heat release increased when more fuel was injected into the piston bowl. In addition, $NO_x$ emission increased owing to the increase in the rate of heat release. On the other hand, CO and soot emissions decreased because of the improvement in combustion performance.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a method for protecting injector face for prolonged combustion time and heat flux measurement technique at the injector face. To obtain basic design data and verify the performance of the proposed method, a regenerative cooling injector face was designed and manufactured for the hot firing test. Due to the safety reason, hot fire test were performed 3, 10, 30, 60 and 120 seconds time step. The discrepancy between analytical results adapting to combustion and nozzle and experimental results is believed due to the over estimation of the convection heat transfer calculation. for the injector face, flow velocity is almost negligible, therefore radiation is more important than convection. Consecutive hot firing test during 10, 30, 60 and 120 seconds combustion time shows good repeatability.

  • This study aims to examine how the amount of sample and changes in combustible temperature of living branches and leaves treated with high temperature are associated with combustible time of two coniferous trees, Pinus rigida (R) and Larix leptolepis (L), which are the main victims of forest fire. During the first thirty minutes at $80^{\circ}C$, moisture content of R was higher than that of L by 12%, but after four hours, the moisture content was both lowered by 4~5% and turned to highly combustible leaves. With living leaves, the maximal combustible temperature, regardless of heating temperature, turned out to be higher than normal temperature by $67~140^{\circ}C$, and that with living branches, it was higher by $113~207^{\circ}C$. Also, with living leaves (R, L), the duration time of combustion was as follows: 605, 906 seconds at $400^{\circ}C$ and 76, 227 seconds at $600^{\circ}C$, respectively. Concerning the relation between the amount of burnt fuel and maximal temperature, the more the former was, the higher the latter. The total amounts of combustion heat of living branches and living leaves were 1, 121 Cal (20.8%) and 1, 137 Cal (21.4%), respectively. The total amount of combustion heat increased in proportion to the amount of consumed fuel: 100 g of living leaves and branches gave rise to 128 Cal, whereas 300 g did 556 Cal, that was more than three times.

  • The premixed burner is a very strong candidate for using household boiler burner system because it has high efficiency, low emission and can be used in compact boiler system. Usually, household boiler burner systems use a Bunsen burner, which consists of an inner rich premixed flame and fuel burned completely by a secondary air supply. It has a relatively long flame length and operates in a high excess of air, so it is difficult to fit such a burner into a high efficiency compact boiler. In this paper, the characteristics of a premixed combustion burner for surface media such as metal fiber, ceramic, and SUS fin were evaluated. In particular, the flow velocity over the burner surface for the cold flow characteristics of the surface material were measured and adjusted. The combustion tests were carried out by taking pictures of the flame and measuring the flame temperature. The amounts of CO and NO were measured and the characteristics of the surface burner materials, combustion chamber, and heat exchangers were evaluated for various excess air ratios and heating values.

  • This study investigates the combustion characteristics of methane-hydrogen-air premixture in a constant volume combustion chamber. Primary factors of the combustion characteristics of methane- hydrogen-air premixture are the equivalence ratio and hydrogen supplement rate. In the case of $\phi$= 1.1, maximum combustion pressure and heat release rate have peaks, and they increase as the initial pressure and hydrogen supplement rate increase. The total burning time is also the shortest at the $\phi$= 1.1, it shorten by lowering the initial pressure and by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate. The maximum flame temperature is shown at the $\phi$= 1.0, and increasing the initial pressure and hydrogen supplement rate, it increases. The concentration of NO reveals the highest value at the $\phi$= 0.9, and it increases by increasing the initial pressure and hydrogen supplement rate. It is also found that the limit of lean inflammability of methane-hydrogen-air premixture is greatly widened by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate.

  • Swirl injection induces not only the increase in fuel regression rate but also the reduction of combustion pressure oscillation. This acts, in turn, to stabilize combustion process. Thus, this study primarily focuses on the change in flow structure in the main chamber by swirl injection. Then examining the change in flow structure was done to understand the physical process for stabilizing combustion. In the results, the application of swirl injection could suppress the generation of p' and q' in 500Hz band and could shift the phase difference and cross correlation. Further investigations with combustion visualization also show that the development of helical motion near surface region affects the small-sized vortex generation and shedding yielding combustion stabilization eventually.
