The steel industry accounts for about 5% of the total annual global energy consumption and more than 6% of the total anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore, there is a need to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in these industries. The utilization of coke oven gas, a byproduct of the coke plant, is one of the main ways to achieve this goal. Coke oven gas used as a fuel in many steelmaking process is a hydrogen-rich gas with high energy potential, but it is commonly used as a heat source and is even released directly into the air after combustion reactions. In order to solve such resource waste and energy inefficiency, several alternatives have recently been proposed, such as separating and refining hydrogen directly from coke oven gas or converting it to syngas. Therefore, in this study, recent research trends on the separation and purification of hydrogen from coke oven gas and the production of syngas were introduced.
Many countries are striving to reduce carbon emissions with the goal of net zero by 2050. Accordingly, vehicles are rapidly being electrified to reduce greenhouse gases in the transportation sector. However, many organizations predict that internal combustion engines of LDV (light-duty vehicle) will exist even in 2050, and it is difficult to electrify aircraft and large ships in a short time. Therefore, synthetic fuel (i.e., e-Fuel) that can reduce carbon emissions and replace existing fossil fuels is in the spotlight. The e-Fuel refers to a fuel synthesized by using carbon obtained through various carbon capture technologies and green hydrogen produced by eco-friendly renewable energy. The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the injection and spray characteristics of the simulated e-Gasoline. We mixed the hydrocarbon fuel components according to the composition ratio of the synthetic fuel produced based on the FT(Fischer-Tropsch) process. As a result of injection rate measurement, simulated e-Gasoline showed no significant difference in injection delay and injection period compared to standard gasoline. However, due to the low vapor pressure of the simulated e-Gasoline, the spray tip penetration (STP) was lower, and the size of spray droplets was larger than that of traditional gasoline.
Pressurized oxy-fuel combustion is a promising technology for $CO_2$ capture with a benefit of improving power plant efficiency compared with atmospheric oxy-fuel combustion. Prior to $CO_2$ compression in this process, a flue gas condenser (FGC) is used to remove $H_2O$ while recovering the latent heat. At the same time, the FGC has a potential for high-efficiency removal of $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ by exploiting their good solubility in water. In this study, experiments were carried out in a lab-scale, direct contact FGC under different pressures varying between 1 and 20 bar to evaluate the removal efficiency of $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ for individual gases and their mixture. In the tests for individual gases, 20% and 76% of $NO_x$ was removed at 1 bar and 10 bar, respectively. Even higher removal efficiencies were achieved for $SO_2$, and also these were maintained for longer as the pressure increased. In the tests for $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ mixture, the removal efficiency of $NO_x$ increased from 13% at 1 bar to 56% at 20 bar because of higher solubility at elevated pressures. $SO_2$ in the mixture was initially dissolved almost completely and then increased by 1,219 ppm at 1 bar and by 165 ppm at 20 bar. Overall, the removal efficiency of $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ was increased at elevated pressures, but it was lower in the mixture compared with individual gases at identical conditions because of a lower pH and associated chemical reactions in water.
Thermal properties of PP and LLDPE dusts from chemical plant and their risks of coexisting with oxidizer were investigated by a pressure vessel. The thermal decomposition of PP and LLDPE dusts with temperature using DSC and the weight loss with temperature using TGA were also investigated to find the thermal hazard of PP and LLDPE dusts. Using the pressure vessel which can estimate ignition and explosion of PP and LLDPE dusts coexisting with oxidizer, a series of bursting of a rupture disc, experiments has been conducted by varying the orifice diameters the weight ratio of the sample coexisting with oxidizers and the species of oxidizer. And fire gases was measured by gas analyser ($ECOM-A^+$). According to the results of the thermal analysis of PP and LLDPE dusts, the decomposition temperature range of PP and LLDPE dusts was 200 to 350 and 300 to $500^{\circ}c$, respectively. The risk of PP and LLDPE dusts coexisting with oxidizer was increased as the orifice diameter was decreased. On the other hand, it was increased as the weight ratio of the sample to the oxidizer were increased. In addition, the risk of PP and LLDPE dusts coexisting with oxidizer was affected by the decomposition temperature of the sample and oxidizer. It is found that the risk of fire becomes high when the decomposition temperature of the sample is about same as that of oxidizer. Also, the fire gases was occurred carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The amount of carbon monoxide generated was found to be much higher in PP decomposition than in LLDPE due to incomplete combustion of PP which has high content of carbon in chemical compound.
Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) exists not only as a component of natural gas, biogas, and landfill gas, but also as a major combustion product of fossil fuels which leads to a major contributor to greenhouse gases. Hence it is essential to reduce or eliminate carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in order to obtain high fuel efficiency of internal combustion engine, to prevent corrosion of gas transportation system, and to cope with climate change preemptively. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in not only conventional membrane-based separation but also new adsorbent-based separation technology. Particularly, in the case of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), it has been received tremendous attentions due to its unique properties (eg : flexibility, gate effect or strong binding site such as open metal sites) which are different from those of typical porous adsorbents. Therefore, in this study, stereotype of two MOFs have been selected as its flexible MOFs (MIL-53) representative and numerous open metal sites MOFs (MOF-74) representative, and compared each other for $CO_2/CH_4$ separation performance. Furthermore, varying and changeable separation performance conditions depending on the temperature, pressure or samples' unique properties are discussed.
To investigate the morphological effect on synthesis of aluminum nitride by SHS Process, two type of Al Powder (granular and flacky shape) with the mean size of 34 $\mu$m and the diluent AIN powders of four different mean sizes.0.12, 9.7, 39.3, 50.5 $\mu$m, were used to prepare green compact. The packing density was fixed to $35 TD\%. The initial pressure of $N_{2}$ and diluent fraction was varied in the range of $1\~10 MPa,\;0.4\~0.7$, respectively. AlN with high purity of $98\% or over and large particle size of about several tens fm can be synthesized by SHS reaction as a consequence of adjusting particle size of AlN dilutent similarly to that of Al reactant. This may be caused by improvement of $N_{2}$ gas permeation to compact after passing the propagation wave. In the case of flaky-shape aluminum used as reactant, instead of granular Al-powder, unstable combustion would be occurred. As the result, irregular propagation of combustion wave and falling-off of maximum temperature would be observed during the reaction.

