The combustion characteristics of binary component single droplets hanging at the tip of a quartz fiber are studied experimentally at different environmental pressures and temperatures under normal gravity. Normal Heptane and Normal Hexadecane are selected as two fuels with high difference in boiling temperatures. A falling electrical furnace in a high pressure vessel has provided high temperature environment. Nitrogen and air have formed the environment to study evaporation and combustion, respectively. The initial diameter of droplet was ranging from 1.1 to 1.3 mm. The evaporation and combustion processes were recorded by a high speed digital camera. Some characteristics of droplet burning under different environment conditions and different droplet composition have been investigated. Microexplosion of droplet take places under atmospheric pressure. Bubble formation and its consequent result, incomplete droplet disintegration which presents in all binary compositions, do not appear at high pressure. The initiation of combustion, always takes place in the bottom of droplet due to buoyancy effect of relatively cold fuel vapor. Also, the burning of binary droplet produces soot when the pressure is high.
Combustion phenomenon in scale-downed combustor is investigated. As the combustor scale decreases surface to volume ratio increases and chamber size approaches quenching distance. As the combustor scales down surface to volume ratio increases resulting increased heat loss. And this heat loss can affect quenching and instability of the flame. To investigate this effect plastic mini combustor is made. Stoichiometricaly premixed Hydrogen / air gas is used as fuel. Initial chamber pressure and chamber size are varied and the effects are evaluated. Peak pressure decreased with the decrease in chamber height. As initial chamber pressure decreases peak pressure decreases and this change is more important than scale down effect till the chamber height of 1mm. With this result and further information following the experiments design parameter for micro engine can be established.
Combustion instability is a serious obstacle for the lean premixed combustion of gas turbines, and can even cause fatal damage to the combustor and the entire system. Thus, improved understanding of the mechanisms of combustion instability is necessary for designing and operating gas turbine combustors. In this study, in order to understand the instability phenomena, an experimental study was conducted in a rearwardstep dump combustor with LPG and air. The fluctuations of pressure and heat release were measured by piezoelectric pressure sensor and High speed Intensified Charge Coupled Device (ICCD) camera respectively. Various types of combustion modes occurred in accordance with the equivalence ratio and the fuel supplying conditions. The unmixedness of the fuel and air can be controlled by changing the mixing distance ($L_{fuel}$). It is found that the unmixedness of the fuel and air affects the characteristics of flame behavior and pressure fluctuations in a lean premixed flame.
The present study is mainly motivated to investigate the vaporization, auto-ignition and combustion processes in high-pressure engine conditions. In order to realistically simulate the dimethyl ether (DME) spray dynamics and vaporization characteristics in high-pressure and high-temperature environment, the high-pressure vaporization model is utilized. The interaction between chemistry and turbulence is treated by employing the Representative Interaction Flamelet (RIF) model. The detailed chemistry of 336 elementary steps and 78 chemical species is used for the DME/air reaction. Numerical results indicate that the RIF approach, together with the high-pressure vaporization model, successfully predicts the essential feature of ignition and spray combustion processes.
The vaporization characteristics and spray combustion processes in the high-pressure environment are numerically investigated. This study employ the high-pressure vaporization model together with the state-of-art spray submodels. The present high-pressure vaporization model can account for transient liquid heating, circulation effect inside the droplet forced convection, Stefan flow effect, real gas effect and ambient gas solubility in the liquid droplets. Computations are carried out for the evaporating sprays, the evaporating and burning sprays, and the spray combustion processes of the turbocharged diesel engine. Numerical results indicate that the high-pressure effects are quite crucial for simulating the spray combustion processes including vaporization, spray dynamics, combustion, and pollutant formation.
Combustion analysis based on cylinder-pressure provides a mechanism through which a combustion researcher can understand the combustion process. The objective of this paper was to identify the most significant sources of cycle-to-cycle combustion variability in a spark ignition engine at idle. To analyse the cyclic variation in a test engine, the burn parameters are determined on a cycle-to-cycle basis through the analysis of the engine pressure data. The burn rate analysis program was used here and the burn parameters were used to determine the variations in the input parameter-i. e., fuel, air, and residual mass. In this study, we investigated the relationship of indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), coefficient of variation (COV) of IMEP, burn angles, and lowest normalized value (LNV) in a spark ignition engine in a view of cyclic variations.
In a diesel engine, air-fuel mixture formation and ignition delay period have great influence on the performance of engine. Their main factors are combustion chamber shape, fuel injection system. air volume, air flow and so on. So, the combustion process in the cylinder is complex because of many factors which have direct and indirect effects on it. In this study, we take into consideration of scavenging pressure and scavenging temperature that are hewn as the main factor to the combustion process of two-stroke D.1. diesel engine. It is taken a picture of the combustion flame process for combustion chamber of re-entrant type and cylindrical type. So, it is applied to the basis data of combustion chamber design from an image analysis.
The purpose of this study is to suggest a new method to determine a combustion phase (start of combustion and end of combustion) using a combustion pressure data. Unlike previous research method that used heat release amount, the difference between the combustion pressure measured in the combustion chamber and the motoring pressure was used to determine the combustion phase. This research was conducted using a single-cylinder diesel engine with a compression ratio of 17.7. The test was conducted under various injection timing. The newly proposed method showed high accuracy in combustion mode with early injection, as well as the conventional combustion mode. It is expected that this method will be used to study new combustion strategies such as HCCI (homogeneous charge compression ignition) and RCCI (reactivity controlled compression ignition) that are applying early injection strategies as well as existing combustion modes.

A constant-volume combustion chamber is developed to measure the burnt gas temperature over the wide ranges of equivalence ratio from 1.5 to 2.7 and pressure from 0.1 to 2.7 and pressure from 0.1 to 6 MPa by two-color method. The combustion temperature is also calculated by the conventional two-region model. The premixed fuel rich propane-oxygen-inert gas mixtures under high pressures are simultaneously ignited by eight spark plugs located on the circumference of combustion chamber with 45 degree intervals. The eight converging flames compress the end gases to high pressures. The transmissiv-ity in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the highest pressure is measured by in situ laser extinction method. Comparisons are made with the combustion temperatures between two-color method and two-region model. It is found that the burnt gas temperature mea-sured by two-color method is higher than that calculated by two-region model because of being the negative temperature gradient on the calculation and the temperature distribution of light path-length on the measurement and the burnt gas temperature for the turbulent combustion is higher than that of the laminar combustion under the same conditions because the heat loss for turbulent combustion is lower due to the shorter combustion period.
This study investigates the combustion characteristics of methane-hydrogen-air premixture in a constant volume combustion chamber. Primary factors of the combustion characteristics of methane- hydrogen-air premixture are the equivalence ratio and hydrogen supplement rate. In the case of $\phi$= 1.1, maximum combustion pressure and heat release rate have peaks, and they increase as the initial pressure and hydrogen supplement rate increase. The total burning time is also the shortest at the $\phi$= 1.1, it shorten by lowering the initial pressure and by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate. The maximum flame temperature is shown at the $\phi$= 1.0, and increasing the initial pressure and hydrogen supplement rate, it increases. The concentration of NO reveals the highest value at the $\phi$= 0.9, and it increases by increasing the initial pressure and hydrogen supplement rate. It is also found that the limit of lean inflammability of methane-hydrogen-air premixture is greatly widened by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate.
