The purpose of this study is to develop a gait-event detection system, which is necessary for the cycle-to-cycle FES control of locomotion. Proposed gait event detection system consists of a signal measurement part and gait event detection part. The signal measurement was composed of the sensors and the LabVIEW program for the data acquisition and synchronization of the sensor signals. We also used a video camera and a motion capture system to get the reference gait events. Machine learning technique with ANN (artificial neural network) was adopted for automatic detection of gait events. 2 cycles of reference gait events were used as the teacher signals for ANN training and the remnants ($2\sim5$ cycles) were used fur the evaluation of the performance in gait-event detection. 14 combinations of sensor signals were used in the training and evaluation of ANN to examine the relationship between the number of sensors and the gait-event detection performance. The best combinations with minimum errors of event-detection time were 1) goniometer, foot-switch and 2) goniometer, foot-switch, accelerometer x(anterior-posterior) component. It is expected that the result of this study will be useful in the design of cycle-to-cycle FES controller.
Disease discrimination using an electronic nose is achieved by measuring the presence of a specific gas contained in the exhaled breath of patients. Many studies have reported the presence of acetone in the breath of diabetic patients. These studies suggest that acetone can be used as a biomarker of diabetes, enabling diagnoses to be made by measuring acetone levels in exhaled breath. In this study, we perform a chemical sensor array optimization to improve the performance of an electronic nose system using Wilks' lambda, sensor selection based on a principal component (B4), and a stepwise elimination (SE) technique to detect the presence of acetone gas in human breath. By applying five different temperatures to four sensors fabricated from different synthetic materials, a total of 20 sensing combinations are created, and three sensing combinations are selected for the sensor array using optimization techniques. The measurements and analyses of the exhaled breath using the electronic nose system together with the optimized sensor array show that diabetic patients and control groups can be easily differentiated. The results are confirmed using principal component analysis (PCA).
In this paper, we designed and implemented bio-signals transmission and storage system using wireless sensor network based on ZigBee. Wireless sensor network is organized with routing protocol based on tree structure. The data is transmitted to monitoring system based on SIP. ZigBee will be used as various combinations with other wireless network technologies for application purposes.
In oriental medicine, it is possible to classify each person into eight kinds of constitutions based on the eight constitutional medicine theory. We developed a piezoelectric 3-channel tactile sensor using PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) film for pulse detection of the radial artery. High frequency buffer (impulse buffer), amplifier, 60 Hz noise notch filter and low pass filter were integrated on three sheets of PCB board. The pulses of the radial artery at three points were checked using our system. Each constitution of the eight ones has different combinations of pulses.
In this paper, we describe the thermal characteristics of the output voltages of ethanol gas sensor according to the amount of radiation incident on the infrared sensors located at each focal point of two elliptical waveguides. In order to verify the output characteristics of the gas sensor according to the amount of incident light on the infrared sensor, two combinations of sensor modules were fabricated. Hydrophobic thin film is deposited on one of the reflectors of sensor modules and one of the two infrared sensors was equipped with a hollow disk (10 Ø), and the temperature characteristics of the infrared sensor equipped with the hollow disk (10 Ø) and the infrared sensor without the disk were tested. The temperature was varied from 253 K to 333 K at 10 K intervals based on 298 K. The properties of ethanol gas sensor have been identified with respect to varying temperature for a range of ethanol concentration from 0 ppm to 500 ppm. In the case of an infrared sensor equipped with a hollow disk (10 Ø), the output voltage of the sensor decreased by 0.8 mV and 1 mV, respectively, as the temperature increased. Conversely, the output voltage of the diskless infrared sensor showed an average increase of 67 mV and 57 mV as the temperature increased. The ethanol concentrations estimated on the basis of results show an error of more than 10 % for less than 100 ppm concentration. However, if the ethanol concentration exceeds 100 ppm, the gas concentration can be estimated within the range of ${\pm}10%$.
