The operating range of HCCI engine is narrow due to excessive rate of pressure rise on high load. The fuel stratification is proposed to solve the problem. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the effects of fuel stratification on reducing the pressure-rise rate at high load in HCCI combustion and to investigate that the operating range is expanded for fuel stratification in the preceding condition of initial temperature and equivalence ratios. The engine is fueled with Di-Methyl Ether (DME) which has unique 2-stage heat release. The computations were conducted using SENKIN application of the CHEMKINll kinetics rate code. Calculation result shows that proper fuel stratification prolongs combustion duration and reduce pressure rise rate.
an isolated droplet combustion exposed to pressure perturbations in stagnant gaseous environment is numerically conducted. Governing equations are solved for flow parameters at gas and liquid phases separately and thermodynamic parameters at the interfacial boundary are matched for problem closure. For high-pressure effects, vapor-liquid interfacial thermodynamics is rigorously treated. A series of parametric calculations in terms of mean pressure level and wave frequencies are carried out employing a n-pentane droplet in stagnant gaseous air. Results show that the operating pressure and driving frequency have an important role in determining the amplitude and phase lag of a combustion response. Mass evaporation rate responding to pressure waves is amplified with increase in pressure due to substantial reduction in latent heat of vaporization. Phase difference between pressure and evaporation rate decreases due to the reduced thermal inertia at high pressure. In addition to this, augmentation of perturbation frequency also enhances amplification of vaporization rate because the time period for the pressure oscillation is much smaller than the liquid thermal inertia time. The phase of evaporation rate shifts backward due to the elevated thermal inertia at high acoustic frequency.

The main mode of heat transfer of combustion gases at high temperature is thermal radiation of nonluminous gases, CO$_{2}$ and H$_{2}$O. Therefore the information of the emissivities of CO$_{2}$ and H$_{2}$O would be very important in the thermal performance analysis of furnace. In this study, an exponential model for the emissivities of CO$_{2}$ and H$_{2}$O was derived as function of P$_{g}$L and polynomial of reciprocal of temperature. Error analysis between the calculated values from present model and the valued of Hottel Chart was performed over temperature range of 1000-5000 R and a partial-pressure-length product range of 0.003 to 20 ft-atm. For CO$_{2}$ gray gas, the error percent between the calculated values and the values from Hottel Chart was distributed within 2.5% in case of using a polynomial in 1/T of degree 4. For H$_{2}$O gray gas, the model has an error range of 0 to 2.5% in case of using a polynomial in 1/T of degree 3.

Metal surface temperatures around the combustion chamber in a gasoline engine directly affect thermal durability and performance of the engine. Metal surface temperatures are influenced by many cooling factors such as drilled water passage, deflector, combustion chamber wall thickness, pillar, and coolant flow pattern. The object of this study is to learn how the coolant passages and coolant flow pattern in an engine influence to the engine metal surface temperature at engine full load and speed. From the test result, it is suggested a plan to reinforce the engine stiffness and to reduce the thermal stress simultaneously. Also, approaches are introduced to reduce the thermal load on the engine by adjusting the discharging direction from the water pump and by optimizing the water transfer holes in the cylinder head gasket. These methods and the optimized engine cooling system, which were suggested in this paper, were adapted for an engine in progress to eliminate the exhaust valve seat wear.

The purpose of this study is to search the temperature-rise time conditions for adequate reforming temperature region of hydrogen generation system. And we measured theexhaust gas at the exit of that system in order to know the combustion state of hydrogen generation system's combustor. We found the optimum condition of heat supply and temperature-rise time at well burned state. And the results were nearly same when the reactants were entered to each reactors. We will further consider the effects of temperature change near the exothermic reactors and find out hydrogen yield through reforming experiment.

Combustion and flame propagation characteristics of the liquid phase LPG injection (LPLI) engine were investigated in a single cylinder optical engine. Lean bum operation is needed to reduce thermal stress of exhaust manifold and engine knock in a heavy duty LPG engine. An LPLI system has advantages on lean operation. Optimized engine design parameters such as swirl, injection timing and piston geometry can improve lean bum performance with LPLI system. In this study, the effects of piston geometry along with injection timing and swirl ratio on flame propagation characteristics were investigated. A series of bottom-view flame images were taken from direct visualization using an W intensified high-speed CCD camera. Concepts of flame area speed, In addition to flame propagation patterns and thermodynamic heat release analysis, was introduced to analyze the flame propagation characteristics. The results show the correlation between the flame propagation characteristics, which is related to engine performance of lean region, and engine design parameters such as swirl ratio, piston geometry and injection timing. Stronger swirl resulted in foster flame propagation under open valve injection. The flame speed was significantly affected by injection timing under open valve injection conditions; supposedly due to the charge stratification. Piston geometry affected flame propagation through squish effects.
Propagation rates ($U_{edge}$) of various premixed, twin edge-flames were measured as a function of global strain rate ($\sigma$), mixture strength, and Lewis number (Le). Using a counterflow slot-jet burner with electrical heaters at each end, both advancing (positive $U_{edge}$) and retreating (negative $U_{edge}$) edge-flames can be studied as they propagate along the long dimension of the burner. Experimental results are presented for premixed methane/air twin flames in terms of the effects of $\sigma$ on $U_{edge}$. Both low-$\sigma$ and high-$\sigma$ extinction limits were discovered for all mixtures tested. As a result, the domain of edge-flame stability was obtained in terms of heat loss factor and normalized flame thickness, and comparison with the numerical result of other researchers was also made. For low ($CH_4/O_2/CO_2$) and high ($C_{3}H_{8}$/air) Lewis number cases, propagation rates clearly show a strong dependence on Le.

An experimental research program is being undertaken to develop a regeneratively-cooled experimental thrust chamber of liquid rocket engine using liquefied natural gas and liquid oxygen as propellants. Prior to firing test using a regenerative cooling with liquefied natural gas in this program, several firing tests were conducted with water as a coolant. Experimental thrust chambers with a thrust of about 10tf were developed and their firing test facility was built up. Injector used in the thrust chamber was of shear-coaxial type appropriate for propellants of gas and liquid phase and cooling channels are of milled rectangular configuration. Periodical variation of the soot deposition and discoloration was observed through an eyes' inspection on the inner wall of a combustion chamber and a nozzle after each firing test, and an intuitive concept of the periodical variation of mixture ratio near the inner wall of a combustion chamber and a nozzle at once was brought about and analyzed quantitatively. Thermal heat flux to the coolant was calculated and modified with the periodical variation model of mixture ratio, and the increment of coolant temperature at cooling channels was compared with measured one.

Film cooling technique has been applied to effectively reduce thermal load on liquid rocket combustion chambers by direct injection of a portion of propellant, which flows through the regeneratively cooling channels, into the chamber wall. This study developed a comprehensive model to quantitatively predict the effects of kerosene film cooling on propulsive performance and wall cooling at supercritical pressure conditions, and assessed the predictive capability against hot-firing tests of an actual combustor. The present model is expected to be utilized as a design and analysis tool to meet the conflicting requirements in terms of performance, cooling, pressure loss and weight.