Experiments were conducted in a constant-pressure combustion chamber to investigate the effects of hydrocarbon addition on cellular instabilities of syngas-air flames. The measured laminar burning velocities were compared with the predicted results computed using reliable kinetic mechanisms with detailed transport and chemistry. The cellular instabilities that included hydrodynamic and diffusional-thermal instabilities of the hydrocarbon-added syngas-air flames were identified and evaluated. Further, experimentally measured critical Peclet numbers for fuel-lean flames were compared with the predicted results. Experimental results showed that the laminar burning velocities decreased significantly with an increase in the amount of hydrocarbon added in the reactant mixtures. With addition of propane and butane, the propensity for cell formation was significantly diminished whereas the cellular instabilities for methane-added syngas-air flames were not suppressed.

The flow field, fuel-air mixing, and behaviors of turbulent flames have been investigated using the large eddy simulation (LES) numerical technique in a premixed swirl combustor equipped with EV double cone burners. Recirculation zones are generated by the swirl burner, and lean premixed flames are formed within a distance of 0.2 m from the tip of the burner. NOx emission of 0.46 ppm is predicted at 1 atm and an air/fuel ratio of 38.7. However, most of the CO generated in a flame front continues to be oxidized as it moves toward the exit, and CO emission of 5.45 ppm is predicted at the exit. The NOx emission can be reduced by decreasing the pressure and air/fuel ratio. The characteristics of NOx emission have been investigated through RANS simulations for various fuel injection types, and it is found thereby that five-lance-hole injection produces the lowest NOx emission rate.

We investigated the combustion rate and kinetic rate of char when burning in oxygen-enriched atmospheres with either an $N_2$ or $CO_2$ bath gas in a drop tube furnace. The experiments were performed with sub-bituminous coal (Adaro) and bituminous coal (Coal valley) under atmospheric pressure conditions. Two different coals were investigated over 12 to 30 vol% oxygen and furnace temperatures of 900, 1100, and $1300^{\circ}C$. For both coals, the particle temperature and overall reaction rate are lower in the $CO_2$ bath gas. However, analysis of single-particle data shows that the surface-specific burning rate of char oxidation is similar in both gases. In addition, the kinetic rate and activation energy for each coal were similar for both gases. Generally, the particle temperature and overall reaction rate of sub-bituminous coal are higher than those of bituminous coal.

The fine dust generated in the home and restaurant business occupies a low ratio of about 4% of the total fine dust emissions. However, at the foodservice business, the rate of change of the pollutant concentration is very high, so that the temporary fine dust concentration can be measured up to 60 times. The pollutants generated from non-industrial combustion plants consist of particulate fine dust and gaseous organic compounds. To remove these pollutants, cleaning dust collection system, which is an effective system for simultaneous removal of gaseous and particulate matter, is applied. This is a method of increasing the probability of diffusion capture of the Brownian motion by pressurized liquid injection method using the atomizing nozzle. The dust removal efficiency of the fine dust collecting system was analyzed by nozzle spraying air pressure condition and angle using the manufactured fine dust removing system. As a result, it was confirmed that the efficiency of removal of fine dust and gaseous organic compounds was more than 90%. The developed system is expected to be highly usable in the future because it can remove particulate dust from the existing plant hood system without any installation cost.