Modified atmosphere (MA) of reduced $O_2$ and elevated $CO_2$ concentrations has been used for keeping the quality of fresh produce and extending the shelf life. As a way to attain the beneficial MA package around the produce, a gas diffusion tube or perforation can be attached onto the container and controlled on real time in its opening/closing responding to $O_2$ and $CO_2$ concentrations measured by gas sensors. The timely-controlled opening of the gas diffusion tube can work in harmony with the produce respiration and help to create the desired MA. By use of the mathematical modeling, the effect of tube dimension on the controlled container atmosphere was figured out in this study. Spinach and king oyster mushroom were used as typical commodities for designing the model container system (0.35 and 0.9 kg in 13 L, respectively) because of their respiration characteristics and the optimal MA condition ($O_2$ 7~10%/$CO_2$ 5~10% for spinach; $O_2$ 2~5%/$CO_2$ 10~15% for mushroom). With a control logic for the gas composition to stay as close as possible to optimum MA window without invading injurious low $O_2$ and/or high $CO_2$ concentrations, the atmosphere of the sensor-controlled container could stay at its lower $O_2$ boundary or upper $CO_2$ limit under certain tube dimensional conditions. There were found to be the ranges of the tube diameter and length allowing the beneficial MA. The desired range of the tube dimension for spinach consisted of combinations of larger diameter and shorter length in the window of 0.3~2 cm diameter and 0.2~10 cm length. Similarly, that for king oyster mushroom was combinations of larger diameter and shorter length in the window of 0.9~2 cm diameter and 0.2~3 cm in length. Clear picture on generally affordable tube dimension range may be formulated by further study on a wide variety of commodity and pack conditions.
Recently, 3D printing technology has gained increased attention in the manufacturing industry because it allows the manufacturing of complex but sophisticated structures as well as moderate production speed. Owing to advantages of 3D printers, such as flexible design, customization, rapid prototyping, and ease of access, can also be advantageous to sensor developments, 3D printing demands have increased in various active device fields, including sensor manufacturing. In particular, 3D printing technology is of significant interest in tactile sensor development where piezoelectric materials are typically embedded to acquire voltage signals from external stimuli. In regard with piezoelectricity, researchers have worked with various piezoelectric materials to achieve high piezoelectric response, but the structural approach is limited because ceramics have been regarded as challenging materials for complex design owing to their limited manufacturing methods. If appropriate piezoelectric materials and approaches to design are used, sensors can be fabricated with the improved piezoelectric response and high sensitivity that cannot be found in common bulk materials. In this study, various 3D printing technologies, material combinations, and applications of various piezoelectric sensors using the 3D printing method are reviewed.

Flexible tactile sensors, which are primarily used as grippers in robots, are mainly used to handle highly elastic or highly flexible objects. That is, flexible grippers are used when an object cannot be sufficiently controlled by applying a specific output force or taking a specific grabbing action. This is because a flexible tactile sensor needs to measure the pressure applied directly to held objects while deforming according to the shape of the object to be handled. CNT-based sensors used to be made from a highly flexible polymer to give flexibility and it is known that the sensors are greatly affected by the contact resistance of the terminal that connects the sensor to an electrical circuit; therefore, this paper clarifies the contact resistance of MWCNTs-based flexible tactile sensors and terminals. The effects of main and plating materials for terminals are investigated and the combinations of main and plating materials that exhibit contact resistance are measured in a typical industrial environment.
Data aggregation is one of the well-known techniques to reduce the energy consumption for information transmission over wireless sensor networks (WSN). As the WSNs are deployed in untrusted or even hostile environments, the data aggregation becomes problematic when end-to-end data privacy including data confidentiality and integrity between sensor nodes and base station, is required. Meanwhile, data homomorphic cryptoschemes have been investigated recently and recommended to provide the end-to-end privacy in the hostile environments. In order to assure both data confidentiality and integrity for data aggregation, this paper analyzes the existing homomorphic cryptoschemes and digital signature schemes, proposes possible combinations, and evaluates their performance in terms of CPU overheads and communication costs.
In this study, biomarkers were analyzed and segmented using tunable infrared gas sensors after performing the principal component analysis. The free spectral range of the device under test (DUT) was around 30 nm and DUT-5580 yielded the highest output voltage property among the others. The biomarkers (isoprophyl alcohol, ethanol, methanol, and acetone solutions) were sequentially mixed with deionized water and their mists were carried into the gas chamber using high-purity nitrogen gas. A total of 17 different mixed gases were tested with three tunable infrared gas sensors, namely DUT-3144, DUT-5580, and DUT-8010. DUT-8010 resolved the infrared absorption spectra of whole mixed gases. Based on the principal component analysis with each DUT and their combinations, each mixed gas and the trends in increasing gas concentration could be well analyzed when the contributions of the eigenvalues of the first and second were higher than 70% and 10%, respectively, and their sum was greater than 90%.
